Your Morning Dump… Where RJ Hunter is making James Young expendable?

071015-NBA-Boston-Celtics-RJ-Hunter-summer-league-MM-PI.vresize.1200.675.high.74

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big story line. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.

James Young is supposed to be the veteran and RJ is supposed to be the guy trying to figure things out. But if you look at the first few games of summer league, you’d think that RJ was the guy in his second year and James Young was the rookie based on the way they’ve played.

Young has plenty of time to get back into the good graces of the Celtics and prove his worth but right now RJ Hunter is coming and he’s coming quick.

CSNNE – Sherrod Blakely

The James Young hype train came to a screeching halt, huh? All the talk about a renewed work ethic and 15 pounds of muscle are a distant memory after a few poor shooting nights and a hip injury in Summer League.

After a pair of goose eggs in his first 2 games, RJ Hunter dropped 18, 13 and 21 points in the next 3. He even saw a standing ovation.

We all can admit that talent assessments made in July are worthless. Sure, you’d want all of your Summer League players to get rave reviews but that isn’t realistic.

Young and Hunter will continue to battle for a roster spot right through training camp. Maybe Hunter’s emergence will light a fire under Young.

Who knows, maybe one or both will be dealt for a more seasoned shooter, like say Danilo Gallinari.

There isn’t much new to add to the Gallinari trade report that surfaced yesterday. Bleacher Report’s Brian Robb laid out 5 possible trade scenarios, a few of which are intriguing.

On Page 2, DeMarcus Cousins and George Karl kiss and make-up. Kinda.

DeMarcus Cousins and George Karl finally shook hands during the Sacramento Kings‘ summer league game on Monday night. It was a start, but there is a lot more work to be done to repair the relationship between the Kings’ All-Star center and their coach before next season.

“I just said hello to him this afternoon,” Karl told Yahoo Sports. “I don’t think it’s something we have to rush through. You got two guys that are very frustrated with losing, two guys that are somewhat stubborn and two guys that love to compete.

“Sometimes, that doesn’t work the first time you hang around. But you have to take your time to make it work. I’m very confident to make it work.”

The rift between Cousins and Karl grew after Yahoo Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski reported before the NBA draft that Karl wanted Cousins traded. Cousins responded by tweeting out an emoji of a snake in the grass. A day later, Karl said Cousins was the Kings’ best player but the franchise needed him to be “committed and dedicated to being in Sacramento.”

Kings owner Vivek Ranadive was so upset with Karl that he seriously considering firing him, a league source said. Cousins wanted to be traded before the draft, a source told Yahoo Sports, but no deal was consummated.

“Cousins felt like if Karl wanted [him] to be traded then he wanted to be traded, too,” a source close to the situation said.

Yahoo Sports

Watch the video of Boogie and George shaking hands and you’ll see one lukewarm greeting.

The Kings are going to give it a go with this highly combustible roster. They’ve added Rajon Rondo, Willie Cauley-Stein and a couple of shooters, why not try to capture lightning in a bottle?

Gotta love Rajon’s sense of humor.

Worst case (or best case for Celtics fans) scenario is that this team implodes by midseason and Cousins demands to be traded.

    Bad

  • Fitzy

    Those trade proposals are EW

    • stevemb34

EW = reasonable and something another team would actually agree to instead of “a 2 and some trash for your best player” like the proposals most people float out?

      • Curt Hays

What if we trade Chris Babb and Phil Pressey to Cleveland for LeBron James and Walt Frazier? Wouldn’t that work?

        • KGino

No way dude, Cleveland is getting two likable players, and we get the basketball devil and a retired Knicks player? Talk about EW.

      • Fitzy

yeah cause they were all 2 and some trash. Reality is that Danillo is a UFA at the end of the year who has literally never played 82 games in his 7 YEAR career. He’s only played more than 70 games twice. Next highest total is 62 games. The only plausible deal is the first one with Avery Bradley, I’d add some to that, but that is the only one that has an acceptable basic framework.

        • stevemb34

          Celtics Get: Danilo Gallinari
Nuggets Get: Kelly Olynyk, Evan Turner, Chris Babb, Phil Pressey and a 2016 first-round pick

You have a problem with that (assuming there are lottery protections)? Seriously? I’d ask for like a 2 back or ensure it’s Minnesota’s pick but that’s more than reasonable assuming that 1 isn’t Brooklyn’s and has some protections on it.

          • Fitzy

Not sending Kelly olynyk locked in on his rookie contract for 2 more years for a UFA who averaged 12 PPG last year. Sure talent level is more than suitable but Gallo can walk end of year. and Olynyk is our best young big. Let him grow & develop. Also Denver has Faried & Hickson on their depth chart, what do they need another PF who can’t play defence for?

          • stevemb34

“Olynyk is our best young big” is the most depressing sentence I’ve heard in a long, long time

          • Fitzy

it is what it is. Dwell on it and be pessimistic seems to be everyone’s attitude regarding the celtics. Just keep trucking along and let them grow up. Brad’s a teacher; we’ll see progress.

          • stevemb34

Eh, I don’t dislike him but you need bigs to win and Kelly will top out as Canadian Ryan Anderson which isn’t bad by any means – it’s actually a really valuable skill set – but it’s not franchise changing either.

BTW – Perry Jones! I’ll take it even if, after 2 years, he basically is what he is, which is average at best.

          • Fitzy

haha, Perry Jones!!! I also wanted him over Fab, I can’t help but feel he went to a poor situation for himself in OKC which affected his career trajectory. I think he would have been better off in Boston off the hop. And you’re right nothing special but certainly a serviceable skill set. You Canadian, noticed the “Eh.”

          • stevemb34

I actually wanted either Sully or Perry and Fab so I was happy with the picks even if Fab was one of those long term projects that’s more often Saer Sene than Serge Ibaka but at 21, finding a 7 footer with that kind of skills to potentially fill a need that we still have 3 years later was worth a shot. The whole it’s better to strike out trying to hit a homer than always be shooting for singles kinda mindset. With 2 picks I liked the idea of swinging for the fences with Fab even if it didn’t work out. Looking at who went after him (http://www.nbadraft.net/nba_final_draft/2012), there are only a few guys that were worth a crap that went after him and most were in the 2nd round, later enough that they weren’t really in play at 21 even if a few of them (Draymond Green – OOPS!) should have been.

and no, not Canadian, just like “Eh” to mean “meh” or “whatever,” as in, “Kelly is eh” aka average aka expendable IF we find something worth trading him for.

  • adam

Young has a lot to live up too, Everyone has hyped him since he came here. The same can’t be said for RJ. Maybe its because we all want to see Young succeed. He might, but maybe not here.

  • SNG

Young’s trade value couldn’t be lower, give him another chance

  • BamaCeltic

Id give up Bradley for Gallo straight up in a heartbeat….do it Danny

  • Astarot

None of those trades scenarios is acceptable.

    • stevemb34

You’re joking, right? Avery for Gallo straight up is a perfect trade. Just about all of them are acceptable though I’d really prefer not to add any picks into the mix unless we’re getting more than just Gallo back.

      • stephen

hopefully swap avery, sully for faried and gallo….there would be more to it than that but i’d be happy for now 🙂

        • stevemb34

I want no parts of Faried. Dude can ball but he’s a hustle guy that’s about to get paid like a real player. I don’t want to be the team that pays him.

          • stephen

like it or not thats the norm now, and do you really wanna be the team that gives sully 13-15 mil a year?

          • stevemb34

Woah woah woah, who said that? He’s just further away and, because of his fatness and general average-ish production, he’ll get Crowder money at best assuming he doesn’t blow up next year.

You can’t give him $15M; he’ll just eat it.

          • stephen

right now i would give faried 15m before i would sully but hopefully skinny sully makes me eat my words. i seriously hope ainge does try to make some moves this year tho…we got a lot of talent that contenders could use and some really good trade chips

          • stephen

oh and did you not see the FA signings? the cap is going up and even average players are getting paid

  • forever_green

Hunter reminds me of Mike Miller

    • Curt Hays

No way! He looks like Prince!

      • forever_green

His name isn’t Prince it’s…! @#$/^&*()-‘”:;,? or something like that.

        • adam

No once he got free of his record contract he changed it back to Prince so he could own all his music again.

  • Curt Hays

Every time I see RJ Hunter, I think of The Artist Formerly Known as Prince.

    • KGino

If Kris Humphries and Prince had a child…

      • Curt Hays

I totally see it. They are from the same town…

    • BamaCeltic

As rookie hazing …has to perform Purple Rain or When doves cry ..before a preseason game ..I’d pay to see that …lol

    • BamaCeltic

Also a small sound clip from the song Purple Rain should be played everytime he sinks a 3 ….how cool would that be ..haha

      • Curt Hays

Except that the Lakers are purple…ugh.

The Kings and Pelicans just announced a preseason game in Lexington! The Rondo, Boogie, WCS trio will either be glorious or horrendous. Either way, I get a chance to see it up close.

  • Rjd12345

James Young is 19 and showed potential in his limited minutes last year. Cut the kid some slack. He’s the youngest player on the team.

    • Jerry Heasley

      James will always be Young.

    • Jerry Heasley

I think some players should wait to be drafted to show their true potential.

  • Greg Murdock

At this time next year people will be talking about the next draft pick the Celtics bring in and saying they could make Hunter expendable. Slow down on the hype for Hunter. Didn’t we go through this last year with Young?
