Report: Celtics talked Gallinari trade with Denver

Celts/Denver discussed Gallinari deal, but nothing doing as of now. Some conflicting talk from sources, but may want to keep an eye on this.

While this is the first time I’m hearing Danilo Gallinari’s name linked to Boston, we can’t be too surprised considering Denver is blowing up its roster.

Is the 26-year old Gallinari damaged goods?. He missed 18 months (2013-14) with a torn ACL that required three surgeries. He also missed about three weeks last season with a torn meniscus.

On the flip side, he averaged 18.7 ppg after the All-Star break last season, including a 47 point outburst against the Mavericks in April.

On the other hand, Gallo recovered fully from his injury, finally, and showed what a very good all-around player he can be. His shooting is not as accurate as it needs to be, but he played good defense and filled up the stat sheet on a nightly basis. He also had a 47-point game. He’s a key piece to the future, if we can resign him.

Gallinari is due to make $11 million in the final year of his contract.

A little off topic, but remember that short-lived Knicks team a few years back that sported Stoudemire, Felton, Gallinari, Mozgov, and Wilson Chandler (and also included a memorable loss to the Celtics from a PP dagger and the ensuing celebration where Nate Robinson nearly broke his neck)? They seemed to have so much potential and momentum. Carmelo will do that to a team I guess.

  Not to be a Carmelo apologist but you look at that list and it’s Melo who’s the problem?!? Not the embryonic Mozgov and gallo, the fact that was the last time Amare’s knee still worked, ray Felton right in, “OF COURSE ID LIKE FRIES WITH THAT!” mode, and a was never that great anyway Wilson chandler. Nope, not them. Melo was the problem… I mean screw Melo but let’s be reasonable.
  
  Also, at least 2 of those guys (Gallo and Mozgov but I think chandler too) were traded FOR Melo.

    Yeah, sorry, that wasn’t supposed to be an attack on Carmelo. The last sentence was an attempt at a joke to reflect on how quickly the Knicks dive bombed after getting some positive publicity. Everyone except for Stoudemire out of those five was actually traded for Carmelo, and that shows how the trade really gutted that team. Sure Stoudemire’s knees would have given out regardless, but he was an MVP candidate at the time, Felton was playing the best basketball of his career in that half season with the Knicks, Gallinari looked like a rising star, Mozgov was a young 7 footer, and Wilson Chandler is still a solid wing player. Hindsight’s 20/20, and it looks both the teams and players involved in the trade would have gone up in flames regardless of a deal, but Carmelo just makes himself too easy of a target…

Depends on what they want for him. Expiring contract is always interesting tough. I’d rather take a shot on Ty Lawson (real PG not like Smart he’s an SG) but now with Rozier on the team.

I know people would disagree but I’d give up Bradley (very good point guard defender, but injury prone and limited on offence and undersized) Olynyk (bad defender, can’t rebound and never will be aggressive enough) and James Young (yes he is young and has potential but we haven’t seen it yet, injury prone and we have Hunter) I know Gallo is injury prone but this he’s only 26, another expiring contract and will balance the team more. So in short, Bradley, Olynyk and Young for Gallo. Start Rozier, Smart, Gallo, Lee and Johnson. Still a great bench of Thomas, Hunter, Turner, Crowder, Jarebko, Sully, Mickey and Zeller.

  I would feel comfortable with giving up those 3 too. And it clears out some roster space that the Celtics need.

I love this guys game when he is healthy, but with that being said, i have ZERO faith he can put together a full season. I wouldn’t give up much for a guy who likely won’t be on the floor by the end of the season. There’s a reason the nuggets are bailing on him even at 26 y/o.

Denver wants more than what Ainge is willing to give.

Denver almost certainly wants a first round pick. I would not trade a first round pick for an expiring contract on an injury-prone guy when my team is not a contender. Gallo is not ‘the missing piece’.

The question is: Will some other team outbid Danny? Flip got Cleveland to overpay for Love (gave up Wiggins, picked up >$30M in salary & tax obligations for a player that, long term, is not a good fit for the Cavs, but hey, LeBron thinks he’s a GM……)

  My problem is that I watch Gallo play, and I think he could be our most valuable player since Pierce. 2015 was a healthy year for him, and I’d absolutely love to have him on this team. However, you’re right that overpaying for him could hurt pretty badly in the future.
  
  My thought is whether or not he’d be someone who would help draw the actual “missing piece”. Besides that, I’d love to see him playing for Boston.

    If things break the right way, I could see the Celtics winning 50 games this season–without Gallo.
    
    Brad’s getting incredible ‘buy-in’ from these guys, and the people that the C’s added (Lee, Amir) look like more ‘buy-in’ guys.
    
    A 50 win team w/$30M in cap space is going to be poised to make a major upgrade next year.
    
    That’s Ainge’s luxury. He’s made enough minor improvements that he doesn’t need to make a big move in order to have a better team in 2015/16.

      Your conclusion is logical, but I don’t see 50 wins as feasible.
      
      Consider the 16 division games:
      
      Toronto will hurt us, Philly may suck, but I be they take a couple, the Nets will be matchup trouble, and the Knicks will be better than expected. I predict we get 7 wins there.
      
      Every team in Central will be as good or better than we are, so maybe we get 7 wins there.
      
      Southeast will also be pretty good, but I think we might get 9 wins there.
      
      Eastern Conference wins prediction for Boston: 23
      
      Western Conference wins will not be greater than Eastern, so that maxes us out at 46 wins, per my “logic”.
      
      So, I suppose with the right breaks, here and there, 50 is reasonable but unlikely without some more moves.

        C’s aren’t going to finish under .500 vs. division opponents. I don’t think Toronto is going to be as tough a matchup now that the C’s have Amir. I don’t see the Sixers, Knicks or Nets presenting any challenges whatsoever. The Sixers are still actively trying to lose, the Knicks have not solved the biggest problem they have (a coach and GM who think the Triangle won 11 championships, not Shaq, Kobe & MJ), and the Nets are all a year older–and for them, that’s not an improvement.
        
        Frankly, I’d give the C’s strong odds of winning the division, as I think they’re easily the most improved team in it.
        
        I’m a bit skeptical of the long-term prognosis for the Bucks–I don’t think they’ll be significantly better than the C’s this year. I don’t think the Pistons will be as good as the C’s, and I have some doubts about Indiana.
        
        But, more to the point, I think we’re at the point with this young team where they will legitimately expect to win any game they play. I mean, everyone can talk about expecting to win games, but I think starting this year, especially w/guys like Amir & Lee, they’ll start to walk the walk. There are a lot of ~40 win teams that are not there, and I think that attitude is what will help separate this team from the pack–a little bit, at least.
        
        (usual caveats apply about health, crazy trades, etc.)

This is hardly related to anything here, however, if AB comes out this season as weak as he did last he needs to go. If he can’t shoot better than 34%~ from 3 then why do we need him…

I think you’re all underestimating Gallinari. I wouldn’t give up any first round pick for him, but in order to make this move, to me anybody except for Smart is expendable. If he reinjures again, we’ll just keep his expiring contract, but if he stays healthy we’ll have a versatile scorer that we can either dump at the end of the season or resign if we can’t find a top notch SF that can replace him.

Gallo is great when healty , 6’10 guys who can shoot and put the ball the floor like him are rare. Bradley is expendable at this point , he has hit his ceiling , role player that plays good D and hits a shot sometimes …Gallo would help us , if he stayed healthy, and he is also a good expiring contract.
