Your Morning Dump… Where weird stuff happened last night.

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big story line. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.

Of course, I’m talking about Amir Johnson’s 4-4 three point shooting outburst.

Yes. Amir may have been literally unconscious last night.

But seriously, it was one step up, two steps back for the Celtics on the injury front. Marcus Smart is back.

But…

Page 2: Jae Crowder sprained his ankle

“Jae sprained his ankle,” Stevens said after Boston topped the Chicago Bulls, 107-100 . “That’s all I know. I was told that it would be at least a week and then we’ll see after, but I don’t think we’re into it enough to make an assessment on that timeline. It doesn’t sound like he’ll be back any time soon.”

Happened when Crowder made a jump pass over Rajon Rondo. I guess this is the downside to playing–and practicing–at 11/10ths…

Page 3: Al Horford took a shot to the face during practice

“So, on Monday, one of our players swiped for the ball and got him across the face,” Stevens said. “And he felt good Monday and he felt good Monday night. He actually slept good Monday night, no symptoms that were reported. He came to practice, when he was lifting and shooting, he felt good there. He was cleared to practice and then, when he got into a few drills, then he started feeling some nausea. And so that’s why he ultimately was stopped and removed (from practice) and went home. Then, later on in the afternoon (Tuesday), he saw Dr. Nap — Dr. Napolitana — and was diagnosed with a concussion.

“Now he’s in the protocol. He felt better today but still had some symptoms. And he said you have to be 24-hour symptom free before resuming activity and, if that restarts it, if any symptoms come up after that 24 hours, once you resume activity, it restarts itself. So we’ll see how he feels (Thursday), but he will not be on the trip (to Cleveland), he will not play in the game.”

Okay, so I’m guessing whoever that was feels terrible about this. But also, holy crap. When was the last time you saw a guy get hit hard enough to get a concussion in a game? It’s happened what? Once this year in the whole NBA?

Tough to walk that line between keeping the intensity dialed up so that you’re ready to go when your number’s called during the game and remembering that, hey, you just served up a hard foul on a guy who plays on your team when the scores count.

Also, the Celtics will have to be at positively scrap-tacular to keep Cleveland close tonight, being that neither Crowder nor Horford will be available. Those wishing to see Jaylen Brown look especially like a rookie will want to tune in any time he’s defending LeBron “Cleveland or Nothing” James.

Finally:

I submit that Halloween decoration is now truly legendary.

I doubt he got a concussion because the are practicing too hard or a teammate decided to give him a hard foul. Sometimes there is inadvertent contact in basketball.

    • Sean McLaughlin

I heard Horf owes Isaiah $20 and tried to duck out on it…

      • jrleftfoot

        That explains it then

    • Richard Jensen

Stevens said that he got hit in the face. Hitting someone in the face is going to get you called for a foul most of the time even when it’s not intentional.

And I *think* that so far this season only Doug McDermott has gone on the concussion protocol from game contact, and I can’t find any instance from this season of a player going on the protocol from practice contact (although a Cleveland player did get dinged in Sept. in practice). AFAIK, about 100+ team-games have been played across all 30 teams (counting a single game as two team-game equivalents), so that’s the equivalent of a full season + playoffs for any one team.

Also, I would hope the contact that gave Horf the concussion was inadvertent! You wouldn’t want him to get hit that hard on purpose!!

My point was that the article`s implication that Horford got hurt because the Celtics were practicing too hard or somebody was overzealous is silly. I`m sure there is some point to your lengthy diatribe , but neither I nor the 1001 logicians I consulted could figure it out. By the way, I never said it wouldn`t have a foul . I`m sure it would have. Sooo?

        • Richard Jensen

I’m pretty sure you didn’t actually consult 1001 logicians. 🙂

And all I said was that it’s possible that the guys need to dial it back in practice.

You got me on the magicians. point for your side

I am looking forward to finally seeing Horford team up with Crowder, Bradley and Smart. That will be some serious defense. Hopefully Crowder recovers quickly and entirely first and foremost. His sprained foot last season was bad.

Man, Cleveland and 3-1 series leads swing both ways this year.

  • Curt Hays

Rich, scrap-tacular is great. Coin that ish.

Someone needs to remind this team how great they were last year on the second night of a back-to-back…I kinda wanted CLE to win the WS so that LeBron would stay up all night partying.

  • Tim Kozicki
  • swissflix

Any specific reasons for benching Gibson and Lopez for most of the second half other than extremely bad coaching?

    • Curt Hays

Probably to try to avoid getting destroyed on the fast break.

    • Curt Hays

And it seems like it worked. Coaching-wise, I thought Brad lost the game. Just like JVG said during the broadcast, if Chicago continues their consistent style, they’ll catch up towards the end.

I’m getting sick of the deep twos and tons of threes. We need more paint scoring. I’m okay with Zeller’s KG jumper from time to time if only to spread things out, but I can’t handle these jump shots.

      • swissflix

Hey, Smart shot 1-6 from deep! That is not THAT much!!

        • Curt Hays

Ha! It’s about 3 more than I wish he’d taken. Those shots are lazy excuses for not driving. He should be penetrating and lining up the shooters.

          • swissflix

I was thinking the same. The first 2 or 3 threes were actually ok shots and then he had a couple good drives but afterwards he went back to bad habits…5 threes is definitely too much for me

          • jrleftfoot

or making the shots—lol— the 3rd option sucks

  • TruthHurts

As much as it stinks to loose players to injury no team is better equipped to handle the loss. If Jae is down for 2-3 weeks (standard for most ankle sprains) i think we can fill around him. Give Jaylen more minutes same with Jonas and G Green. Al being down will give more minutes to Mickey and Zeller.
Im not sure about the rest of the people here but there is nothing that can happen during the season (aside from injuries) that will make me view this team any different. For me its all about the playoffs (and winning at least one round) so if we have injuries and play the young guys but as a result win less games than we would have it is still worth it. Il sacrifice wins (and possible seed position) for the sake of our young guys growing and getting better.
