Despite nearly collapsing in the second half, the Boston Celtics notched a win in their Vegas Summer League opener tonight. Behind another good night from Marcus Smart, who had 19 points, 3 assists & 3 steals, the Celts beat the Blazers 85-76. The green teamers were up by twenty, 53-33 at the start of the 2nd half. But sloppy play and a scrappy Portland squad had the Celts clinging to a six point lead (68-62) with just over six minutes left in the game. But thanks to some good free-throw shooting and defense, as the Celts held Portland to just one field goal over the last 5:14, Boston held on for the W. Not an ideal shooting night for Smart at 5 of 17, but his intensity and aggressive attitude on both sides of the ball were contagious.
Smart came out guns blazing once again, as 12 of his 19 came in the first quarter. Boston also got solid performances from RJ Hunter (13 points, most of which came at the FT line) and Jordan Mickey. Mickey really impressed me tonight. It’s clear now why Danny Ainge likes him, and he’s quick, athletic and has definite defensive potential. Mickey had 15 points, 10 boards & 3 blocked shots. What he lacks in size, he more than makes up for in sheer athleticism/length. I’m excited to see just how much better he can get with some NBA minutes under his belt.
The Celtics are back in action tomorrow night, as they face the Sixers at 10:30pm EST. Also of note tonight, Amir Johnson spoke to the media for the first time since signing with the Celts. Here’s a little bit of what he had to say via Twitter:
