Your Morning Dump… Where the safe bet is for Danny Ainge to wait until the offseason

Reggie

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big story line. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.

But contrary to reports, the Celtics were not actively involved in the pursuit of players to whom they were linked for two days.

Ty Lawson, Enes Kanter and DeMarcus Cousins were replaced by Goran Dragic and Isaiah Thomas of the Phoenix Suns and Oklahoma City’s Reggie Jackson in the Celtics rumor mill, but sources on different sides of the issue confirmed there was nothing of substance to any of it.

Leaving aside the question of fit, it’s apparent the C’s are not enamored of the uncertainty that would come with acquiring Dragic or Jackson. The former plans to be an unrestricted free agent this summer, and the latter will be restricted.

There is no guarantee the Celts could keep either player, and while Ainge certainly isn’t above taking a chance, it’s hard to picture him doing so with Dragic, who didn’t have Boston on his list of desired destinations and could command more on the open market than the C’s would be willing to pay.

It’s true that by getting a free agent-to-be now, a team will be able to give him more money and a longer deal than other suitors in the offseason, but the Celtics don’t necessarily have to get creative in that way. They will have cap space to spend on free agents.

The belief among opponents is that Ainge is in a good position regarding today’s deadline, the draft and the period beyond.

“Pretty much anything that’s there for him now will be there again when the season is over,” one general manager said. “The difference is there’ll be a lot more clarity at that point. Whether it’s a sign-and-trade or some other kind of deal, you’re going to know what you’re getting.

Boston Herald

Unless Goran Dragic has a change of heart, you stay the hell away from him.

Reggie Jackson’s situation is a bit different. I’d approve of the Celtics moving some assets for Jackson provided they have some idea of what it will take to sign him to a long-term deal. There are reports Jackson turned down 4 years, $48 million from OKC. I don’t blame him for thinking he can get Gordon Hayward or Chandler Parsons money ($60 million) on the open market.

There’s really no rush for Danny Ainge to take any risks, unless a rim protecting center hits the market:

Hibbert’s game hit a plateau in 2012, but I believe, at 28, he can still impact games defensively. The question is… at what price?

On Page 2, Brandon Bass doesn’t know what a buyout is.

“I don’t know anything about that, man,” Bass told MassLive.com. “I don’t even know what a buyout is. What is that?”

The power forward might have been joking. He probably knows what a buyout is. Anyway, the reporter informed him of the concept.

“Why would I want to take a contract hit to become a free agent?” Bass replied. “Man, listen, I would never want to take a contract hit to become a free agent.”

Fair enough.

Mass Live

Gotta love Brandon Bass’ honesty. FWIW, I never figured him to be a buyout candidate.

He doesn’t seem like the type of guy to bitch and moan, and the Celtics see value in his veteran leadership and work ethic.

And finally, the Wolves want to bring KG back for a curtain call?

The Minnesota Timberwolves ‎are making an 11th-hour push before Thursday’s trade deadline to try to reacquire Wolves legend Kevin Garnett in a swap that would send Thaddeus Young to Brooklyn, ESPN.com has learned.

Sources told ESPN.com the sides have engaged in serious discussions on the deal, which would ultimately require Garnett’s approval even if the teams agree before Thursday’s 3 p.m. deadline, since Garnett possesses one of the NBA’s six full no-trade clauses.

Garnett has insisted in recent weeks that he is not in the market for an in-season exit from Brooklyn, largely because he does not wish to displace his family ‎in the middle of the season.

ESPN

Don’t do it, Kev. If you are going to leave Brooklyn (and you should), latch on to a contending team out west.

The playoffs are a lot more fun with KG in the mix.

Can the Celtics go after Larry Sanders? Or does anyone think he is a locker room cancer. Rumors re he doesn’t know if he will play again.

    • CFH

I bet he’d play if the country legalized pot and the NBA stopped screening for it in drug tests, but I don’t see that happening any time soon.

      • Curt Hays

        It’s a performance enhancing drug.

Edit: Well, I’m sure Bill Walton thought it enhanced the Grateful Dead shows…

        • Sean McLaughlin

The Kroll Show did a parody of cheers the other week. Bill (Seth Rogen) was munching the entire sketch… too funny

    • RedwasKing

I mean Robert Parish was stoned his entire career and we love him.

      • KGino

        Legalize it!

      • eddysamson

Yeah its not the weed that is the problem with Sanders. Its the will to play the game, he has none left. You could say its because of the weed, but no one can prove that. Plenty of people are still motivated to pursue their passions while being stoners (like me for instance), so basketball must not be one of his passions, just something he was good at.

        • CFH

Regardless of whether professional basketball is a passion of his, he CAN’T pursue it while being a stoner because he’ll keep getting suspended. The NBA and weed are an either/or for him under current rules.

          • Sean McLaughlin

Yeah, I didn’t mean it was the weed that made him not want to play, it’s more the repercussions from the league for smoking that make him not wanna play… There’s been plenty of awesome, stoner players… They either didn’t have to test back then, or clean up long enough to pass.

        • bill_nair

I’m all for someone doing what makes them happy. If not being in the NBA makes Sanders happy then more power to him. But if hes choosing weed over the NBA it seems kind of pathetic. Clean up when you know the tests are coming and buy a ton of the stuff with your paychecks. Maybe he teams up in China with Beasely. Sounds like the making of a great comedy.

    • Sean McLaughlin

Yeah, Larry’s said himself he’s kinda over basketball (obviously because he can’t partake of his drug of choice). For that reason only, it would be a big gamble. Excellent player, but if his heart’s not in it he should just ride out his current contract and quit.

      • adam

if his heart isn’t in it, then whats the point.

    • Sean

I was wondering if he played for the Nuggets would he even be in trouble? lol

  • Jester00

KG can’t help anyone right now go home

    • bill_nair

Sad but true. I’d rather him mentor some young guys than burn out his knees anymore.

    • Sean McLaughlin

      he just went to Minn….

  • Sean McLaughlin

Here’s to a quiet trade deadline day! (Unless we can get Boogie or Hibbert, I’d be all over either of those guys! lol)

    • adam

      use trade exceptions?

      • Sean McLaughlin

        BOSTON CELTICS TRADE EXCEPTIONS
        HOW ACQUIRED AMOUNT EXPIRES
        Kris Humphries $1,334,092 7/19/2015
        Keith Bogans $285,816 9/25/2015
        Joel Anthony $152,757 10/19/2015
        Rajon Rondo $12,909,090 12/18/2015
        Brandan Wright $5,000,000 1/9/2016
        Austin Rivers $2,400,000 1/15/2016

none of them expire before free agency this summer. so while useful if the right person comes up, we don’t necessarily have to use them up today.

        • adam

$22,081,755 in Trade Exceptions. Not bad at all.

          • Sean McLaughlin

Yeah that’s why Forsberg said we could dump em to clear up cap space for free agents. They’re more valuable than MOST of the picks we’ve acquired, to be honest if we use em that way. I still contend we need a 25-30 yr old star, not more “developing talent”. This is how we could get that.

  • Curt Hays

Don’t we waste our trade exceptions if we primarily go after free agents?

    • Sean McLaughlin

“The Celtics have a bevy of trade exceptions from their recent dealings, but while many don’t expire until next December or January, Boston is likely to renounce those exceptions this summer if it desires to clear the space necessary to pursue top-tier free agents.”

      -Chris Forsberg

Garnett Reportedly Rules Out Buyout, Willing to Consider Trade
    Thursday, Feb. 19
Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports reported that Garnett has ruled out a contract buyout in Brooklyn. However, the forward would be willing to consider a trade, according to Wojnarowski.

  • RedsLoveChild

Larry Sanders issues the following statement :

“I was gonna deny DeAndre Jordan`s shot, then I got high
I was gonna posterize Pau Gasol, then I got high
Now I`m waiting on the Dominos delivery boy, and I know why
    `Cause I got high
    Because I got high
    Because I got high”

    • bill_nair

Sad part is the NBA lets the players know in advance when there gonna be tested. I smoke the stuff like its going out of style but come on, how cant you give it up for a couple months (or a week).

Damn IT for Marcus Thorton and a 2016 first-round pick via Cleveland.

Unless I’m not seeing something here I think this is a pretty good deal for us considering Isaiah’s contract.

I’m guessing this probably mean Phil Pressey’s minutes are gone right? Hopefully he can be a solid backup for another team someday.
