Thornton, Prince traded away as Ainge finally gets Isaiah Thomas

At this point, I feel like Danny Ainge was inside the maternity ward at Isaiah Thomas’ birth offering his mom Austin Ainge and a conditional future son in exchange for her newborn.  As soon as the Suns showed interest in trading Thomas, it was clear Boston would be involved. And today, finally, Ainge’s obsession has been realized… Isaiah Thomas is a member of the Boston Celtics.

This is all still very fresh, so the finer points of this deal are trickling out. There’s some talk that it’s actually part of a larger 4-team deal involving Philadelphia and Milwaukee, but at face value, this deal looks good. Thornton was not staying in Boston anyway, and that Cavs pick is basically meaningless because it will likely be a late-round pick and, if it’s not, it’s top-10 protected until 2019 anyway.  In the “what did you get” vs. “what are you giving up” game… the Celtics got the better of this deal. As for how he fits, this is something we’re going to have to watch closely. Thomas actually makes Boston’s already small backcourt gets smaller with the 5’9″ Thomas. But he might also do well in Brad Stevens’ wide open system that allows players to take 3’s at will. Thomas is shooting 39% from deep this year, so that’s nice. What does this mean for Marcus Smart? You ask… I don’t know. I will go back to the days of Rondo to suggest that there’s no reason you can’t have a 3-guard rotation. As for Prince…

I have no idea if these guys will stick around or not. Gigi Datome is a restricted free agent next year while Jonas Jerebko is expiring this year. I wouldn’t be shocked to see some kind of buyout involved here.

Great trade. Great value. Great compliment to Smart and Bradley. Also the ultimate NBA underdog… we are going to have so much fun rooting for this guy.

    • RedwasKing

Also- they traded Prince for who????

      • Rod Shaftwell

They traded Prince for…something, which is actually pretty good because we don’t have to buy him out and it keeps him away from the Clippers who were waiting for the buyout.

        • CallingBatman

Jerebko may actually turn out to be useful. Decent 3 pt shooter, can rebound. Datome, hasn’t shown much.

        • RedwasKing

Yeah I was pretty stoked that they didn’t have to buy him out. The 7+ million dollar TPE is the best part of that deal.

  • Brad P

Thomas will be making less than Bradley. That’s messed up.

If we don’t keep Thomas for the long haul, he’s a great trade chip at the very least. Way better than a late first rounder

    • bill_nair

Ya I prefer IT over the Cavs pick. We finally have a backup PG/bench scorer.

      • Curt Hays

        uuuh, starter?

        • bill_nair

Who do you start him over? Brad has set a precedent of earning minutes. Just because hes already our best player doesn’t man he should be handed the starting spot.

          • Curt Hays

Valid point. With a second string of IT, Young, ET, KO, and Brandon Bass, we might win some games.

          • bill_nair

Right now I don’t want to remove Smart as the starting PG. The more I watch him the less I think he can succeed at the 2. Let him grow into that PG position by letting him play it and get comfortable.

IT is the perfect 6th man. He’ll lead the team in scoring for the rest of the season as either a starter or bench player.

….But hes not a starting PG. Let him be a 6th man until Smart proves hes not a PG. IT will still get 30+ MPG.

          • Curt Hays

            Totally with you.

If I was being literal, then I’d disagree and say that Jamal Crawford is the perfect 6th man…:)

          • bill_nair

JCraw is the man! Always been a favorite of mine.

    • Jake Gruber

Excellent point. I think this also probably means that they might not think Smart is a point guard, which I fully agree with.

  • CFH

But I don’t want to root for someone named Isaiah Thomas!

This will take some getting used to.

  • bill_nair

    Eh.

Wish we could’ve got KJ from the Sixers. Hopefully Brad sticks with his earning minutes mantra and lets IT be the 6th man hes destined to be. I can get behind that.

  • Danny C

Why trade Prince for 2 players who probably won’t see the court? At least Prince was a valuable presence in the locker room for the younger guys, why trade that?

    • bill_nair

We likely end up with a TPE. I bet we took on 1 of the 2 new guys with our pre-existing TPE.

      • Sean McLaughlin

1.1 million difference between the salaries…

  • Sean McLaughlin

Well, eating my words. Good job today, Danny

  • Roy Sanchez

Can’t wait to see Thomas play tomorrow night in Sac. P&R between he and either Sully/KO should be fun to see

  • eddysamson

I like it. Only wish we kept Prince but at least he went home to Detroit.

  • KGino

BOOM danny. Got that pick for nothing and turned it into IT.

  • Andrew Vellucci

I’m disappointed we didn’t get a big man like Kanter especially for the fact he got traded for a bag of rocks but i can’t complain this team needs offense and trading thornton frees up minutes for James young which makes me happy

  • Sean

I think long term he’s just another trade chip. His contract will end up being pretty cheap and w/ 9 first rounders in the next two drafts they had to trade one or two. I still don’t want him on the team though. Rather see Smart and Young play it out then have to deal w/ a ball hog. If they wanted a short scorer they should have kept Nate.

  • KGino

tell me we got Pierce back! lol

    • Curt Hays

Don’t you want him to win another ring though??

      • KGino

Sure, but he ain’t doing that with the Wiz! This year at least

      • JBards

Paul Pierce is my favorite player ever and I do not want him to win another ring if it isn’t with the Celtics. It just wouldn’t feel right.

        • Curt Hays

          :)

  • Justin Quinn

    SO…

    emeka is a FA…

  • MadLad

I love IT. Dude is a spark plug and the celts definitely need him. Much like Thorton, IT will have a license to shoot the rock. His contract is friendly too. I was hoping Bradley would of been traded to make room for Young, but oh well.
And no one is mentioning Jerebko. This guy has played limited mins, but thats on a team that was swimming in big guys. I can see him being somewhat productive in green. Hes not a starter for us, but he will produce off the bench.
I cant wait for the first Pick n roll with Kelly O and IT.
F it. Lets go get that 8th seed and shock the world!!

  • Lee in Oregon

Danny gets his man. I loved IT in Sac-town, and he’s at a reasonable salary. Good move for the C’s going forward…..too bad we couldn’t get EK from Utah.

  • Fitzy

For people who don’t like it.

    • bill_nair

      lol

  • Luke Walton

i’ve always loved zeke, ever since he lobbed that pass to bird in game 5 of the 87 ECFs

  • Dirk Diggler

Attention fellow GREEN TEAMERS … the fun is just beginning for us Celtics fans…

Isaiah ’bout to ball the F out …

  • Dirk Diggler

This was a move the Celts had to jump all over. Not sure why anyone here believes Kanter is even close to being better than Olynyk if you want an offensive big. Olynyk is so under-appreciated by Celtics fans it’s ridiculous.

Wait until Isaiah and Kelly start gelling as a 1-2 punch…the fun is just beginning.
