We’re not the only ones thinking Kevin Durant is a possibility

Chuck - Red's Army March 31, 2016 Rumors 25 Comments

NBA: Oklahoma City Thunder at Philadelphia 76ers

A couple of weeks ago Kevin Durant said he likes Boston and more than a few of us started to wonder if the free-agent-to-be would entertain the idea of signing with the Celtics. We were quickly dismissed by the sports radio ilk. But SI’s Andrew Sharp includes the Cs in his purely-speculative list of KD options:

Working Theory: Take all the dysfunction from the Lakers section, and replace it with one of the three best coaches in basketball, one of the most stable organizations in sports, and a roster that is one piece away from scaring the crap out of the whole league. Boston makes a lot of sense. As a Wizards fan, this would be heartbreaking. As a fan of Kevin Durant, I’m pretty sure this is the option I want the most.

He’d be in the East, he would be going to team with as rich of a history as anywhere in the league, and he’d probably average 35-a-game playing in that offense. From a marketing standpoint, it would put him on an even bigger platform than he’s had in Oklahoma City. From a basketball standpoint, it would allow him the best chance (outside of OKC) to max out his ability.

The Celtics can clear enough space to sign Durant and another star—Al Horford?—and they’ll also have the Nets draft pick for the next three years, ensuring that they can stay flexible as he gets deeper into his prime. If Durant decides that it’s time to leave Oklahoma City and try something new, this is one of the only teams that actually has a credible a chance at building a team to beat the Warriors. It would be so much fun to watch them try together.

Sharp puts the Cs odds at 15%. On the low end for sure, but 15% higher than what anyone thought 3-4 months ago. If the national media is starting to come around on Boston as an option, then WHY NOT US?!?

In other dreamy news, the Bulls are allegedly open to trading Jimmy Butler:

The Vertical’s Chris Mannix reported that the Bulls could even move their franchise player.

“I’ve been hearing rumblings that there is legitimate interest in Chicago in potentially dealing Jimmy Butler this offseason,” Mannix said in a video (6:40 mark).

It has previously been reported that the Boston Celtics tried to acquire Butler at February’s trade deadline. The Vertical also reported that “several executives point to Orlando … as a team to watch closely in the pursuit of Butler.”

It’s easy to figure out why the Celtics and Magic would try to pry Butler away. He’s a legitimate two-way star who could bump Boston toward championship contention and Orlando toward respectability. Both teams want to take the next step as soon as possible.

Sign me up for both.

IT, AB, JAE, KD, AL = disgusting starting 5

    • Dave

      All good character guys too.

    • Adam Stark

Through in that nets pick and smart and Olynyk off the bench and that’s a 60-65 win team.

    • BamaCeltic

dude …that lineup would be SAVAGE!!

  • Paul

I’m all about signing free agents to play with this group. Would love Butler/Love/Boogie or any other rumored available player in a trade but would much prefer giving up only money to get better players. It’ll be difficult parting with what we’d have to part with to get Butler here.

  • Jack Howland

This made my day. KD, Al, and Butler? We’d just be one goofball shy of a great team, unless ET takes another huge leap forward as a quote machine. I’d love to hear his equivalent of (“Don’t let us win tonight!”).

  • RedsLoveChild

We could have had Jimmy Butler in the 2011 draft.
We could have had Chandler Parsons in the 2011 draft.

    Unfortunately, Ainge`s magic 8 ball said :

“JuJuan Johnson is the future! First draft Marshon Brooks, then slickly trade him to the Nets for Johnson. Championship parades will soon follow”.

    • Dave

I always dreamt of having the Marquette boys in Jimmy and Jae along with Draymond on the team, easily the best perimeter defense in the league.

    • KGino

Oh, Ainge passed on Butler and Parsons? Two guys picked 30th or later? Lots of teams passed on those guys. Jujuan was the Big10 player of the year and averaged 20+ and 8+ rebs in college, in hindsight he’s obviously a horrible pick… But thats the point. All you do is say what Ainge should have done in hindsight… Well thank you, Captain Obvious!

Let me know you’d pick these guys BEFORE THE DRAFT, then you can sit up there on your high chair and talk sh** about Ainge in every comment section.

      • MJ

I really wish fans were smart enough to realize that after the lottery, the draft is pretty much a crapshoot. If you’re fortunate enough to get a franchise level talent in the late 1st-round/2nd-round, that makes you lucky more than anything. It just means you guessed right on a guy that not many believed to be that good coming into the draft. The fact that Parsons and Butler exceeded expectations is everyone else’s fault outside of the teams that drafted them, not just Ainge’s.

      • RedsLoveChild

        Try to follow along.

Ainge`s job is to supply the team with talent, and getting it right on draft day is his single most important job function. Correctly identifying young talent is the life-blood of any organization.

Ownership pays him millions NOT to blow it on draft day. However, Ainge blows draft…after draft…after draft…after draft…

2011 just happened to be another draft he pissed away. It wasn`t even close to being his worst!

2016 draft….I`m already dreading what he`ll come up with.

        • KGino

Once again incapable of following my point. My point is not that Ainge is outstanding at drafting or picking up useful talent late in the draft, my point is that you could say the same thing about many teams and all you’re capable of is looking back in hindsight. Never have I once seen you say “the celts should draft this kid” and been right about it. I’m afraid it would do me no good to list ainges good picks as a.) you know who they are already and b.) I was never arguing he was great at drafting in the first place.

But what I WILL do, is list the San Antonio Spurs draft picks over the last so many years that have fallen in the 20-30 range. Again, the marquee franchise in the league right now (I think most people would agree). 2015: Nikola Milutinov (26), 2014 Kyle Anderson (30), 2013 Livio Jean Charles (28), 2011 Cory Joseph (29), 2010 James Anderson (20), I don’t think I really need to go on. You’ve barely heard of any single one of those 5 guys, and thats not even including some of their later round picks who were even more no name. So I guess you’d have to call POP/RC Buford pretty terrible GMs since they “aren’t good at the single most important aspect of being a GM” and drafted Cory Joseph over Butler.

In actuality, what Ainge has done in terms of setting us up for the future has been OUTSTANDING. He traded our most iconic players of the last 15 years and fleeced the nets, just like you wanted. He hired the best coach he could have possibly hired. He has room to sign two max level free agents and has a legitimate shot to snag Durant. And somehow you’re mad because he’s drafted about as well as the Spurs have in those slots. You are the biggest pessimist commenter I’ve ever seen on a website. Just constantly whining. Shut the hell up and enjoy the show

          • Dave

I agree that Danny has done an outstanding job to put us in the position that we are now. For me he is probably top 2 GM in the league in terms of trades, 9 times out of 10 he gets a good return.

However my biggest gripe on him is it seems like after we got KG and Ray he just stopped putting in more effort in evaluating draft talent. As stated before you’re not going to hit on all of your draft picks but to miss out on so many sleepers over those years and opting to overpay over the hill vets is a bit head scratching. Especially since he got guys like Big Al, TA, West, Powe and a few others being in the draft positions that they were.

His worst was probably the 08 draft was picking Giddens instead of looking to pickup a back up centre for Perk like DJ, Asik or Pekovic. Doc actually brought up last year how he was pretty high on Butler during that draft and he loves his Marquette guys but Danny opted for JJJ. It doesn’t help when Zaren’s draft board for 2012 came out recently and Draymond was on there but Fab was chosen instead.

I don’t bide that the young guys wouldn’t get playing time under Doc, he went through a rebuild here as well and helped develop guys like Big Al and others that I’ve mentioned as well as Sully who he almost instantly let him play once his rookie season began.

Danny’s biggest strength is in his trades, that’s also how he right his wrong in JJJ when he traded him along with Moore for Lee that one year. Maybe it’s because I have a lot of sentimental value for the Big 3 era that I wished it got extended by hitting on a few of those picks but he is drafting better again with the rebuild but yea that’s my rant for this discussion lol.

          • Eisenhorn1976

Good points — I just don’t much weight into anything Doc Rivers has to say about drafting anyone or talking about another GM’s decisions. He’s been atrocious as the Clippers’ GM. Anyone who signs Austin Rivers to a long-term deal is either delusional or his dad (haha).

I’m also not going to dock any GM for passing on Draymond. The Warriors themselves admit that they weren’t certain what they had and probably didn’t expect him to be the Draymond of the past 2 seasons, although he seemed quite good to me even back during the Mark Jackson era.

Heck, if Lee hadn’t gotten hurt, we may never have seen Draymond go super saiyan (this is only further proof that NOT playing David Lee, willingly or otherwise, is good for your team — even with his big numbers, the Mavs have had a losing record with David Lee).

          • Dave

He was better off sticking as a coach, he became exactly what you just stated once he was granted that kind of power by the Clippers. Although he does have his son on the cheap haha, even funnier how the past year or so he’s been getting players that he coached in Boston (PP, Green).

      • Eisenhorn1976

I don’t understand why our fellow C’s fans keep criticising Danny when even well regarded Coach/GM tandems like RC/Pop passed on those guys too.

        • RedsLoveChild

Getting it “right” on draft day is the single most important aspect of any GM`s job. It`s super important! It is not a casual GM get together or party or a hobby. It`s make or break!

Keep choking on draft day year after year, and you`ll see a team going nowhere forever.

          Want a “safe” prediction?

When Ainge is done doing whatever he will do with those Brooklyn picks, you`ll be bitterly disappointed. Granted, you and the other cool-aid drinkers on this blog will be singing his praises, but privately you`ll feel let down.

          • Eisenhorn1976

A GM’s job is to build a title contender. Mainly, that’s done through the draft, trades and attracting free agents — but it also involves hiring the right coach and even relatively mundane things like building a good front office team, hiring good trainers, shooting coaches, etc. It’s right to put a lot of weight into draft performance but you’re putting far too much weight into it.

There are 30 GMs in the league but only 6 have built title contenders in the last decade. We’re using the term ‘GM’ loosely here since Danny is actually the Celtics’ PoBO and so is Pat Riley with the Heat. It’s also arguable that only the Celtics (Danny), Heat (Riley) and Warriors (Myers) GMs have built their winners because, let’s face it, the Lakers (Dr. Buss), Mavs (Cuban) and Spurs (Pop) have other figures in the organization who probably have equal or greater say on basketball decisions than their respective GMs. That’s pretty obvious with the Lakers, who’ve been rudderless since Dr. Buss passed away.

Danny has had exactly 3 lottery picks in the last decade (2014 and 2007 and 2006). In 2006, his series of moves ultimately yielded Rondo, who was essential to the Celtics’ 2008 title and was an All-Star (and All-NBA defensive player — easy to forget these days) 4 times. He turned the 2007 pick (Jeff Green, whom he eventually got back — and who is still a useful NBA player, unlike Perk) into a cascade of deals that brought around title 17. With the 2014 pick, we have Smart. You may hate Marcus Smart’s shooting and flopping but his value over replacement (2.4) in his first two seasons is BETTER than Carmelo Anthony’s (2.2) or Jimmy Butler’s (2.2) during the same periods in their careers.

Every knowledgeable basketball fan is aware that after the lottery, it’s a crapshoot — Danny has been choosing outside the lottery for much of the past decade and while the C’s have had busts like Fab Melo and Jajuan, they’ve also had solid picks like Avery Bradley, Kelly Olynyk and Jared Sullinger. As for Rozier, Hunter and Mickey — the jury is still out, isn’t it? So far, all 3 have shown that they should become solid NBA rotation players, which is about right for the spots they were drafted at. Were there better talents? Sure — I would’ve like Booker over Rozier — but I’d prefer to wait at least 2 seasons before passing judgement.

Heck, even within the lottery, you can have huge busts. The Cavs still haven’t won a title despite getting 3 number 1’s and having Lebron back. Philly still looks like crap.

Besides, and like I said in my earlier post, Danny has done as well a job with rebuilding the C’s from the remnants of the KG-Pierce era about as well as anyone could have expected. The C’s have Stevens, a solid core and multiple (valuable) draft assets, possibly until 2021. The outlook is good enough that it’s not even patently ridiculous anymore to picture Durant coming here (though it is probably not happening).

Sure, Danny missed on guys like Draymond, Parsons and Jimmy Butler — but a lot of guys did and with Parsons, it looks like a brain fart occurred somewhere since Parsons himself has mentioned that the C’s had told him (or his agent, I can’t recall) that they were going to pick him.

Given all this, I’m willing to give Danny the benefit of the doubt. He has given Celtics fans a lot to look forward to. That you’re expecting him to ‘choke’ is your own personal bias. You’re certainly entitled to it. I just don’t think that we can judge Danny solely by his draft acumen.

First off, I do respect the fact that you put a lot of thought into your argument, and your defense of DA is about as good as one can probably make for him.

You mentioned 3 ways a team acquires talent. Lets break all 3 down.

Drafting : For a variety of reasons, this is the single most important way to get talent. DA`s draft day blunders are out there for all to see. I`ve highlighted just a tiny sample over the past 24 hours {2011, 2012}.

Which of his draft picks in his 13 years have actually “exceeded” expectations? What “rabbits has he pulled out of his hat” with his picks?
{I like Bradley, but I`m not convinced he has actually “exceeded” expectations, given how well regarded he was coming out of college}.

Free agents : As we know, Boston is not a place that FA`s care to come to, which makes draft day all the more important to a team like the Celts.

Besides Posey {for 1 year}, who has he attracted in the FA market?
Amir Johnson? Washed up bums looking for one final contract {Rasheed, Jermaine}?

Trades : DA`s entire legacy revolves around the KG trade {with maybe an assist from McHale who did not want to see KG go to LAL}.

Try to imagine if that trade fell thru. Would DA actually still have a job today? It would`ve been 13 years of what we saw in his first 4 years!

The future? My prediction is out there. He will break your heart with those Net picks. If I`m wrong, feel free to unload!

From Wiki: He recorded twelve double-doubles on the season and recorded a career high of 31 points against Indiana State. On February 27, Johnson achieved career highs with 17 rebounds and 7 blocks against Michigan State {probably blocked a couple of shots by Draymond Green}. He scored in double-figures every game, which included twenty two 20+ games. JaJuan was named a Sporting News Midseason First-Team All-American, along with the likes of Nolan Smith, Jordan Hamilton, Kemba Walker, and fellow Big Ten player, Jared Sullinger. In his senior season, JaJuan was the only player in the nation with career numbers of more than 1,900 points, 850 rebounds, and 250 blocks. On March 7, Johnson was named Big Ten Player of the Year and also Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year…

Can’t understand why anyone would want to draft a kid like that…….

      • RedsLoveChild

Remind me, again….How did JuJuan Johnson`s NBA career turn out?

        Oh yeah, now I remember!
His total NBA minutes amounted to about 6 full games…he never again saw NBA game action following his ultra-brief stay in Boston.

Looks like the other GM`s saw a few things that Ainge missed…such as his poor work ethic, lack of focus, and lacking the strength to be an NBA calibre PF at a scrawny 215 pounds.

Jimmy Butler/Chandler Parsons was what we could have had instead.

        • zippittyay

You seem to have left out the part where even THE BULLS passed on Jimmy Butler. Yeah, he was their SECOND pick. So who *didn’t* ‘blow’ that draft? answer: NO ONE. BTW, I am still waiting for you to compile the list of GMs who you think pick better than Ainge has. I gave you GS and SA, you have failed miserably to come up with anyone else.

          • RedsLoveChild

I don`t root for other teams. I don`t are about other teams. Let them deal with their own issues.

If every GM sucks, and Ainge sucks…that is not going cause me {unlike others on this blog} to want me to “shower praise” upon Ainge.

All I know is this : Boston is not a place with a history of attracting quality free agents. SA has the ability to bring in Aldridge to remain elite. Once Kobe is gone, LA will easily attract top FA talent.

The end result is that getting it “right” on draft day is far more important to a team like Boston. Their margin of error is wafer thin on draft day. They cannot afford to keep blowing draft after draft after draft like it`s nothing.

Unfortunately, history shows that on draft day, Ainge never misses an opportunity to “miss an opportunity”.

          • zippittyay

OK, let me get the gist of your argument here. You believe picking the right guy is easy because YOU could certainly do it, right? Oh, wait… you cant. Well, you must believe that it’s easy for other teams because they do it so much better than Ainge… Oh wait, they DON’T.
Danny Ainge has been in the top 5 of the entire NBA in overall evaluation and picking of draft prospects. The overall results prove this.
Next, you want to move on to free agents. Perhaps Ainge can repeal the state income tax? Maybe Danny can do something about the weather too…… Or maybe you actually believe Celtic fans or just everyone in Boston are racists and THAT will supposedly keep top notch free agents from coming to Boston. 29 Teams didn’t sign LaMarcus Aldridge but we did sign a pretty good free agent that has done well for us at a reasonable price. Maybe you can tell me of some other free agent starting centers in the NBA that make less than 12 mil a season. Oh, that’s right. You can’t look up such things either.

  • Eisenhorn1976

KD + Butler in Boston would own the East for a decade… especially if the Celtics kept at least 1 NJ pick. Man, this is why I try to avoid these articles. It makes me hope way too much.

Of course, in this sort of scenario (and furthering Andrew’s GoT analogy from the article), if Pat Riley is Tywinn Lannister… then Danny has to be Petyr Baelish.
