Video: Jordan Mickey impresses at VSL

One guy who is starting to catch Celtics fans’ attention this summer is Jordan Mickey. The Celtics selected him with the 33rd overall pick in June’s draft, and folks are slowly starting to understand why. Mickey had a very productive night for Boston’s Summer League team on Saturday. He put in 15 points on 6 of 10 shooting to go with 10 boards & 3 blocked shots.

Jordan Mickey led D1 hoops last season with 3.6 blocks per game. And before he was drafted, the 6’8″ Mickey reminded any doubters of just that:

“I would say (to critics) I led college basketball in blocked shots this year,” he said. “That’s 7-footers, 7-foot-2, 7-foot-5 — all of that. I led the country in blocks, so I feel like height really isn’t a big difference to me.”

How can you not love that kind of confidence? We obviously have a long way to go before hailing Mickey as the “rim protector” that Danny’s been looking for, but he’s off to a nice start. Check out his highlights from last night’s win over Portland below, courtesy of PZ.

He’s like a skinny Ben Wallace. If he can be anything like Wallace (though not necessarily at the center spot) I will be so happy.

This guy has it. A spot should be opened up for him, but he might be better served playing everyday in Maine than sitting for LONG stretches in Boston. Looks lively, and tenacious. Bad for him that there are 6 guys with experience and playing for contracts ahead of him. Good future rotational player to have, though.

  he’d get about 10-15m a game if anyone in the frontcourt gets moved, which someone almost certainly will, at least by the deadline. but if no one does, you’re right.

  I’m totally with you, Coach, but I’d like to see him follow his shots for the rebound since he’s such a good presence in the paint. He isn’t KG or in his 30s…go for those put backs, son!

His mid-range shot has really surprised. It is automatic.

He is perfect for small ball line up. Still good size, runs the floor well. Good midrange game, could move out to the 3 point line in time. Obviously a great shot blocker. Look how GSW won by playing Green at the 5. He doesn’t and probably never will have the all around game Green goes but I think that’s what Danny and Brad are going for.

  Why not? After all, the guy was drafted two slots *before* Draymond Green was and has nicer mechanics on his shot. What he lacks in strength he makes up for in quickness and he can get stronger.
