This is an interesting proposition for the Celtics. Bennett is making a #1 draft pick’s salary but he certainly isn’t playing like a top pick (this might explain why everyone was so shocked when the Cavs took him first). He’s ANOTHER power forward on a roster that doesn’t really seem to need another 6’8″, 240 lb guy.
But he does have promise, and he could develop into a good player in a situation where he gets minutes. His injury issues are gone, and a solid team with good structure could do him well.
Personally, I’d call this a no-brainer IF he didn’t make $5.8 million next season. The Celtics would hold the team option for the following season ($7.3 million) and they could just cut him if he doesn’t work out this season. The team DOES have cap space, and they’d turn an essential 2nd round pick (third from last in the first round) into two actual 2nd round picks… giving them 3 of the first 6 picks in the 2nd round.
If the Celtics are cool with spending that money, and if they have the minutes after everything shakes out to give Bennett, then I say give it a whirl.
