Your Morning Dump… Where Rondo doesn’t have a clue about his FT shooting

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big storyline. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.

“It’s very frustrating, in particular this game,” Rondo said. “If I make my free throws, I think we win the game.”

Rondo hit side iron on his first late-game attempt, then found back iron on the other. Boston made a season-high 22 freebies during Friday’s game, but missed seven attempts, with Jared Sullingermissing a pair late as well.

Pressed on his woes, Rondo admitted he’s at a loss for his poor percentage.

“I don’t have a clue really, still trying to figure it out,” he said. “I continue to work on my game and especially get some more free throws up.”

Coach Brad Stevens has said that Rondo frequently has returned to the team’s practice facility after games to work on free throws in hopes of solving his issues. A team with a thin margin for error, the Celtics absolutely need Rondo to be confident at the stripe to help their chances of pulling out the sort of wins that have evaded them to this point.

I thought Rondo’s free throw woes bottomed out with the 2-10 performance against Phoenix.

Wrong.

When Rondo checked into the game with 7+ minutes remaining in the 4th quarter, he was very aggressive. Unfortunately, nothing went his way.

Check out this stat line: 1-8 FG, 0-2 FT, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 TO, and 1 steal. The missed free throws were the cherry topping on the crap sundae.

While I’m encouraged to hear that Rondo is working hard on his free throw shooting, I’m a bit terrified about the mental aspect of this problem. Kevin O’Connor of Celtics Blog wants Rondo to start seeing a sports psychologist. Good luck to the guy who has to crack Rondo’s personality.

Rondo needs to nip this problem immediately or we’re going to start seeing Hack-a-Rondo in the 4th quarters of close games. How many GMs, Danny Ainge included, are going to hand over $80 to $100 million dollars to a point guard who gets the yips at the free throw line?

On Page 2, Joakim Noah is the most annoying player in the NBA.

The combination of the bun, the screaming, and the whining make me hate Joakim Noah more than any player* in the league right now. The biggest smile of my day happened when Noah blew that easy dunk.

But that sob is a helluva player: 15 points, 14 rebounds, 6 blocks, and 6 assists.

*My hate for Kobe has morphed into pity. Poor guy is playing out the final minutes of his glorious career on the shittiest of shitty teams.

yips from the free throw line??!??!!?! that’s funny, he can’t shoot well from beyond 8 ft. From 9 ft and out, his FG% is about 30%. His overall FG% is around 45% only because 75% of his shots are from 8 ft and in. He is a LIFE LONG poor shooter and it cannot be fixed. Two things to note: 1) no star (cough, cough) point guard in the history of the league has ever shot as poorly as Rondo from the FT line. 2) no star (cough, cough) has ever gone to the FT line fewer times per game than Rondo. At least he is smart enough to rarely take it to the cup when the game is on the line as he KNOWS he will miss his FT’s. Danny never intended to re-sign Rondo so don’t worry too much about it.

rondos gonna get less money than what Danny gave him 4 years ago

How do Rondo’s stats now compare to his 2008 figures ? Has he improved year on year? I know we aren’t comparing like with like, because he was playing with much superior players, plus more than any other player his famous “intangibles, playoff Rondo etc” are so hard to measure. If it was possible to recreate the 2008 “big three now, giving Rondo a max contract would mean no place for Ray Allen, so Rondo would need to bring a lot more to the table now. I would still rather have him than not.

I don’t know what happened, but ever since the celtics went down hill, I’ve started to like Noah and Kobe. Noah is the closest thing to KG left in the league. And Kobe, he’s just a bad ass with ice water running through his veins.

I find Gasol more annoying than Noah. The guy cries on every single possession he gets. I understand guys want to get calls, but this guy thinks he deserves a call on literally 90% of his possessions.

Pathetic that we have had to put up with Rondo’s petty shooting since 06. We’ve been trying to mask his holes in his games for far too long and for the first time of his career he’s exposed as he no longer relegates behind 3 HOFers. Danny CANNOT give this dude a max contract, he’s crazy and stupid to do so. He’s gonna have to settle for 16 million because I feel he’s worth that and nothing more. You absolutely do NOT hand out max money to a guy that cannot put the team on his back! As the season goes we’ll see how overrated he’s been his entire career. Sad to see virtually every other PG outplaying this fool, he’s at 9.9 PPG so far, what kind of max player averages those garbage stat points? LMAO! Wouldn’t surprise me if Ainge did give him max, he’s the same guy that overpaid one-dimensional Bradley. I would gladly trade this bum for someone much more capable like John Wall or Damian Lillard, PGs that can take over a game and actually hit shots, not bobble and choke like a loser.
