Your Morning Dump… Where it’s time for Danny Ainge hot takes!!!

elmo

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big story line. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.

The Garden crowd’s response to Ainge’s first choice, and his inability to deliver a trade with the No. 3 pick, was akin to how New Yorkers greet unpopular draft picks — like Kristaps Porzingis — with loud displeasure.

Boston Herald

I’m not sure I know what people expected once Boston wasn’t able to turn the #3 pick into a player they felt was worth the trouble.

In the immediate aftermath, there was so much hand-wringing about how Boston had screwed up a chance to fleece the Colangelos or pick up Jimmy Butler, and how Phoenix was going to “auction off” Kris Dunn that nobody noticed that none of those deals materialized. Khris Middleton, Jimmy Butler, Greg Monroe, Nerlens Noel and Robert Covington all ended the evening in the same place they started (and it’s questionable to what extent Boston was interested in Monroe in the first place). Phoenix didn’t, in fact, auction off Kris Dunn. They picked for need, kind of, with Dragan Bender.

By the end of the evening, after everyone had made their last “Guerschon Ya-but-seriously” jokes, it was pretty clear that there weren’t many deals for Boston to work. They weren’t in the running for the Serge Ibaka auction, and nothing else happened. Optionally, they could’ve deferred the 16 & 23 picks to other years, if another team wanted into the first round, but as this year has demonstrated, having a huge pile of picks isn’t a guarantee that you’ll be able to consolidate them into something bigger.

Was Danny over-valuing the #3 pick? I don’t think so. Are you going to argue that Minnesota over-valued the #5 pick because they too weren’t able to make deals for Butler or some assemblage of Sixers players and picks?

Page 2: Guerschon Who?

Even Guerschon Yabusele was surprised.

The Boston Celtics selected him with the 16th overall selection in the 2016 NBA Draft on Thursday night. The 20-year-old power forward from France possesses a formidable frame — he stands 6-foot-8 and weighs 240 pounds — and an intriguing combination of skills.

“No, nobody was expecting,” Yabusele, who was sitting in the stands at Barclays Center, told reporters after being drafted, via Matthew Dollinger of Sports Illustrated. “I see them coming close to me, see my name. So I was really surprised to be in here. But I was so happy.”

Boston.com

Here’s where people need to take a long and realistic look at the Celtics’ current roster:

It’s not bad.

While it’s almost inevitable that at least one or two players selected after the #16 spot are going to be better than players currently on the Celtics roster, you don’t know who they are. And, in any given year, most GMs don’t know either. If you look at the various late draft success stories you’ll notice that they’re from different teams (Butler: Bulls, Green: Warriors; Thomas: Kings; Parsons: Rockets; etc.) You’ll also notice that teams which pick those guys have often already burned a pick (Warriors grabbed Ezeli before they picked Green) on another, worse, player, which should provide conclusive evidence that this part of the draft is a magnificent crap-shoot every single year.

So, obviously, Danny is thinking Draft-And-Stash at this point, and why not? Everything after the #3 pick in this draft was gravy. House money. A chance, possibly, to net a rotation player from a team trying to get back into the first round. That’s assuming that deals did not materialize.

Getting bent out of shape because a pick doesn’t match the opinion you’ve formed over nights and weekends of casual TV watching and internet perusal is just silly.

Page 3: Trades! Finally! What?

The Celtics dealt a pair of second-round picks (Nos. 31 and 35) to the Memphis Grizzlies for the Los Angeles Clippers’ 2019 first-round pick, per Jeff Goodman of ESPN. Memphis owned this Clippers pick from a previous trade. The first-round pick the Celtics get from Grizzlies in ’19 is lottery protected and could turn into a 2nd rounder under certain conditions

NESN

This pick is lottery protected in 2019-2021, and then it turns into second round picks. This deal wasn’t fireworks. Shoot. It wasn’t even sparklers. Still, it took the total number of picks from a ridiculous 8 to a more manageable 6.

Finally: I get on my soapbox. Again.

I don’t live in Boston. I don’t live anywhere near Boston.

Occasionally, I get a little annoyed when I see Boston fans talk about how Boston fans are better than fans in other cities.

Collectively, you all had a chance to be better than those Knicks fans who booed Kristaps Porzingis last year, and a lot of you failed miserably at it.

Some 19 year old kid who’s spoken highly of things that Boston fans are allegedly proud of, gets booed because somehow he didn’t turn into I don’t know what? Jimmy Butler or Khris Middleton or who knows what?

Look, booing the guys on the other team is expected. Booing your own guys when they don’t show up to play is understandable. Booing a 19 year old kid who owes your team absolutely NOTHING at this point? You don’t own a piece of this kid. You have no right. You’re wayyyy out of line with that. Even more so booing the #23 pick because, I don’t know, he didn’t come with a factory guarantee to be at least as good as some other tall European that you’ve already heard of.

Oh, and booing the guy who literally bought this team a title?

That’s also pretty low rent.

I don’t know the overlap between Red’s Army readers and people who were either at the Garden booing the Celtics, or agreeing loudly with that kind of conduct. Maybe it’s relatively small. All I know is it’s a really bad look.

Collectively, Celtics fans have earned just about every upcoming reminder of this evening’s poor behavior. Perhaps even more so for repeatedly taking Knicks fans to task for the exact same thing, and for perhaps being a bit too quick to insist that they’re “better” fans than those that support other teams.

Because I’m here to tell you that a lot of you. A lot of you, weren’t very good fans last night.

And yeah, feel free to disagree with that statement, but only if you think that those Knicks fans last year were every bit as good as you are.

fyi: it’s a business not to be taken personal. booing displeasure was the right thing and sends a message that upper mngt should’ve overpaid for proven talent. now they’re stuck baby sitting

    • CallingBatman

Details are sketchy but it appears Chicago & Philly expected to be way overpaid. Our #3 pick doesn’t seem like he’ll need babysitting, two of the picks are stashed and gainfully employed in Europe where they can further develop. Late 2nd rounders are what they are. Truth is, we don’t know. One of these guys could be a gem, one of the established players could’ve been injured the first scrimmage of the season.

    • Richard Jensen

You’re entitled to your opinion, but if you laughed about the way Knicks fans turned around on Kristaps, well, you’re living in a glass house.

  • CFH

I’d rather get to know the chess-playing teenager than cough up four picks (two of them high lottery), Smart, Crowder, and Bradley for Jimmy Butler. That’s the deal I would have booed– and I like Butler a lot, but you can’t gut a team completely for one all-star.

Not ecstatic about this draft but not depressed or angry either.

    • Finks

I’m excited about Brown. This guy’s going to look good on some game highlight videos. He’s a beast! Will he deliver banner 18? Not on his own, and not next year, but this dude oozes of awesomeness. Remember our last board game phenom and Rondo turned out pretty OK…

      • Curt Hays

He sounds just like Jeff Green.

        • forever_green

          OMG! I hope not!

        • Astarot

Yeah let’s hope he can develop at least a reliable jump shot otherwise Jeff Green 2.0 is a probable option.

          • stevemb34

Jeff Green had no motor. I’ve heard a lot of potential downsides to the kid but never that he doesn’t play incredibly hard every day.

        • Sean

          Was thinking the same thing.

        • Dave

Nah, Jeff Green never had the work ethic or that strong personality that this kid has already. Jimmy Buckets had some nice things to say about him after playing 1 on 1 with him:

          http://www.masslive.com/celtics/index.ssf/2016/06/boston_celtics_nba_draft_pick.html

Isiah worked out with him too and seems to love him, guess the rumours are true that his shot isn’t as broken as they say it was:

I think there are a few factors that hinder us in making the trades 1.-Teams know that we have too much, and can ask for the farm because we cannot use all of our picks or play all of our players. Wish Danny could have found a deal but not that far fetched to believe others were asking too much. 2- Teams don’t want to be the next Brooklyn and get screwed by Danny. I would assume other GM’s are extremely cautious trying to trade with us after seeing how we fleeced them.

For everyone so upset about not getting Butler, I would look at the bright side. If we gave up as much as they were reportedly asking, I don’t know if our team is any better than Chicago last year – even if we were to add one of the higher ranked free agents. And that Chicago team didn’t make the playoffs. Take a look at NY after the Carmelo trade, they gutted their team for him and were stuck for years after. After everything seen and heard out of Chicago last year, I don’t know if you want Butler as your #1. Monroe + Middleton or Gordon Hayward are not making you a championship team, a bit better yes but not contenders. If they could help secure KD then those are moves you need to make but that’s seeming less likely by the day. All in all, it sucks having to be patient and still wait for “fireworks” but smart move to plan for the future and leave trade options open.

  • Astarot

So I’ve been preparing myself to put together this extended comment. Let’s start with thin minor trade. I understand that they drafted Deyonta Davies and Rade Zagorac for Memphis? (pick has to be made) It’s funny cuz’ Davies look like one of the more reasonable choices.

Now picks 16 and 23 – both draft and stash to me. Even tough Zizic at lest at first glace looks like NBA ready and he’s intriguing. Again something tells me that he’s draft and stash. And I have problem with that. What was all that talking before the draft, they control “entire draft” (I’ll admit it was media talking to some extent)? But they were looking at all kinds of players from different parts of Draft ladder. And after all of that using both picks for draft and stash players? That to me is bad assets management. You wanna trade, ok. But be ready if trades don’t come your way make the most of it especially when you can (potentially of course) find talent even in the second round.

And now the picks. You’re choosing stash and draft guys when players like Ellenson, Labissiere and Jones are still on the board. Were they really taking the best player? I don’t believe it anymore. And even if they did you should at least try to draft mostly based on an upside. Sure it’s something the hardest to assess and it’s the most risky but Draft it’s the time to do that. I don’t know if the players I mentioned will ever be batter than those Cs took but I think the chance for that to happen is bigger.

Just to clarify, I like Wyc’s comment about building year by year, I understand that it’s not all up to you nether in the draft or trying to make a deal. I’m not inpatient I want Cs to contend for a next 6-10 years not 2 or 4. I want Ainge to at least try to build a dynasty. You can start in the Draft even tough every draft year is different (look GSW who they trade for did they trade for any of their stars)? If you’re giving up assets as Wyc said you can’t let the other team to rip you off, you can’t also give up all of your assets therefore jeopardizing your long term future. All that being said, where are all those plans A-Z? They had a plan to make one or two deals (bigger or smaller) at least it seams like it and when that didn’t work out they just had to manage those picks the way they could still have room on the roster after the Draft. To me that’s not resonable.

And to support my previous statements few notes:

    1. Ainge knows that deals on the Draft night are hard to make.

    2. Ainge knows picks losing value the closer you’re to the Draft night

So I’m not mad that the deal didn’t happen. I’m irritated that when it didn’t Ainge do his best making picks (it looks like it for now). They were fixated on trading the picks at least to me. Entire draft night shows that deals are tough which means you have to be good at drafting the right players especially when you have plethora of picks. Sure that depends on how “strong” the draft is and how committed and patient you want to be developing those players. I think you have to be very committed and very patient. As a conclusion I can only say that in terms of draft process and approach towards the draft, developing players, and idea for a Celtics long term future something has to change. If one of those guys turns out to be a big time player even in 2-3 years I’ll take that back (even tough I’m pretty sure no one from Ainge crew didn’t see that coming and they were just lucky).

    • Curt Hays

Solid post. I predict that all of these picks will be starters for the Celtics when we win our next banner. 🙂

      • Astarot

Yeah I’d probably eat my own shoes in front of Ainge if that happened 🙂

        • Curt Hays

Not even gonna hold you to it. But if it happens, I want video.

  • Falcon Falcone

I was there last night. I wasnt booing, but i also wasnt cheering. It was odd to see Wyc visibly shaken by the boos. I wasnt expecting the boos. It wasnt a defening “lebron” boo, but it was booing mixed with some unsettling. I dont think anyone in the crowd was booing Jaylen Brown.. they were upset at the lack of a splash. The splash we’ve been waiting for. I do think last night was a clunker for the C’s who had the most to gain. But free agency is around the corner.. we’ll see.

    • Richard Jensen

It’s a ‘cheap shot’ to scold fans who consider themselves ‘better fans’ than Knicks fans and act just like them?

Doing the exact same thing Knicks fans did last year makes you the same as Knicks fans. Not worse, but certainly not “better.”

      • Curt Hays

That was your very first point.

“Occasionally, I get a little annoyed when I see Boston fans talk about how Boston fans are better than fans in other cities…Collectively, you all had a chance to be better than those Knicks fans who booed Kristaps Porzingis last year, and a lot of you failed miserably at it.”

However, aren’t you referring to the people at the draft?

        • Richard Jensen

Even though I get a bit annoyed at Boston fans for saying they’re better fans, if the Garden had remained even *neutral*, on a pretty disappointing draft night, I’d have said something about that.

Instead you get this dichotomy of “Knicks fans were terrible because they booed Kristaps. We, on the other hand, were being good fans by booing Jaylen.”

          • KGino

Listen I don’t agree with the booing because a.) none of the people booing have any idea if Jaylen Brown will be the next Anthony Bennet or the next Paul Pierce and b.) those deals on the table were meaningless to me (besides butler), none of them really make a huge impact on us reaching the next level or signing a huge FA. BUT I believe you are blowing the booing out of proportion… The situation with us and the Knicks was/is completely different. The Knicks fans booed the guy because he was a Euro player and not a lot of them end up being great. The Celtics fans booed not because of who they drafted, but because this was supposed to be the start of the “fireworks” we were promised by ownership, and developing a 19 year old isn’t exactly a “win now” “fireworks” type move. Celtics fans are disappointed this rebuild isn’t working quicker, and all the assets DA has acquired haven’t been flipped to get the next KG of the franchise yet. Every fan base is impatient, and on a night when there were so many rumors every fan had an opinion of what should happen. And about 99% of them didn’t want this particular outcome, hence the boos.

Can we all just agree that Boston fans are better than Miami fans? 😛

          • Curt Hays

Does that mean that NY fans are better than Miami fans???

          • KGino

            yes, yes it does.

          • Curt Hays

            #90skids

          • Mike C

            Well said.

          • Richard Jensen

“Can we all just agree that Boston fans are better than Miami fans? :P”

            Better than these guys?

            https://youtu.be/EUrZ7dWitC8

Yeah, I think we can agree on that 😀

      • Sean

The only things worse than knicks fans are lakers/heat fans

        • Curt Hays

The best post on the reddit Draft thread leading up to the start of the draft: “F*** the Lakers”.

No matter what day or time it is, it’s the most relevant sentence spoken.

          • Sean

they don’t deserve ingram. but I truly believe randle/russell are scrubs who get points on bad teams.

          • Curt Hays

I disagree about Randle. He’s the real deal.

          • Sean

I don’t believe in him at all but if he is good then D.A. failed at passing on him to keep fat sully

    • Sean

We all know the kid was going to see the boo’s later, he still started his career with us with a nice welcoming 25 seconds of boos. What a great 1st impression.

    • Curt Hays

While I don’t exactly agree with you, at least your post is reasonable. Thanks for expressing your opinion without being a dick.

    • Mike C

Well said. Every site on the net discussing the 2016 winners & losers of the draft had the Celtics the biggest loser of the night. Bad fans or not, Wyc and Ainge blew a golden opportunity to land a key player for this franchise. If Brown plays the kind of “Hustle & Grit” type of basketball Celtics expect of their players, he’ll get a ton of cheers during his career. This kid just made it into the NBA,… I seriously doubt he cares what happened with the fans last night!

  • Red’s Cigar

    Dear Rich,

Part of being a sports fan is having an opinion on what moves you believe would be in the best interest of your favorite team. Another part is expressing your approval or displeasure at certain moves that said team makes, whether it be trades, draft picks etc.

The “booing” was directed solely at the Celtics upper management, and not at Jaylen Brown, who you are desperately trying to protect as if he is in some sort of danger. He’ll be fine.

I guess you think fans shouldn’t react or have opinions about their teams, just sit back and drink the cool-aid. In fact, you probably think I should just shut up and enjoy your blog just because you wrote it.

    • Sean

You need a little less salt in your diet.

      • Curt Hays

I was thinking of the word “sour”.

    • Curt Hays

I agree with you in regards to being in favor of fans expressing their opinions.

However, this is an unreasonable post. It’s actually very childish. Rich is supporting the idea that we should not ruin our players’ first Celtics experience.

      • Red’s Cigar

How is their “first Celtics experience” ruined at all? And you do realize he’s now making millions right? I think he’ll pull through. #PrayersForJaylen

        • Curt Hays

First of all, Len Bias also got drafted, but he never made Millions. That part isn’t a given. Sure he may feel excited, but he’ll always remember hearing boos on the biggest night of his teenage life…and my fellow fans will always be responsible for it.

          • Red’s Cigar

So everyone should be obligated to cheer so his night isn’t ruined. Got it. And bringing up Len Bias is very distasteful.

          • Curt Hays

Wait, wait, so you DO care about respecting some players. Just not the living ones who just got added to the team. Got it.

          • forever_green

Curt, Nobody was booing the guy we drafted, just the guy that drafted him. 😉

          • Curt Hays

I can accept that. Did anyone walk down to the stage and let Jaylen know that? How was he supposed to be able to tell the difference?

          • Red’s Cigar

This stance is baffling to me. What the hell is this argument? This is bananaland right?!

          • Curt Hays

You are a piece of garbage that I have no use for.

Edit: Sorry, just thinking out loud, and Google speech to text picked it up. That was honestly directed at my malfunctioning keyboard, not any commenters on this blog, but I’m sure that was obvious and no one will have a negative response.

          • Red’s Cigar

And I’m the childish one? You’re a troll.

          • Curt Hays

I’m not a troll–I just proved my point in a way that appears to be at your expense, but it isn’t.

I agree that participation ribbons are harmful to society.

And similar to what you’ve said, Jaylen’s participation ribbon will be in the form of millions of little green pieces of paper deposited in his TD Bank account.

All that being said, having rewatched the announcement of the draft of Brown, it appears that the booing was mostly in TD Garden and very little at the actual draft, so he was actually welcomed pretty decently. Because he couldn’t hear what was in the Garden, I’m not as bothered by it. It wasn’t on the level of the reaction to Porzingis, so I probably should’ve just watched it again before jumping into the fray.

I still don’t like what you wrote about Rich though.

          • Mike C

When he shows up to his first game, we can have a video tirbute to show the kid how excited the fans are to have him play for the Celtics. Then we can have a second video play showing how Wyc & Ainge are incapable of making any quality moves in pursuit of banner 18, and let the kid know he’ll be fishing early each post season for the next decade or so.

          • Curt Hays

LOL, I’m just saying that voicing an opinion to Wyc is one thing. Appearing to boo the crap out of a guy on national television is another.

I actually laughed out loud at the thought of a tribute video to Wyc and Danny’s unfruitful pursuit of Banner 18.

          • Red’s Cigar

Haha Curt, do you think every kid deserves a ribbon too? Maybe we can give Jaylen a participation award on opening night?

    • Richard Jensen

      Dear Cigar,

You do what you want. Just don’t tell me that acting like Knicks fans makes you somehow “better” than Knicks fans.

      • Red’s Cigar

        Richard,

I can assure you that I have never once told you that I am “better” than any New York Knick fan. This argument over who has better fans isn’t logical because there is no scale for measurement.

        • Richard Jensen

Then, in all honesty, congratulations on maintaining a sense of perspective that is not exactly common in sports.

  • Curt Hays

I’m just pissed that Danny didn’t draft Brandon Ingram. He’s the worst ever.

    • Sean

      lol

  • Sean

The whole night was a bust. HOWEVER, you’re right our fans shouldn’t boo like that, we just need another way to voice our displeasure. But if Cs fans stop showing up to games that’d be worse wouldn’t it?

    • Curt Hays

I just don’t see how it was a bust. No one has any idea how these players will end up. There were only 2 players that were considered relevant anyway. How could anyone expect Danny to draft Ingram with the third?

While I am also disappointed, I don’t think there’s any way that we could’ve come out of this draft otherwise. I mean, I’d have been happy if we got Buddy, but he could be another RJ for all we know.

Edit: A trade would be the obvious other way to avoid disappointment, but Wyc was clear that no one likes to trade with us now. We’ll let Brad develop these guys and then we’ll get some good trades.

      • Sean

Aside from all the trade rumors, Brown was already projected in the #3-8 range so that wasn’t world-ending.

It was nobody foreigner pick after nobody foreigner pick when a few good role players were still on the board is annoying. How many of the 8 total draft picks we started the night with will play next year? Maybe one? Thats a bust bro

        • Curt Hays

Oh ok, my bad. I don’t know enough about who was left at that point, so I can’t say you’re wrong. I just keep reminding myself that Pistol Pete was Serbian.

          • Sean

D.A. never really drafts guys who were big names in college even when he has the opportunity so idk why I expect him to. But since Marcus Smart, Sully, Fab Melo, & RJ were all “stars” in college I kinda see why he avoids it.

  • RedsLoveChild

    Leave it to “Traitor Dan”….

1} He uses the #3 pick to select a 6`7” guy who is described as a “project”!
    Not a 7`7″ project, but a 6`7″ project.

2} He uses the 16th pick on some fat guy from France!
As if we didn`t have enough fat untalented guys in Sully and Smart.

    • Sean

The hate is strong with this post. But you have a point, Danny does like a few fatties on the roster.

    • Curt Hays

He had to meet his quota. We lost Brandon Bass AND Big Baby.

    • zippittyay

      That *fat* guy?

      • zippittyay

What do YOUR abs look like?

      • RedsLoveChild

Photoshop or very recent weight loss?

        He`s listed anywhere from 260-275.
This appears to be a recent pic of him proudly displaying his loss, since he looked much heavier in the clips showing him playing.

Hope he stays on his diet!

  • Sean

When are we all going to accept that Danny drafts random nobodies every year? Don’t we always end up cheering for them anyway? Who saw AB being that good when he was drafted? Rozier showed some talent last year too. D.A. isn’t the best drafter and he had a shit draft last night but he has a talent for making shit shine like gold

    • Astarot

I’m not sure about it. It’s Stevens who makes “shit shine like gold” not Ainge. We’re cheering for them cuz’ that’s what most Cs fans are like. You have to be rally bad (or be yourself – read be Rondo for some fans) to discourage fans. If you’re showing devotion, passion and willingness to develop then those fans will cheer for you.

      • Sean

There’s been plenty of Celtics players I’ve not cheered for recently lol. Sasha pavlovic, sully, james young, evan turner (still). Guess I’m a bad fan. And Ainge was winning trades way before Stevens was hired.

        • Curt Hays

You don’t cheer for Evan? You’re a bad fan. You probably boo’d Jaylen Brown to his face.

          • Sean

I live in alpharetta so I could if I wanted to lol. I’m probably a worse fan because I would’ve traded IT for Ibaka last night.

          • Curt Hays

You WHAT? Sean, you’re a terrible fan. Go cheer for the Lakers…no, I take that back. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone!

Traded IT for Ibaka…and you don’t cheer for Evan. What happened to your humanity?!?!

          • Sean

Forgive me I want Brandon Bass back

          • jrleftfoot

lol— that French guy may be the next Brandon

          • Astarot

Yeah not cheering for Evan is strange after last season but you know it’s his bad reputation that goes with him. I wasn’t exactly jumping to the air when we got him so last year definitely was a surprise.

        • Astarot

I’m not saying you’re a bad fan. Not my intention at all. Ainge was winning trades – true but I meant drafting players that Stevens has an ability to develop players and use them the right way even if the choices made by Ainge regarding drafting player A instead of player B are not the best.

          • Sean

Its all gravy. We’re fortunate to have stevens as a coach.

  • Michael Biscardi

The draft definitely didn’t have the franchise-altering fireworks we were all hoping for, but three quick potential bright spots:
1.) The historically bad analytics on Brown are worrisome, but if Haberstroh’s report that he hit 76/100 3pt shots during his workout with the Celtics is true (vs. Wiljter’s 77, Murray’s 79, and Hield’s 86), then his jump shot may not be quite as bad as advertised.
2.) My guess is that Danny elected to draft-and-stash the other two first-rounders to free up a little extra cash for potential free agent signings this summer.
3.) Loved the Bentil & Jackson picks – first round talents that can step in off the bench next year, if needed, and for short money.

    • Sean

Tbh I’m betting none of these picks get PT. MAYBE Jaylen Brown.

      • Michael Biscardi

Agreed. If they’re getting serious run, something is wrong. I see Brown getting 10-15 minutes a night depending on other roster moves, but that’s about it

        • Sean

I think they’re all headed for the d league. We still have free agency to go through. Betting we wont get a star, but we’ll underpay a solid role player or two.

          • Michael Biscardi

Harrison Barnes isn’t Jeff Green. Harrison Barnes isn’t Jeff Green. Harrison Barnes isn’t Jeff Green. Say it with me!

          • Sean

Im praying for al horford or chandler parsons. We’ll probably end up with kent bazemore.

          • Eisenhorn1976

            Please not Bazemore…. ugh.

          • j k

Ok. Harrison Barnes isn’t Jeff Green. However, Jeff Green is better than Harrison Barnes.

            See how that works?

          • jrleftfoot

The Euros are more likely to stay there for now. D the salary leaguers count against the salary cap.

    • Curt Hays

      1) Rondo hit like 17 consecutive 3s against Durant in the All-Star weekend Horse contest.

      2) He’ll probably just trade them.

      3) I can’t really complain either.

      • Michael Biscardi

Haha all true, just looking for glimmers of hope that Brown’s basketball skills have the potential to much his athleticism and overall IQ.

        • Curt Hays

He is a smart guy. I am hoping that means Brad can really shape him. Just figured your comment was worth of a response.

          • Michael Biscardi

Thanks man – you and me both brother!

          • forever_green

If Rondo was still here we’d at least dominate checkers and chess for years to come.

          • Curt Hays

            LOL

On a serious note, I feel like Rondo would try to break Jaylen’s fingers with every chest pass.

          • forever_green

            True.

          • Eisenhorn1976

            Don’t forget Connect Four.

  • RedsLoveChild

Why can`t Belichick make all the draft selections for the Celtics?

He`s not busy in late June, and someone clearly has to guide or mentor DA.

    • Sean

not a pats fan. belichick would have cameras in every draft room. no thanks.

      • jrleftfoot

I wonder if Red ever deflated the basketballs

  • Astarot

By the way did you see Philly fans reaction after Simmons selection? That was absolutely hilarious. Like they’ve just won a championship. Guess that happens when you’re disgrace for the city year after year. You’re just looking for an air to breathe cuz’ you can’t stand smell of shit anymore.

  • RedsLoveChild

Jaylen Brown is a poor man`s Anthony Bennett!

    • jq0216

your wit is a poor man’s tosh.o and your evaluation skills are a poor man’s billy king 🙂

      • RedsLoveChild

If this first use of the 3 Brooklyn picks is any indication of what`s ahead, Ainge will have accomplished the impossible.

He`ll be the only GM ever “taken to the woodshed” by Billy King!

    • Eisenhorn1976

Let’s, you know, wait until he actually plays a season before passing judgement.

I mean, comparing any NBA player to Anthony Bennett is almost like engaging in hate speech. Come on, man. That’s way too harsh.

      • RedsLoveChild

        Sorry, really meant to say…

Jaylen Brown is a poor man`s Kedrick Brown.

  • MikeABQ

Something else to consider- I think Brad Stevens greatest skill so far has been getting the most out of guys. I don’t think he is just sitting on the beach somewhere when all these workouts and interviews are going on. I am assuming he was a big part of discussion in taking Brown and thinking he can get more out of him then some of the other guys who were available there.

Dissapointed no trade for Butler but don’t see much point second guessing pick when none of those guys 3-8 is making us a contender next year. Makes sense to take guy with the potential.

    • Astarot

You’re optimistic about Steven’s involvement. I’m sure his opinions matters but only to the point where Ainge say “I’m the boss”. I mean remember when Butler was in the draft? Let’s just assume Rivers really was on Butler and what happened in the draft night? Ainge went completely opposite way. And few years latter he was saying how other GM’s fall in love with the players. He’s falling in love with the players just the same and in that case Stevens’ opinion has limited impact. Obviously I’m not inside and I’m not saying they are not working but to me someting’s wrong when it comes to decision making who’s the one to pick. Sure Ainge is responsible for those decisions he is the boss but I’d say Stevens’ involvement should be bigger.

      • MikeABQ

That’s a good point on Butler and Rivers so I could be vastly overestimating how much input Stevens has. I would hope he would have gained some leverage at this point considering he just got extended but so did Danny. With that said, I do think Stevens gives the front office a bit more faith in taking a younger guy who needs to develop a bit more compared to older guy who is closer to being a finished product

      • Richard Jensen

        Don’t forget the following:
Rivers is/was very good at telling people what they want to hear.
Butler, AB and Ray Allen all play the same basic position.
Anyone care to guess how much Rivers would’ve ‘loved’ Butler if the C’s had drafted him and he was buried on the bench his first two/three years in the league.

        • Eisenhorn1976

Yeah. I like Doc but After watching the train wreck of GM Doc, I don’t believe anything he says about whether he liked so-and-so player.

      • Eisenhorn1976

Whether he was a big voice in selecting Brown or not, It doesn’t negate the fact that Brad is able to get the most out of his players.

You can bet that Brad is studying tape of him right now and thinking up ways to make him the best possible player he can be. If Brad can turn Steez into an EC Player of the Week and Evan Turner into a reliable and solid veteran presence, you can bet he’s going to get as much out of Brown as possible. It also works that Brown is still very young — i.e. not as set in his ways/easier to teach. He probably couldn’t ask for a better NBA mentor than Brad.

        • Astarot

Good point let’s hope we’ll see Brown getting better and better under Stevens

  • jq0216

    love the soapboxing. preach, brother!

  • art

We all have the right to boo like it or not. Even the ESPN guys were surprised that Brown got picked at 3. Heck, Danny could traded down 4 or 5 positions and still have gotten Brown. Based on everything I’ve read and heard, the best player at the 3rd spot was Kris Dunn. And they passed on him. Yeah, I’m disappointed that the best player was not chosen. And once again, just like last year, we’re questioning the C’s front office. And whether the pick will be good or not. All that time and anticipation for disappointment. We have a right to boo.

    • Richard Jensen

      Nobody said you can’t boo.

But booing Brown and ragging on the Knicks fans for booing Kristaps and then cheering Kristaps, is intellectually dishonest.

      • Red’s Cigar

We literally couldn’t care less about the Knicks and their fans. The only people that mention that still are on ESPN. That’s it. Relax.

    • Eisenhorn1976

How can the ESPN guys be surprised when their own guy Chad Ford had the Celtics taking Brown in one of his mock drafts? He’s been literally telling people for weeks that the Celtics were seriously considering taking Brown.

      • art

He was only predicting who they would pick. Who the best player available was at number 3 was a different list.

        • Eisenhorn1976

Sure — but that doesn’t negate my point that they shouldn’t have been surprised.

    • jrleftfoot

People have the right to boo and others have the right to consider booing a 20 year old who is going to be on the team you root for stupid and obnoxious. Nobody`s rights are being infringed here.

  • Astarot

Let’s just ask Stephen A. about everything: the booing, the draft, particular players, how they will do in 10 years, free agency, trades that should be made, he’ll tell you he’s got entire NBA inside his head doesn’t he? Just don’t argue if you disagree with something you’d hear he’ll probably kill with his look.

  • Eisenhorn1976

It’s crazy that Dunn is suddenly this hot commodity — this is the same fellow that didn’t want to work out with the Celtics, is the same age range as Buddy Hield (which was, incidentally, one of the biggest reasons people didn’t think Hield deserved to be picked high) and can’t really shoot based on all the scouting reports.

Let’s put it this way: maybe Dunn is a better player than Brown — but do you really want your GM picking a guy whom he didn’t have a chance to work out? He’s not in the caliber of a player like Lebron or Anthony Davis that you draft him sight unseen. There were legitimate concerns about Dunn’s game that could’ve been answered in the right forum — but if you never got the chance to see him up close, are you really doing your job? I mean, as an employer, I would be very sore at any employee of mine who didn’t do his due diligence and just acted based on received wisdom.

Besides, how much playing time was he going to get playing time with IT, AB and Smart — not to mention Rozier and RJ, in the mix?

I think people were secretly hoping that fake Marc Stein trade of Noel/Covington/late 1st rounder for #3 (ostensibly Dunn) was real. I believe Wyc when he says that the deals in place were rip-offs; he has no reason to lie — I suspect that deal was simply Colangelo’s spin because he’d been prepping Philly fans for the Kris Dunn era in the days leading into the draft.

My feeling is that Stein doesn’t really talk to the Celtics FO but to the guys on the other end. Remember that Rondo-to-Houston for Parsons deal a few years back? As the days wore on, it became more and more obvious that it was Morey feeding stuff to Stein and not Danny. Danny has mastered saying lots of things without really saying anything so I doubt he’s the type to leak trade details the way that deal was being leaked. Up until today, he’s been cagey about any deals he’s talked about. The only one I believe he’s really opened up on (that he didn’t close) was Rondo for CP3.

I agree that the booing was a bit overboard, though… but if it means that it’ll inspire the Karma gods into making Brown this year’s KP, I’m all for it.

    • jrleftfoot

Dunn has had shoulder issues, which seem to be more and more common. We have lost Bradley and Olynyk for significant periods because of shoulder problems.

      • Eisenhorn1976

All the more reason to avoid him, then.

    • art

Do you know what happened between the C;s front office and Dunn. Did they try to bring him in but he refused? The only thing I’ve heard is that he said he would be very happy to be drafted by the Celtics.

      • Eisenhorn1976

I’ve listened to so many podcasts about this that it’s all starting to blend BUT what I do recall is that his people wouldn’t let him work out in order to protect his value.

  • swissflix

Having recovered from the first wave of disappointment, i decided to trust Danny and give him the benefit of the insider. Innocent until proven guilty. Let’s give Brown a shot to prove himself. Cannot wait for summer league!

  • stevemb34

My only beef with the Cs last night is for not grabbing the Turkish kid (a big shooting 2 guard who you could also stash!!!) at 16 and not just taking Deyonta when he fell into our laps at 31. We need bigs and he’s got lottery talent in some areas. Even if you trade him later, I wanted to at least bring him to camp and see if he stuck. LOVE the Brown and Zizic picks

  • stevemb34

Also want to say I’m ecstatic we didn’t trade next year’s BK pick. That draft is supposed to be loaded. It is not even in the conversation unless it’s for PG (not available anymore if he ever was after getting Teague) or Cousins. Not worth it for Butler or Haywood and no one wants to talk to us unless they can potentially get that. Let’s just not forget we are waaaaaay ahead of schedule. We’ve used 1 Brooklyn pick so far. Trust the process.

  • AC3

I don’t believe Butler was ever on the table really. We would’ve had to give the Leprechaun with the parquet. Red’s secret wizard books, Brad Stevens as assistant coach and their choice of players. They probably still woulda turned it down. As far as the boo birds, free speech and all that, plus the word “fireworks” should’ve never been said, but just like summertime… no class. Maybe an “Oh!” or a “Hey!” even a quiet “#@&*(!” to yourself, but a two minute boovation? KG type deals ain’t so easy I’m thinking, that’s what made it so special. Brown’s got intrigue. Now, rather than rewarding us fans with triumphant dunks for our warm welcome, he’ll be spiting us for our collective douchery. Either way I think he’s gonna get it done. The team has been improving steadily. I’m optimistic for another jump up this season. No more “but where’s my superstar!” tantrums. One might just grow on a tree that’s green…
