Jamal Murray breaks Celtics pre-draft shooting record

The Celtics hosted former Kentucky guard Jamal Murray in Waltham today. Turns out, the kid is a pretty good shooter when he’s wide open:

“I have the mind of a ‘1’ in a ‘2’ guard’s body,” Murray said. “I believe I can score on anybody. In college I got better at playing the 2, kind of got a feel for it coming off screens, found my rhythm. Before that I was a natural point guard. I’m a big guard, whether a 1 or 2.”

Does Murray think he’s the best player in this draft?

“Yeah, I think so. That’s not a knock on anybody, I’m just looking back on the work I’ve put in, how far I’ve come, how quickly I learn, how quickly I adapt to my surroundings and how easy I fit into a team. I believe I’m the best player in the draft, but every team needs what they need,” he said. “I just want to go to the right team. The team that wants me. The team that believes in my potential and [couldn’t make out] I have right now. Someone who is going to use down the stretch and have faith in me.”

On Wednesday, he spent the morning working out for the Celtics, proving that and setting a record of sorts.

The guard made 79 of 100 shots from 3-point range in a drill around the arc. The previous mark was 77 this spring. The drill involved taking 10 shots from beyond the arc at five spots on the court and going twice around.

A lot of the early mock drafts had Murray going #3 to Boston. But Dragan Bender is now the hot name at #3.

I’m still pulling for a trade. But if I had to choose between Murray and Bender, I’m going with Murray.

For those wondering, Gonzaga’s Kyle Wiltjer held the previous record of 77 triples.

Just curious.. how did James ‘Can’t Hit The Broad Side of a Barn’ Young do in pre-draft workouts?

    • Jim

      Yeah and Fab Melo.

Could the Blue Arrow become the Green Arrow?

  • zippittyay

    And he can dribble?

How many did J.R. Hunter make? I`m just ready for the damn draft.None of the trade proposals I`ve seen appeal to me.

    • MJ

      Who is J.R. Hunter? 🙂

      • jrleftfoot

Maybe you can figure out who I meant if you try really hard. If not, I`ll throw out some hints.

        • MJ

Ok ok let me take a minute. Did you mean JR Giddens? I mean, it’s been years but that guy probably looked good in workouts. At least good enough for Danny to take him over Deandre Jordan. Was that who you meant?

          • jrleftfoot

yeah, that`s who I meant, Mother Jones— is being an asshole your profession , or just a hobby?

          • jrleftfoot

correcting other people`s typing , diction and spelling errors adds so much to the conversation—I`m pretty sure that anybody with an IQ over 50 would have realized that I was referring to R.J.Hunter , and I`m 100 % sure that anybody who wasn`t intent on showing how clever they are wouldn`t have responded with more adolescent smirk 7 hours later, but , hey , boys will be boys. carry on.

Ok. My mistake. I wasn’t trying to upset you. My intention was just to joke around with a fellow Celtics fan because I just assumed we were all amigos here. I’m sorry.

Everything aside, I completely agree with you. I really wish the draft would come by now because the suspense is killing me.

          • jrleftfoot

I have a tendency to overreact sometimes. This was one of them. My bad.

          • MJ

Trust me I’ve been in the same spot plenty of times. The thing about the internet is, it isn’t the same as interacting with someone face to face. You can’t tell if someone’s trying to mess with you or just piss you off hence why there’s riffs.

But seriously, can the draft just freaking happen now?!

The Sixers will take him and thus Ingram falls into our lap.

This is probably all Danny Ainge’s doing, this sudden media infatuation with Jamal Murray. He’s a great shooter — but a minus defender. Which makes him a liability to any team with championship aspirations. I think this year’s Finals has made it very clear: to beat a great team, you have to be great on BOTH sides of the floor. If you have a weakness on either side — like CLE’s problem on defense — you lose.

Murray’s too slow to EVER be a great defender at his position. Therefore, imo he’s a pass for the Celtics.
