The Houston Rockets fired Kevin McHale this morning.

McHale delivered the Rockets to the Western Conference Finals a year ago, but four straight blowout losses and a roster struggling to respond with effort pushed to the organization to make a move to salvage what had been expected to be a season of championship contention.

McHale signed a three-year contract extension a year ago and is owed approximately $12 million. He went 193-130 in four-plus seasons with the Rockets and is the winningest coach, by percentage, in franchise history.

Assistant coach J.B. Bickerstaff will take over as the interim head coach, with assistant Chris Finch ascending to associate head coach, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Read that first part again.

McHale helped lead them to the CONFERENCE FINALS a year ago… and now he’s out after 11 games because his players have absolutely quit on him. A team led by a childish clown (Dwight Howard) and a fame-seeker/Kardashian hanger-on (James Harden) has successfully led a mutiny on a coach who has the best winning percentage in team history.

Never forget that this is a player’s league, and if some element infects a locker room and the players decide they want a new coach, they can do it by simply slacking off.

The Rockets are, indeed, a horrible mess right now. They’ve gotten blown out often, they’ve lost to the Nets, and they spent a great deal of court time embarrassing themselves with a severe lack of effort. I don’t know the inner workings of that team, but it feels weird that McHale would suddenly lose this team after so much success in Houston.

Enjoy your downward spiral, Houston.

Kevin, you’re more than welcome to come back to Boston and teach Kelly Olynyk some footwork in the post.

Dwight did this to SVG too.

I’m inclined to blame this one more on Harden.

Confirmed: Kevin McHale to the Celtics. Will wear number 32 and come off the bench.

Made me think how much McHale owned the Rockets

As a player, Kevin was instrumental in getting us rings #14-16.
He is also 100% responsible for delivering our one and only ring since 1986, when he sent KG here.

Ainge owes McHale his entire “legacy” as an executive. McHale belongs in Boston, working in some capacity for the Celtics.

    Do the right thing, DA!

That’s like saying any GM that made a trade with the Red Sox prior to them winning the MLB championship is responsible for delivering those rings. C’mon get a grip on yourself. That is utterly ridiculous. You have every right to not be a DA fan but as I’ve said before, Danny is doing a fine job. The team is playing really well, and some super draft picks are coming over the next 3 years. The future looks quite bright!

You`ve got to be kidding. The Red Sox 25 man championship rosters were a combination of expensive free agents, draft picks, and trades compiled over time.
The Celtics were an irrelevant near-doormat for years. Suddenly, McHale sends KG to Boston, and immediately success arrives! Close your eyes and picture Ainge`s 12 year GM track record IF KG never arrived. Not very pretty, is it?

Yes, the Celts have been a pleasant early surprise…but, let`s not get too carried away.
They beat OKC without Kevin Durrant playing. They beat a Houston team that had quit on it`s coach, has lost 5 straight, including a loss to awful Brooklyn a few nights ago.

Guess what….Ainge has just confirmed that he has offered McHale a job! Good move, why not offer a job to the man who saved his?

Free agents , draft picks , trades:
          Ray Allen – trade
          Tony Allen – drafted
          Rajon Rondo – drafted
          Kendrick Perkins – drafted
          PJ Brown – free agent
          James Posey – free agent
          Glen Davis – drafted
          Leon Powe – drafted
          Eddie House – free agent
          And on and on:
Sorry but KG did not do it alone. You need to open your eyes and give Danny the credit that he deserves. And definitely not to Kevin McHale.

          • RedsLoveChild

            Please!
How much winning were they doing before KG arrived in `07….and how much winning have they been doing since Ainge “accidentally” blew up the team by trading Perk for Green in Feb, `11?

Mchale is a nice guy, soft guy not sure he is fit for coach who should talk hard sometimes.

  • Erik Willis

Id take Mchale as the C’s big mans coach 7 days a week 365 days a year!
