Celtics draft PG Terry Rozier with 16th pick (Who?)

Rozier

I couldn’t be more disappointed. Not only were the Celtics unable to move up in the draft (Jahlil Okafor went 3rd to Philly, Justise Winslow went 10th to Miami), but they drafted a defensive point guard.

Terry Rozier is 6-2, 190 sophmore out of Louisville. He can defend like hell, rebounds well, but struggles with the 3 point shot. Remind you of anyone else on this team?

The C’s passed on guys like Bobby Portis, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, Sam Dekker and Montrezl Harrell. There were many reports that Boston was trying to move up to Charlotte’s spot at #9 but a deal could not be made. I’d love to know Michael Jordan’s asking price for the pick because Justise Winslow is a helluva player.

Rozier was 23rd on Chad Ford’s big board:

Rozier has been terrific in workouts, but he’s started to get traction in the mid-to-late first round. He’s been on a roller coaster of a ride, rising into the late lottery after dominating in summer camps and then sliding after an up-and-down sophomore year at Louisville. Still teams see a lot of upside there. He could go as high as the Rockets at No. 18, then has the Mavs at No. 21, the Cavs at No. 24, the Lakers at No. 27 and the Celtics at No. 28 that will look at him.

Here’s reaction from others on the Red’s Army team:

Geoff: Rozier is a bit of a reach, imo. The backcourt will be really crowded. Smart, Thomas, Bradley, Turner, James Young and now Rozier. I would think Danny will move one of them

John: There’s no way this pick makes sense without a trade somehow involved. Teams must be asking for our guards, so he’s adding to the depth to accommodate the loss of one.

Jamey: Seriously? Please???

Mike D.: With Smart and IT, no one foresaw the drafting of a 6’2″ point guard. Does this set up a trade? When will the other shoe drop?

This clip sums up my reaction best:

Let’s see what happens with the 28th pick.

Please… Let there be more to this pick… Please…

    • Frank Aziza

There’s not. Just more of the same , another guard that can’t shoot but can play dee. The third one we drafted in five years. Two in a row actually

  • fannak

Just hopping there is a deal in place. I too was very sad to see Justice W. go to the heat. It did not look like Danny was going to go up and get a great shot -blocker, so I was hoping he would somehow get Winslow.

  • fannak

There just must be a trade in the works. We all waited too long for this day and we end up with another guard? Come on Danny spill the beans!

    • Frank Aziza

I’m getting sick of thinking there’s a trade coming. It never comes.

  • Shane

Interesting pick. Nothing against Rozier considering he is a tenacious defender and can score (17.1 ppg), but why so early? Seems like the consensus was he would be available later. That said, picks can’t be judged until down the road. Let’s see how this pans out…

  • MJ

Im so pissed off right now. This is the biggest what the fuck pick I’ve seen in Celtics history. Atleast when the Celtics selected Jajuan Johnson and Fab Melo, they drafted them based on need. What the hell do we need this guy for?! WE HAVE FOUR GUYS WHO PLAY HIS POSITION!

Please tell me there’s more to this. There has to be something going down. I hate this pick to death, and I always backed Danny Ainge on his picks. This is the absolute shittiest pick I’ve seen him make. And I know, “let’s wait to see what Rozier can do”, but how?! How is this guy going to get minutes?! If Ainge had picked him at 28 I would have thought okay fine not too bad. BUT AT 16?! What is going on?!

    • Frank Aziza

Not only do we have four guys that play his position but they play it exactly the same, CANT SHOOT!!! We have no shooter and no length. Look at what the Bucks do, they’re drafting so well. Even tonight they took a shooting guard with length.

  • fannak

It only make sense if Bradley or Smart will be moved. Maybe that’s why so early.

  • Frank Aziza

Danny hasn’t hit a home run in a long time. He’s building a team that’s gonna lose a lot of games by scores of 71-70.

  • fannak

Please let the be a woj-bomb saying we had Philly pick for us.

  • Frank Aziza

this rebuild is going on year 3 of 20.

    • forever_green

This is what I’ve been saying since the
      ” blow up”

    • Mike C

      So True!!

  • Herman Bubbert

Completely agree. Another guard who can’t shoot. This is another nail in the coffin for the Celtics Blah writers and their “Ainge is a draft savant” agenda. At some point, people are going to have to realize that Ainge isn’t a particularly good drafter, and these alleged “assets” we’ve accumulated haven’t been enough two years running to move the needle for this franchise.

Feel worst for Stevens. He’s not going to ride this treadmill forever. If I were him, I’d be furious tonight.

Duplication. Redundancy. Copies. Over and over.

  • Lee in Oregon

Danny adores point-guards who aren’t really point guards. Hopefully he proves everybody wrong.

  • fannak

The next guy we pick better be tall!

    • Mike C

Nope, more guards! Lets just get rid of every player over 6’4″!

  • fannak

    So much for that . . .

  • Lee in Oregon

RJ Hunter is a nice pick-up this late

    • forever_green

      Finally potential scoring, good pick.

  • Cal Cortez

All part of Danny’s master plan. Just wait until his starting 5 of PGs who can’t shoot win the trophy. You’ll see-then you will be thanking him for trading Paul Pierce. You’ll see!!…

Worst draft in Danny Ainge’s tenure. I honestly don’t even think was the best PG available if they were looking for a PG (WHICH THEY SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN!!!!) Delon Wright, and Jerian Grant WILL be better players. And Sam Dekker will be TWICE the player that any of those guys will be. BOOK IT!

    • fannak

I agree about Dekker, that’s who I wanted at that spot

  • Robert Hodgman

Picked 3 guards for a team that has 5 guards on it already.

    • Mike C

Ainge is no rocket scientist, that’s for sure. Are we just going to keep drafting guards for the next decade. How many times has this idiot done this. We’ve been out rebounded by every team in the league for two seasons now. “Hey Danny, you think maybe we should look into getting some rim protection at some point?”

  • Dmitry

I just got it! This all is done to match with Golden States small ball on defense! LMAO!

  • 76th

OK, now we should sign Rondo

“Once fans read about his fear of squirrels or his love of sugar-ranch spaghetti sandwiches, they might slowly embrace the guard.”
