Report: Celtics had exploratory talks for Nuggets Ty Lawson

Lawson

Grantland’s Zach Lowe has published an insightful trade deadline primer, in which he references the Celtics interest in Nuggets PG Ty Lawson:

The more interesting questions surround Ty Lawson and Kenneth Faried. Denver isn’t shopping those guys, but Jusuf Nurkic is the only true untouchable on the roster, per several league sources who have dealt with the Nuggets. The sense around the league is that you could land Lawson or Faried with a Godfather offer. They are gettable. Boston and Denver have had exploratory talks about Lawson, per several sources.

Lawson and Faried are also due a lot of future money in a league in which contracts are shorter than ever. Lawson will earn $12.4 million next season and $13.2 million in 2016-17. He’s an outstanding offensive player, and his shooting has rebounded after an icy start to this season. His ankle doesn’t appear to be bothering him much anymore. He’s something like the ninth-, 10th-, or 11th-best point guard in the league — a super-fast dynamo who can get into the lane at will, draw fouls, and dish a ton of dimes.

Exactly what is an offer Denver can’t refuse? Are we talking Marcus Thornton’s expiring contract and one or two 1st round picks? Because I don’t see Ainge going any further than that.

Lowe elaborates:

The C’s have a thousand draft picks, two big trade exceptions, and a bushel of interesting young guys. It’s unclear how interested they really are, and dealing for Lawson now would bring the risk of a semi-unwanted playoff appearance. Boston will not include Marcus Smart in any Lawson deal.

I’m also not including Jared Sullinger, Kelly Olynyk, James Young or Avery Bradley in any deal for Lawson.

I’m not opposed to bringing in a 3rd guard who would be the best offensive player in the backcourt, a la Goran Dragic. There will be enough minutes to share among Smart and Bradley.

Would you rather have Lawson for 2 years and $25 million or Dragic for 4 years and $80 million? Or neither?

It comes down to cost. Do we really want to move assets to enhance one of the stronger positions on this team?

Take Lawson and then try and sign Marc Gasol or trade for a star center then i think that would make this team respectable again enough with gathering assets i think nows the time you trade assets for a playoff run at this point we arent bad enough to get a top 5 pick and we aren’t good enough to do anything in the playoffs if we get there so make a move

Lawson alone doesn’t make us a contender. Larry Saunders is about to get bought out- I think this would be a much better gamble than the one DA took on Vin Baker.

    • Curt Hays

Agreed, and if having Rondo didn’t make is better, than how will Ty Lawson?

      • wil

well, lawson is just a flat out better player than Rondo since the injury? He can also score inside which Rondo was reluctant to do.

I think any pg we can get, isaiah thomas, or ty or dragic is an upgrade over rondo. Just gotta face the facts has been pretty bad.

  • Bring Brad Stevens Home

Larry Sanders would be a huge piece to the puzzle, if he can keep his head out of his ass.

Over to the trade machine I go…

    Would you do this?

  • Sean McLaughlin

One question: Why??? lol. Cuz I can’t find a good reason to sign Lawson.

  • Jake Gruber

We are banking on Smart being better than Lawson? Lawson is a second tier point guard. This means we are counting on Smart being a top 10 point guard, really. I think that’s a gamble. Lawson is very good and still only 27. It might actually increase the chances of landing a good free agent if the Celtics could bring in Lawson and get a decent big guy. Maybe not a big time free agent, but the tier below that. By then, Lawson would still be around 30 years old, with plenty of time left.

Lawson could be a great influence to the young guys and try to get in the paint and stop all the mid range jumpers. We can let him go after his contract ends, in 2 years smart should be fully capable to run point.

id give up 2 late first rounders and AB to get lawson back. lol
