We’re The Worst

It’s Time To Finally Admit It

I’m Matty G, and I am a fan of the worst team in the NBA…

It is real tough looking at the standings and seeing the Celtics dead last. Are they really the bottom of the barrel, the cellar dwellers, the team that can’t beat some college teams? For the first few times I saw the standings I was drunk off of thoughts of Greg Oden or Kevin Durant. But it actually hit me the other day that the Celtics really are the worst team in the NBA. What else can be said for a team that keeps losing, and losing, and losing? It is such a terrible title to own, painful for both the team and the fans. Unfortunately all that can be said is it’s true, and admitting it is the first step to getting help.

It was tough at first because really bad teams usually consist of guys with crazy names like Cherokee Parks and Bimbo Coles. The Celtics are a team that lost their star player for two months and had to depend on a bunch of kids. There was an excuse for them to be bad. Now the only problem is the star player is back, and although he isn’t at full speed, the team is still terrible. They turn the ball over way too much (16.3 per game, and 70 times in the last four games) and are extremely undisciplined. Yes they are young, but a young team can still be disciplined. And has anyone else, it doesn’t matter how much basketball experience or knowledge you have, thought to themselves that they could out-coach Doc Rivers? Maybe that was harsh, but it is pretty safe to say if the team wants to win soon, Doc can’t be around too much longer. I really like him and think he mixes well with the guys on the team, but he is probably the worst in-game coach in the NBA. So if their coach is the “worst” at something, it’s easier to see why the team is the “worst” where it matters.

If the Celtics really want to finish with the worst record it shouldn’t be too hard to do it. The Grizzlies are bad, but are they really that bad. They lost five of 22 games without Pau Gasol to start off the season and have gone 10-20 since his return. Still pretty bad, but it might not be bad enough. Plus Gasol is a pretty solid big man, and having one of those in this day usually guarantees some wins. The 76ers and Sonics would be next in line and are sad stories too. The fact the 76ers play in the Atlantic will help them (it should also help the Celtics, but they are the worst team in the league…) and do have some promise with the new AI -- Andre Iguodala. The Sonics are getting their number two guy in Rashard Lewis back and despite playing in the West have a fairly easy schedule left (Minus two run-ins with each the Lakers and Spurs). It may be painful to watch but the Celtics could very well claim their throne at the bottom of the bunch.

No one should think the Celtics are just going to tank the season. That goes against everything the Celtics are about. But with 27 games left and only 13 wins, does it even matter what their record ends up being? Sure the team is sick of losing, but it may be best for the future. What is so bad about losing now if it can pay off in two months? Just force the ball to Gerald Green and Al Jefferson with Pierce in the background for the rest of the season. Those are the two guys you want to grow. It won’t matter if they add a guy like Oden or Durant if Green and Jefferson still can’t play at the top of their game. Both have shown signs so far this season, so why not use the rest of it to help them progress more? Not to mention if the Celtics don’t get a top two pick and want to make a trade, either of those two guys could help them get a big name (or letters if you catch my drift. Fine, I meant KG).

So it is true, the Celtics really are the worst team in the NBA. It’s been a terrible season, from start to finish. Losing Red started it all off, and now with the passing of Dennis Johnson, Boston needs something to be happy about.  It’s just a shame it may have to come in May courtesy of a small plastic ball.
