Celtics “low-balled” Cleveland for Love

This report comes to you via Zach Lowe and NBC Sports:

Cleveland and Boston had trade talks for Love at the deadline, though they died with Boston offering a low-ball package the Cavs wouldn’t consider, according to several league sources.

NBC Sports adds this context:

Love could help them win now, Wiggins was years away, and LeBron wanted Love.

So let’s unpack this.

First of all, Cleveland wasn’t going to trade Love away for a bag of basketballs. On the other hand, there’s no way that Danny Ainge is going to call up David Griffin and lead with his best offer.

From that angle, this is a huge non-story. Ainge made a pitch for Love and Cleveland apparently didn’t want to make a counter-offer. Stuff like this happens all the time.

But there’s a more interesting angle to this. Does LeBron expect to be consulted on any trade involving Love? How would he react if Love was traded against his wishes?

As the article points out, LeBron practically demanded Kevin Love, and that resulted in Flip Saunders getting a much better deal for Love than he would’ve otherwise gotten (sans LeBron interference, the Celtics offer was probably the best Flip was going to get).

One cannot imagine that LeBron would have liked to find out that Olympic superfriend Kevin Love had been traded for some combination of picks and rotation players via twitter. It seems likely that he would see this as an assault on the leverage that he has been carefully assembling in order to be the league’s first de facto player/president of basketball operations.

If Love gets traded “out from under” Bron-Bron, LeBron will probably go start his own new team in Seattle and call it the “31ers”. No players under age 31 allowed.

      Or the Super Friends.

    Seattle sissys

      hahahahahahahahahahaha

Only because the Seattle athletes who are good but not good enough to win a championship without teaming up with everyone who makes 20 mil plus a year doesn’t quite fit on the front of a Jersey 😉

          ouch.

Does that mean that they need Ray Allen?

You gotta admit, they’d probably win a ring.

          CP3, Jesus, Wade, LBJ, Melo…

You know… GM Lebron can actually get his band of buddies to the Cavs (you know, the one he said he’d take a pay-cut for) through a series of trades:

    1. Straight-trade with the Clips for Kyrie and CP3. That might actually be beneficial to the Clippers;
    2. A three-way with C’s and Knicks. Love to Boston, Picks to the rebuilding Knicks and Melo to Cleveland; and
    3. Cleveland signs Wade as a free agent

Lebron/Wade/Melo/CP3 would easily be the most reviled team in NBA history. That’s a good core for the 2008 Olympics but probably an albatross in today’s NBA.

Can you imagine how much fun it would be to cheer against those guys though? And to BEAT them???

Although, I don’t want Kevin Love. Might as well go get David Lee back.

      • Eisenhorn1976

Yeah… you know, I’ve been having the same thought about Love! That’s kind of why I was excited about David Lee when the C’s first grabbed him. I thought he’d be a like Love without a 3-pointer and that maybe since Brad lets basically everyone shoot it from there, David would develop one.

It’s still annoying that he’s playing well for the Mavs. I know PER is a flawed stat but it really pissing me off to see him record a 26 PER in 18 games with them. What the hell, right?

          Banana Boat Buddies, lmfao.

Truth is, tall guys succeed under Carlisle. Look at Dwight Powell and Brendan Wright. Powell is sorta the (non-Dirk) fan favorite now after they lost Jaesus. I totally called that DLee would do well in Dallas though. Carlisle knows how to use his bigs. That’s why we ALWAYS lost to Carlisle. DLee will probably end up with the Knicks next year, so we can continue being pissed at him.

No way I’d send two first rounders–even low/mid 20s Celtics first rounders–to the Knicks for *this* Love.

Cleveland/LBJ really messed this dude up.

  • Curt Hays

They could get D’Angelo Russel pretty cheap right now!

Loves defense keeps getting exposed in cleveland. Now that they are struggling to fully utilize love they still expect to get as much as they traded for him lol They lowered loves value.

As good as love is, i dont think C’s are gonna take him if Cavs wants part of our core.
