Brace yourself for the most awfully awful Melo trade proposal

Let me preface this blog by saying I like Chris Sheridan. He’s covered the league for a long time and I trust/respect his reporting.

But… in his latest column he recommends the Knicks trade Carmelo Anthony. A fair point.

Sheridan offers two scenarios; Clippers and Celtics.

Here’s where we get nuts:

Wait, there’s more! In addition to Boston’s two best prospects, Sheridan throws in the Dallas and Memphis 1st round picks.

Four assets for a soon-to-be 32 year old player with cranky knees and $77 million remaining on his contract? I don’t think there’s a single C’s fan who would back this deal.

Are we overvaluing Smart and KO in this scenario?

I’m confused, was that trade for Melo and Porzingis right? Right?! …. That’s the worst trade I have ever seen. Speaking of Porzingis, I’d really like to have that guy. Olynyk plus the nets pick?

    • Astarot

No Nets pick until we know how high it is. KP is good and most likely will be very good and to throw Nets pick, not at this point

    • jrleftfoot

Porzingis looks fragile to me. Wouldn`t give up KO and Nets pick for him. He may be right around his ceiling already. Put Kelly on a bad team like the Knicks and watch him put up numbers.

  • NE_Celt

Not overvaluing them at all…this is just a plain horrible idea. Its more for what we get then the fact of giving away Smart and KO. If we could get a better player for that trade, I would be ok with it…but Melo…hell no.

Exactly what I said. Didn’t see this before I posted!

  • art

NO, NO, and more NO. That trade deadline can’t come soon enough.

  • Astarot

Can’t even put into words how bad it is. I assume he just threw it into Trader Machine it worked and he posted it on the blog with some comment. Come on, respected columnist should think at least twice before he made it public.

  • You’re spot on. This is legitimately the worst trade idea I could think of. I hate Carmelo’s game anyway, but then giving up two prospects so that we can get him makes me sick. He’s an aging, one dimensional, underachieving malcontent who destroys offenses. How exactly would this clown fit in a system premised on passing? He doesn’t pass. He takes horrible jump shots. He’s not Rudy Gay, but is he really that far off? This is horrible, horrible, horrible.

I’m studying for an important test I have in an hour. I promised myself I’d just skim through what’s on this site and not post anything- but this was so stupid I had to reply.

    Hell to the naw.

Lets just get Dwight Howard and Melo and have the biggest loser team I could possibly think of! No more trade scenarios involving Melo, Dwight, Blake PLEASE. Next thing you know we’ll be talking about trading for Deron Williams and I’ll have to hurt someone

These are guys I wouldn’t take if you gave them to me, never mind trading Smart or Kelly!

  • KGino

Remember when sports analysts said the Celtics wouldn’t make the playoffs and we all laughed and laughed and I said anyone who says that should be fired?? Good times.

  • Jake Gruber

I think there is definitely some overvaluing going on here, but I also wouldn’t make that trade. If Carmelo ever showed any sign of being a winner, I would give those guys up for a scorer like Carmelo easily. However he has just never showed an ability to play on a winning team, so for that reason I wouldn’t do it. Not because I think our guys are that good.

I’ve always been happy to see Melo hit his first 3 pointer. Unvariably, he will brick 5 of the next 6.

  • MatthewWilding

I’d do this for only one of those picks, Smart, Olynyk, and Lee.

I’d do this whole package and then some for Jabari Parker.

    • jrleftfoot

Smart and Olynyk are more valuable than Melo. Never mind the picks

      • MatthewWilding

You’re crazy. Smart is the poor man’s DWade when he hits his ceiling, and Olynyk is a top 20 big man at best.

        • Sean

I think you got Smarts value about right, but KO has the juice this year

        • jrleftfoot

Smart and Olynyk are more valuable , in the long run , than Melo , to this team , because Melo doesn`t fit the profile of the kind of team the Celts are constructing, and they have considerably less wear and tear on them. I won`t call you crazy , though, because that would be arrogant and rude.

This was just clickbait for Sheridan. Man’s gotta pay his bills…
