Your Morning Dump… Where the Celtics have signed MacGruber, er, McGruder

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big storyline. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.

The Boston Celtics today signed Rodney McGruder and Christian Watford to one year contracts. The levels of guarantee are not yet known, but are expected to be either nominal or nil.

Watford, a jumpshooting combo forward, attended summer league this year with both the Detroit Pistons and Golden State Warriors, averaging 8.5 points in two games for Detroit. He has spent the one year of his professional career thus far in Israel. McGruder meanwhile did not appear in summer league for anybody, yet last year spent some time with the Oklahoma City Thunder. The 6’4 off-guard is also only one year into a professional career, spending the bulk of his first campaign in Hungary with Atomeromu, averaging 14.4 points and 5.3 rebounds in 27 minutes a contest.

After signing Tim Frazier earlier in the day, the Celtics roster now stands at 20, the maximum permissible amount in the offseason. Evan Turner, reported to have agreed a deal with the team some weeks ago, has yet to sign it.

20 guys? I don’t quite see the point…

For those insatiable Celtics fans, here are some highlights of Rodney McGruder and additional info on Christian Watford. Rajon Rondo might not welcome Watford with open arms because of this.

There’s speculation that Evan Turner will formally sign once the Celtics make a decision with Keith Bogans. It’s possible Danny Ainge is holding his chips until the Kevin Love trade is official.

I wish we had room for Watford. He’s long and can shoot the 3. I’d like Danny to get more SF’s with size.

      Can we amnesty Gerald Wallace?

      • bill_nair

No, I believe he signed in the new CBA. Using the strech provision might be more likely next year but I think were stuck with Wallace for the remainder of his contract. Unless we can find a team to dump him on.

      • Curt Hays

Can we worry about hoping that Wallace will be amazing this year? 🙂

  • adam

    whatever. preaseason starting soon?

Exxxxactly. I think Da is bored and wants preseason too… Why else would he sign these guys.

      • bill_nair

Training camp roster is set at 20 bodies. Most teams do this. The last 2 or 3 players cut go to ME if they choose to go to the dleague. Its Dannys way of grabbing and keeping young players close to see there progress (assuming they decide to go to Maine).

Is it before noon where you are too?

  • Coach A. Johnson

This is just so Danny and Brad can have 4 full units during camp. 20 guys, 4 units. All get run. Late signees get a chance at going to Maine, and stay within the organization. It is possible the Red Claws will be getting as many as 6 of these guys. We all know that when given the right deal Danny will jettison Anthony, Bass, Wallace, and Thornton. Those guys are just on borrowed time, sorry to say.

    • bill_nair

That Red Claws team is going to be fun to watch this year, assuming 2 or 3 of the camp guys head up there.

      • Coach A. Johnson

I’m thinking Frazier, McGruder, Watford will be there all year, and added to that mix will be Young, Babb, and Johnson for a few stints before the trade deadline. It keeps them a phone call and train ride away when the moment is right.

Anthony and Wallace will bring nothing in return.

      • Coach A. Johnson

That we know I was talking in terms of opening roster spots for others. They are both elderstatesmen who bring nothing but energy. Both are being paid way too much.
