Your Morning Dump… Where Rondo is getting roped into the Josh Smith to Sacramento trade rumors

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big storyline. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.

The Detroit Pistons and the Sacramento Kings have resumed trade discussions on a deal that could send Josh Smith to Sacramento, according to sources with knowledge of the talks.

Sources told the Kings have continued to express interest in Smith and the parties are on the hunt for a third team that could help facilitate the deal.

As reported last month, Detroit and Sacramento have engaged in trade discussions that would potentially land Smith in the same frontcourt with DeMarcus Cousins and Rudy Gay. Initial talks called for Sacramento to send Jason Thompson and either Derrick Williams or Jason Terry to the Pistons for Smith, but those discussions reached an impasse and were pushed into July along with the rest of both teams’ free-agent business, sources said.

Another potential bonus is Smith’s close relationship with Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo, whom Sacramento has been targeting in trade talks for some time.

Is Sacramento attempting to build the most temperamental NBA team of all-time? DeMarcus Cousins, Josh Smith and Rajon Rondo?

I don’t know what the Kings are thinking. If they land Smith, there is no way they can afford to sign Rajon Rondo unless they let Rudy Gay walk in the off-season. I’m not a fan of building around Gay or Smith, but if I had to choose one to pair with Rondo and Cousins, it would be Gay.

DeMarcus Cousins is also a big fan of Rondo. In an interview with Bill Simmons, Cousins definitively claimed Rondo as the best point guard in the game.

On Page 2, the league’s proposal for gold tabbed jerseys.

Apologies for the blurry photo, it’s the only one I could find.

The NBA will use a single tab no matter how many championships the franchise has won. So a team like Portland with one championship will have the same number of tabs as the Celtics.

Since that’s not a fair representation, we propose the Celtics jersey look like this:

rondo gold 2

    Yay Rondo rumors.
I like Josh Smith so I hope he gets outta Detroit and goes back to playing the 4 full time. Oh and the gold tab will have the # of championships said franchise has won. Unnoticeable, but still some sort of recognition. I just hope they dont give the Lakers credit for the 5 they won in Minneapolis.

    • adam

They probably will. “Same team” as they say.

What’d DET sign Smith a year ago–and already they want to trade him? Is Rick Pitino back?!

The gold tab is stupid–unless like they did similar to what they did at the allstar game a couple of years back, when they had the No. of stars on the back for each year they were an allstar– I wouldn’t be totally opposed to that

Actually I think it was 2012 the last time KG was an allstar–they had each player wear warmup jackets with all lapels somewhat like military ribbons on the front acknowledging accomplishments: allstar game appearances, championships, MVP Defensive Player of the year etc. I remember KG had an awesome one and tried to buy one but the stupid NBA did not sell them for every player–only (wait for it) Lebron, Kobe and I think Melo…but I digress…

The gold tab says the # of championships the franchise has. Its stitched in gold so not that it means much but may be cool for anyone looking to purchase one. Luckily I have my celtics warmup jacket with all 17 banners, wont need one of these jerseys.

Those silly gold tabs are more of the soccer influence that Silver is so hyped about right now.

The same article talked about Boston getting a “pride” jersey like the Rip City and Motor City jerseys. What would Boston’s say? I doubt they would put Beantown on an NBA jersey.

    • bill_nair

If it doesnt have Beantown I think its going to be a corny cash grab. Boston Strong seems very likely. I do like we’ll be using the “BOSTON” road jerseys.

    • KWAPT

The “pride” jerseys just have alternate logos:

      • tvor03

I don’t think you’re correct. I believe this is simply a list of the new teams that will have pride jerseys, as well as which teams will have new alternate and new home and road jerseys. The ESPN article linked to the same picture but said the jerseys haven’t been shown yet. And it said they would be in line with Rip City and Motor City jerseys.

  • LA Flake

I’d be impressed with Silver when he actually proposes an idea that improves the game, not any of this silly marketing/sales-driven b u ll sh it.

    • adam

I could live with those 2 for Rondo. BUT If we are ditching Rondo, what about the AB signing the Celtics just did? I wonder what Rondo will command now that AB got 8 million.

  • Sam Jackson’s LC

As a Pistons fan, I endorse any plan to get Josh Smith out of Detroit, as long as it also means we dont bring Rondo in (folks in Detroit love the idea of Rondo. I dont like the reality of Rondo)
