C’s target Gordon Hayward might get max offer from Cavs

Chuck - Red's Army July 2, 2014 Rumors 23 Comments

There are multiple reports that the Cleveland Cavaliers are meeting with Utah UFA Gordon Hayward and preparing to make a hefty offer.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst says its a max offer:

What’s the max for Hayward, you ask?

Holy crap. That type of money makes Jeff Green look like a bargain.

Green and Hayward have similar stats (except for the fact that Green has plateaued and Hayward is on the rise).

If Green has a kick-ass season, he might be tempted to opt-out of the final year of his deal and seek a raise in free agency.

Jose3030 uncovered this gem from February. Hayward was asked to name his favorite and least favorite cities in the NBA:

Least favorite, I would say, like, especially since I’ve been in the league, probably Cleveland. Cleveland to me is like Gotham City. It’s, like, so dreary, and just, I don’t know, and then ever since LeBron [James] left, I mean, the fans, they’re starting to pick up a little bit more, but I remember my rookie year, there was hardly anybody there.

Ouch. He might have 63 million reasons to change his mind.

    Oh, Cleveland…

    Seriously, Cleveland… seriously…

as a city cleveland is not that bad. suburban areas like university heights, mayfield heights are pretty nice.

    • LA Flake

That’s like saying, “Man, that chick is butt ugly…But she got pretty feet!”

      • Bayern

the areas I visited in and around to Cleveland aren’t that bad. that is my point. It doesn’t take too much time to get to the arena from suburban areas which are nice.

    • Jester00

      you are reaching there

      • A.I.

nope Shaker, University Heights, Bedford, Seven Hills, Brooklyn Heights, Solon, Lakewood, Pepper Pike, Orange – Cleveland has many suburban areas and it takes no more than 30min to get to the arena from all these areas

  • Jester00

I live in Ohio been to Cleveland many times these 2 videos sum it up 2 mins total

      Hey Jester00!
      Did you bring us beer?

      • Jester00

        Of course and drank there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good. Let Cleveland overpay for GH. Another player that I don’t understand why Cs fans seem so in love with.

    • Curt Hays

Well Brad Stevens did say that Hayward was the best college player his senior season. Doesn’t mean a ton, but it isn’t insignificant. The kid CAN play. That doesn’t really answer your question though.

Something else, he was one of the top 10 tennis players in all of Indiana, in high school. For being 6’8″ that’s pretty awesome.

  • Dirk Diggler

I like watching him play, but realistically, Hayward is just a glorified guy who is slow and cannot play a lick of defense. Sully is slow and cannot play defense. Olynyk is slow and cannot play defense. At some point you would think the Celtics would pick up on this trend and realize as to why they have 1 championship in the last 25 years.

    • tvor03

Dwight Howard, Al Horford, Serge Ibaka, Joakim Noah, Marc Gasol, are all athletic and play great defense. How many championships do they have?

      • Dirk Diggler

I prefer speed/defense over slow footed offensive minded players who don’t play a lick of defense.

    • Hex Effect

1 championship in 25 years to total up to 17 championships, still more than every other team in the league. Also let’s not forget that losing two potential franchise players to death isn’t something that a team can recover quickly from. A lot of people knock on the Celtics for only winning one title since 86 but everybody knows that KG’s injury derailed us from possibly repeating and even winning one more. Injuries killed us after 2008 and Thibs’ departure to Chicago exposed Doc Rivers as nothing more than an average coach.

  • Thatguy

“This guy thinks we’re dreary and depressing, lets give him a max deal!”

  • RedsLoveChild

At best, Haywood is an average player.

One year after making the worst #1 selection in NBA draft history {Anthony Bennett}…Cleveland wants to make the worst max contract offer in FA history.

    • stevemb34

Sorry to interrupt Redslovechild but Rashard Lewis would like a word with you.

      • Curt Hays

        Rashard got a max contract???

      • RedsLoveChild

        Yeah….That was a bad one!

  • KGino

And you guys thought the AB contract was crazy… Market is inflating friends

  • Lee in Oregon

GH is a nice player but nowhere near a max-guy. If DA or any-other GM wants to make a splash, they could swoop in and scoop Stephenson from the Pacers. The right coach could reel the kid in a bit and then you’d have a good young player at not crazy money. (50 mil/5 years?)
