Rumor: Rajon Rondo has asked for $100 million

WEEI’s Ben Rohrbach has transcribed a rumor that Cedric Maxwell revealed on Yahoo Sports Radio:

“I think it basically gives you an indicator of what the Celtics want to do,”Maxwell told Yahoo Sports Radio. “Rumor has it that Rondo has asked for a $100 million extension. You’ve got Smart, the young kid, and you’ve got Young, the other kid from Kentucky — both guards. And in the NBA system right now, the way they’re being paid, you would pay both those guys probably about $4 million for one year instead of the $100 million right now that Rondo wanted to ask for.

“So, if you’re Rondo, you might want to start calling that moving company and say, ‘Eh, come get my stuff. I don’t think I’m going to be here too long.’”

As Ben writes, Rajon is not eligible for the 5 year, $104 million contract until summer 2015. If he plays out his current contract in Boston, teams around the league will only be able to offer a max of 4 years, $85 million. If Rajon is traded, his new team retains the right to offer him the most money.

I wouldn’t give Rondo a 5 year, $100 million contract. I put his annual worth at $15 – $17 million.

(Props to Ben for first reporting this and answering my questions on Twitter)

I honestly think he should receive a comparable contract to Tony Parker. A fair value is 4 yrs / $60-65 million.

    • reggie lewis

But even if you pay him that, Rondo is now in the way of developing our young talent. Having him on our roster may make some fans happy, but it would be at the expense of the overall health of our rebuild.
And Parker, Duncan and Ginobili all make less than their peers. They do so they can spread money around to sign better role players for their playoff runs. The Celtics, unfortunately, dont have that problem.

      • bill_nair

How is he in the way of devlopment? He doesnt look to score, only assist. You would think that helps these young guys get theres but what do I know.

        • CFH

Yeah, I wouldn’t hand him $100 million but he’s not in anyone’s way as of now. Last year by all accounts he would sit with Pressey after the games and talk point guard things. (Bonus: he went with Pressey to the Bruins game and explained that too!)

If he treats a more threatening young guard like Smart differently, then yes, he’s in the way. But all we’ve seen so far is good mentoring of younger players, especially those at his own position.

          • eddysamson

You could really see Rondo’s influence on Pressey grow as the season went on.

    • LA Flake

$12 million to start and maxing out at $16 million in the final year would be my best offer.

    • bill_nair

Yup anything more than $15 mill anually is crazy. And even that may be a bit much.

    • adam

In the Age of the Salary cap, I could never understand why a player would want a max deal (north of 20 mill). I understand you want to be paid a good amount of money. I am not saying they shouldn’t make good money. But the more the one player takes, the harder it is to fill the roster with talent. I think the Spurs are doing it right http://hoopshype.com/salaries/san_antonio.htm

Rajon is making 13 million next year. I can see paying him 14/15 max.

According to hoops hype we are at 43 million? http://hoopshype.com/salaries/boston.htm

      • eddysamson

        Manu + Timmy D + Parker’s salaries COMBINE FOR LESS THAN KOBE’S.

        • Brick James

That’s really an amazing stat. I mean it.
But who has more rings, Kobe or Duncan? :D

Both philosophies work — it all depends on the circumstances.

(I would not give Rondo 20M)

    • CoachAJ

I’d say so too, but remember that most contracts rise so his final year will be something like 17mil if he starts at 14mil. But what is 1mil more for your star player.

  • Thatguy

I hope this isn’t true. I really think the Celtics would let him go in free agency because of that. (Like an earlier article suggested)

    • LA Flake

If he’s demanding $100 million, they should let him go in a trade. Rondo is not a max player.

This explains why we drafted Marcus Smart.

      • Herman Bubbert

Rondo’s nuts. NO chance he gets that kind of bank. Anywhere.

Let him walk. I’ll take the cap room.

        • LA Flake

I’ll take a dead weight or two as long as they come with unconditional draft picks from bad teams.

          • Herman Bubbert

There’s a guy named Bball Tim who doesn’t know squat over on Celtics Blog who will slit his wrists over this. Biggest uninformed Rondo homer on the planet.

          • LA Flake

            I’m a farmer’s market/mom&pop store kinda guy, not a Walmart patron. So I wouldn’t know or care.

          • Brandon

I haven’t commented in a while here. I agree with your point Herman, but let’s keep this discussion respectful – which means, no trivializing or joking about self-harm, which is an extremely serious health issue.

Other than that, I’d take the cap room too.

          • Herman Bubbert

You take everything literally, pal, then you need to work on reading comprehension. It’;s called a figure of speech. Ever heard of it?
Although, some of you nuts are so into Rondo I wouldn’t put anything stupid past you if your binky wanders off.
Try to stay with the conversation, ummkay?

  • bill_nair

There isnt any point guard in the league worth this (and maybe only 3 players). I dont think Rondo does drugs but who knows.

  • CoachAJ

Rumor, rumor, rumor. I am sure he would not ask for cash like that coming off of injury and playing only half of the games scheduled. C’mon. I can not believe this one. Until I hear him or his agent say it.

    • bill_nair

Rumor has it were getting Love……you’d think Celtics fans would learn to ignore these by now.

      • Thatguy

I think it’s a mixture of boredom and lack of other things to talk about.

        • bill_nair

I cant wait for summer leageu to start.

          • Thatguy

            You and me both, man.

          • eddysamson

            Its SO CLOSE

    • Kevin

You’d be surprised what figures agents will fill their clients’ heads with these days.

    • forever_green

      Yup, what coach said AJ.

    • CoachAJ

Avery got his 8per year, so Rondo IF Danny moves forward with Rondo as the leader, will get 15-16 per year for 4 years = around 60 million.

  • Rich Jensen

I don’t put a lot of stock in this. The Celtics can’t give Rondo a $100M contract for another year and a day. I doubt very much that Rondo–or his agent–are stupid enough to begin agitating for a max deal over a year before he’s eligible for it.

    • bill_nair

Wouldnt his agent want the most money, so leveraging a deal now hurts his value, correct? What team will trade for him if hes only staying for $100m? At that point he walks to free agency and gets market value (which is what will hapen anyways, so i cant imagine his agent leaking this rumor.)

      • Rich Jensen

That’s the way I see it. He can’t sign a $100M contract now–or tomorrow, so there’s not much opportunity for leverage here.

  • wil

Problem with Rondo is invaluable in the Playoffs but sucks big time in the regular season. Lets hope this is just a Rumor, id put his value 14-16 mil

For a math guy, Rondo sure is good at ignoring his regular Season stats.

  • KGino

If WE can all agree that Rondo is worth 13-17mil a year, I’m sure the league execs see it that way too… Its just a matter of if someone is desperate enough to overpay him. Point guard is easily the most abundant position in the league right now (Rondo, DRose, Curry, Parker, Westbrook, CP3, Irving, Lillard, Holiday, Rubio, Isiah Thomas, Eric Bledsoe, Dragic, Teague, Lawson… and that’s just off the top of my head)

    • LA Flake

If WE can all agree that Rondo is worth 13-17mil a year, I’m sure the league execs (a lot of them) will offer him double that.

      There. Corrected for you.

  • reggie lewis

Rondo isnt going to get paid like K Irving. Not like Lowery is about to be. Not like Westbrook is. Not like E Bledsoe will be. ect. Why??? Because his game isnt as complete as those players. His skills are unique and impact the game, but not like a PG who is a threat to score + pass and essentially make the game winning shot would be. Rondo fans will disagree. Thats fine. But the market for Rondo will show how teams value him.
The only people in the nation that think Rondo is an irreplaceable and crucial part of a championship caliber team is celtic fans. The rest of the league isnt buying it.
I may be wrong. But his potential suitors (or lack of) and his next contract will tell us definitively what the league perceives as his true value.
But I obviously agree with most here…you cant pay him anything close to a max if your in a rebuild mode. And even teams making a run at the title wont want to pay him that amount.

    • Herman Bubbert

The poor simpletons who slobber Rondo’s knob incessantly, like BBall Tim, aren’t going to like the league’s value of the guy whose posters they have plastered all over their bedroom walls.

  • LA Flake

Here’s whom the C’s should target this Summer:
Get Greg Monroe for Jeff Green and fillers.
Sign Gordon Hayward for Jeff Green money if possible.
And convince Rondo to take a home town discount like PP and KG have done.

This will give us a solid foundation of Rondo, Monroe and Gordon with Sully, Smart and the rest. Monroe and Sully will control the boards, Rondo controls the pace and Gordon becomes our closer. I like this team if Danny can put it together. It can definitely contend in the East.

    • bill_nair

I know some aren’t that high on Jeff but it’s a little unfair to trade him twice.

      • LA Flake

I like him. I’ve always rooted for him, too, when everyone was down on him. I’d just like to get Monroe on the C’s somehow. He and Rondo could become a magical duo.

        • bill_nair

Lol I’m just pointing out how you put Green down for both trades.

          • Alex Costa

You might want to re-read what he wrote.

          • bill_nair

Aaaah your right. I looked it over like 10x and still hadnt realized it haha thanks.

      • eddysamson

I feel like Green would be a solid player with someone like Love and a Harden-type scorer on the team. He’s not a #1 or #2 though.
