Your Morning Dump… Where a failed Love pursuit could cost us Rondo

John - Red's Army (@RedsArmy_John) June 20, 2014 The Morning Dump 44 Comments

biggie rumor

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big storyline. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.

If the Celtics cannot get Love, they are planning to continue with the longer and more methodical rebuilding process, a process that would likely see Rajon Rondo traded. (An NBA source said they would also have a taker for Jeff Green if they chose to move him.)

[…] So far, according to a source, they have offered the Nos. 6 and 17 picks in this year’s draft, Kelly Olynyk and one of their own future No. 1 picks. They also own two more first-rounders from the Nets and one from the Clippers after this season, and the Celts are said to be certainly willing to discuss different combinations of their assets.

Herald: Celtics waiting game is a labor of Love

First of all, there is zero doubt in my mind that however this ends up, Minnesota is going to get the worst of it.  I’m already calling Minnesota the loser in the whatever Keven Love trade materializes.

Secondly, I fail to see the merits of further extending the rebuild by trading Rondo away unless it nets the Celtics a star at a different position and more future assets.  In my opinion, making Rondo available should get teams to react the same way as they’re reacting to Kevin Love’s availability.  Considering Rondo’s very consistent public stance (which he continued yesterday on ESPN) of wanting to stay and lead this team to another title, I’d say this “likely” scenario isn’t as likely as presented.  I’m on board with Rondo trade scenarios that make sense, but I haven’t heard one since the Chris Paul pursuit a few years ago.

As for the offer…

I’d be psyched if the Celtics could keep Sullinger.  They’d certainly bet a pretty good rebounding team if that happened. I like the scenario in which the Celtics trade for Love without giving up Sullinger, use the TPE acquired from the Paul Pierce deal to get Omer Asik, and bring Sully off the bench.  That may not be very likely, though.

This really all hinges on what kind of deal Minnesota will want.  If they want the best player, they’ll figure something out with Golden State.  If they want the best package of picks, Love will be a Celtic.

Of course, we’re focusing on reports and sources.  Don’t be shocked if Phoenix swoops in with a package out of the blue and steals Love away.  Very often, it’s the team no one is talking about that’s quietly getting the best deal done behind the scenes.

Page 2:  Pat Riley gives an epic press conference

Love him or hate him, Pat Riley’s news conference yesterday in the wake of Miami’s loss was flat-out awesome.  You can watch this whole half hour, or if you’re busy, just watch the first seven minutes.  Fair warning, if you stop at seven minutes, you’ll miss the Flashdance, Johnny Walker Blue, and James Ingram references.

Look… I’m no fan of Riles at all.  He’s been behind my two least favorite teams ever.  But this news conference was just spectacular.

And Finally….

hornets jerseys

These are the new Hornets jerseys.  For those who don’t know, Charlotte went back to being the Hornets this year.  I like these… nice, clean, simple…. well done.

I like the new Charlotte uniforms.

  • chuckmckenney

Stunned that the Celtics haven’t included Sullinger in the Love offer. Maybe that’s why Flip is playing games in the media. Time to step up Danny.

    • Jaedre

If Danny can get Love without giving up Sullinger lol he deserves an award and Flip should be banned from the league lmfao

      • eddysamson

I dunno, Sully is that consistent double double kind of guy whereas Kelly is that who the F knows what is ceiling is kind of guy. His rookie season stats were better than Dirk’s playing the exact same amount of minutes including higher FG and 3pt %’s. Sully’s floor is higher, Kelly’s ceiling has the potential to be much higher IMO. Minny said they wan’t a young potential superstar, I think thats Kelly.

        • Jaedre

yea i see what your saying

    • Curt Hays

I was just thinking that it’s nice to see hat Danny might be keeping his word with Sully’s dad. He DID tell him that he’s pursuing a center to put with Sully. But I’d hate to see Kelly go.

  • swissflix

As an art teacher i have to say the Hornets’ uniforms suck. At least the road uniforms. Blue and violett together? That’s two very similar colors sharing a fair amount of blue. Not enough contrast for my taste.

    • tvor03

Picasso’s blue period is considered some of his best.

      • Curt Hays

        lmao

      • swissflix

Now cubist uniforms, that would be awesome!

    • eddysamson

You do realize that like literally every good combination of colors has been done already right? As soon as I saw it I liked it because it was a combo you’ve never seen on the court. The home jerseys are especially good. Will admit the purple based one is a bit off though.

      • swissflix

right, but….does it make this one good? I like the home jerseys as well.

        • KGino

Is anyone else colorblind besides me? Shades of blue are not my strong suit

          • Curt Hays

Blue suits are for IBM employees anyway

  • Luke Walton

the gordon gekko of the nba

  • bill_nair

I like the Hornets jerseys. Im going to constantly confuse myself this year and think Anthony Davis is in Charlotte.
Id hate to see Rondo go but he may not want any part of a rebuild. Hopefully we get a good deal out of it. I still think the Minny situation is just all smoke right now. We’re definitley not out of it. The only people who claim we dont have a good package is Minny and Thompsons dad/Bucher.

  • RedsLoveChild

Flip, forget GS….there`s nothing “lovely” about the “Love-Lee” trade.

Do the right thing, get on with your life…send Love to “The Bean”, be done with it!

    • LA Flake

I’d love to get Love but with Embiid’s situation, I’m not willing to give up our 6th pick. It’d be a dream scenario to land Embiid ANNNND get Love. Oh, man…

      • RedsLoveChild

        All true.

Not to mention what you pointed out yesterday…the thought of a demented/senile/loose cannon Donald Sterling causing all sorts of chaotic drama next year, when we own their 1st round pick.

  • Luke Walton

this s**t is hard. you got to stick with it. If you have the guts. What else does anyone need to know about anything?

  • Curt Hays

Let me be the first to remind you all of your willingness to let Rondo go when about half way through the season we are all amazed at how bad ass he is. I sure hope I’m right.

    • BillRussell

Realistically Curt, whats our chance of getting Embiid? potential trade up maybe? i really really wish we could get him, i don’t want to get my hopes up though, being a celtics fan takes years off your life- lol

      • Curt Hays

Haha, it does certainly take years off. But it ain’t the years, it’s the miles. The Celtics will take you places that other teams never can.

Chances? @jerrysondler:disqus or @rRich Jensen are probably much more likely to give a good answer.

My guess? He’s still going high up. I think Randle will still go high. I think it depends on Cleveland and Utah. I don’t think the other teams will go for Embiid at this point. So, depending on Cleveland, one of the two may still be available for us.

Based on what I’m reading though, Air Gordon is still high on our list because his minimum contribution should still be enough to play in the NBA. He’s also not a head case, so Brad Stevens may want to work with him.

        • RedsLoveChild

Embiid dropping past ORL, then UTAH…straight into our laps?

Sorry, I just don`t see that happening.

          • Curt Hays

You really think Orlando will go after him though? I was thinking they might be hesitant to go after another injured big. Maybe they want to recreate the Dwight days. It makes sense that they’d want to get a new franchise player. They need some jersey sales.

          • bill_nair

Its possible. I dont think Utah takes him since they have Favors and want a prospect that can actually contribute this year. Orlando could take him but I think they really prefer a PG. And after the whole Dwight drama might be best to avoid centers for a little bit. I still dont think Embiid slips out the top 3 but if he does I think hes gonna slide.

          • RedsLoveChild

I have to assume that those teams see what we see when we see Embiid….he`s way too tempting to pass up.

          • LA Flake

If any team ahead of us takes Embiid, it will be Orlando. But I don’t think they’ll pass up Exum if he’s available and even if he wasn’t, I think they take Smart, Randle or Vonleh. No need to gamble on an injured big guy when they already have Vucevic.

          • RedsLoveChild

I love the enthusiasm, but…be careful what you wish for.

Embiid had 2 screws inserted in the navicular bone in his right foot today.

          • LA Flake

Why you trying to ruin my day, RLC?

          • RedsLoveChild

I hope like hell I`m wrong and you`re right!

  • BillRussell

Realistically guys, whats our chance of getting Embiid? potential trade up maybe? i really really wish we could get him, i don’t want to get my hopes up though.

    • bill_nair

I think trading up will be useless unless Philly or Orlando really want Smart or Randle. Our best bet is him falling to #6 which I think is more likely.

      • LA Flake

Embiid will fall to our laps. Just be patient. Ain’t no way the top three teams pick him now with his fractured foot. That’s just way too big of a gamble for them. But picking him up at 6 is totally sensible. Low risk, HIIIIIIGH reward.

  • CFH

Even with all the posturing going on, it wouldn’t shock me if the Wolves for real prefer Kelly to Sully. Kelly was the guy that by most accounts they wanted to draft last year, and he’s done basically what he was expected to do. Sully meanwhile has red flags (the back, the arrest, and of course the weight) that are easier to ignore when you watch him working night in and night out, listening to his dad, and all the rest.

I like the new Hornets uniforms but I’m not gonna act like I wasn’t hoping for them to bring the pinstripes back

  • LA Flake

How Embiid Will Land in Boston: My Mock Draft

    1. Cleveland can’t screw this up. Can’t/won’t gamble on an injured player with the top pick. They take Parker or Wiggins.

    2. Milwaukee already has Sanders and Pachulia. No need for a center. They’ll take Parker or Wiggins.

    3. Philly took Nerlens Noel last year who was also injured. Will not repeat and instead take Randle or Vonleh here.

    4. Orlando has Vucevic. They’ll take Vonleh or Randle. May take Exum or Smart to pair with Oladipo.

    5. Utah let Big Al and Paul Milsap go so they can develop Favors and Kanter. No need for an injured center. They’ll take Exum or Smart.

    6. With the sixth pick in the NBA draft, the Boston Celtics select Jo-El Embiiiiiiid!!!!

    • CFH

That’s plausible. Amazing how many ways this could go.

      • LA Flake

All that matters is that Joel Embiid will be wearing green as long as Danny doesn’t trade the pick.

    • bill_nair

Ya I dont really see why Utah or Orlando take the risk when they have starting centers and would prefer adding to positions of need that can contribute right away. Ive thought Randle to Philly was a good pairing since March. Noel and Randle frontline should be fun.

      • LA Flake

Randle, Vonleh and Smart are all being downplayed right now which means somebody will take one, two or all of them in the top 5. Throw Exum in the mix and we’re guaranteed to end up with a blue chip player who just a week ago didn’t seem attainable.

        Joel Embiid…Joel Embiid…Joel Embiid…
