Your Morning Dump… Why you should care about the Rockets move with Chandler Parsons

Parsons

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big storyline. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.

For the Rockets, there are two distinct advantages to letting Parsons into restricted free agency now. First, Houston is determined to clear the necessary salary cap space this summer to chase a third maximum contract free agent to join Dwight Howard and James Harden, league sources tell Yahoo Sports.

Houston plans to pursue the major stars who could be available upon opting out of deals, including Miami’s LeBron James and Chris Bosh, and New York’s Carmelo Anthony, league sources said. Dallas’ Dirk Nowitzki is expected to be a target too.

The Rockets are pursuing Minnesota’s Kevin Love in trade talks too, and Parsons could hold sign-and-trade possibilities.

In one scenario, Houston could secure three max-out players – including Howard, Harden and a potential star free agent – and then re-sign Parsons to an extension below the max-level range. Parsons could command in the $12 million to $13 million annual range, league executives tell Yahoo Sports.

Celtics fans should be familiar with Chandler Parsons because he’s been mentioned in past trade talks with the C’s. There was this doozy involving Rajon Rondo and Omer Asik back in February.

Parsons is close to being the “high-ceiling” player Minnesota covets, and the Celtics allegedly lack to offer in any deal. So we should be concerned that his name is linked to any deal involving Kevin Love.

I think Houston has one move: Carmelo Anthony. I don’t see LeBron leaving Miami and I’m convinced Love is landing in Boston.

Here’s a sobering reminder for Wolves fans dreaming up a rich trade bounty for Love; a 28-year-old Charles Barkley was dealt for Jeff Hornacek, Andrew Lang and Tim Perry in 1992. Barkley talks about Kevin Love’s situation here.

On Page 2, the Celtics notorious workout known as the Boston Marathon.

Back then, Ainge said Suns players would line up along the baseline of the 94-foot court and sprint to the opposing baseline and back again as much as possible during a three-minute span.

When he became the Suns coach in 1996, Ainge used the drill to close predraft workouts. Then when Ainge became the Celtics’ president of basketball operations in 2003, he brought that drill with him to Boston.

It has since become a staple of Celtics’ predraft workouts — so well known by players and agents around the NBA it has been called, simply, “The Boston Marathon.”

Danny Ainge said the drill is more revealing than one might expect.

“First of all, it shows what kind of condition you’re in, which I think is important,’’ he said. “Second, it shows just how willing a person is to push themselves.

“Even if they don’t get a great conditioning number, you can tell when people are fighting through or when they’re giving in. Those are the most important elements of that.”

Busting your ass for 3 minutes to prove you’re worthy of playing for the greatest franchise in NBA history? I think I’d go all out.

Former Northeastern guard Jonathan Lee holds the Celtics record with 29.5 court lengths in 3 minutes. That’s a number I can’t comprehend.

I’m not sure how many I can run, but I know it’s at least one more than John. Hmmm… this sounds like a good idea for a Red’s Army team challenge.

I guess you just didn’t read the part where he reacts to what was written? Perhaps you’ve never reflected on an article, book, or blog post…Oh wait you’re doing that right now.

Jonathan Lee is the record holder? I guess that tells us how well the drill translates into something meaningful…

Seriously surprised you guys aren’t covering this this morning:

We think its a garbage rumor. The source is not legit.

      Rondo, KLove & Melo???
As my teenage daughter would say, “No. Just. No.”

        I admire your courage!!

        • LA Flake

We don’t live in WeHo anymore. I know what you mean though. LA is a tough place to raise kids with gruesome, provocative and raunchy billboards/posters everywhere.

      • eddysamson

Honestly think Rondo + Klove + Green is better.

  • bill_nair

I link Parsons but no way is he worth that.

  • KGino

Would rather have parsons than melo

    • eddysamson

TBH I think I would too. I don’t see Melo meshing with that many other stars not to mention Stevens. Stevens is probably too young and inexperienced for Melo to take seriously. Melo would have to change his game pretty significantly to play aside Rondo + Love and that would come from Stevens pushing that, would Melo listen?

      • KGino

Yea, just think about how much Rondo & Melo have the ball in their hands. Melo would need to seriously develop his off the ball game to play with Rondo. Especially if we had Love too… The ball could not stick like melo’s made it stick on every other team he’s ever played for. And that’s not even mentioning how porous our defense would be.

        • eddysamson

If we acquire Love somehow it makes way more sense to get Asik and a sign+trade Parsons, that one team has 2 guys we could use. Then again do we want Parsons more than Green? Green could come on with Love taking some pressure away.

          • KGino

I’d take Parsons over Green, yes. Feel like he’s a better 3 ball shooter that would work better with Rondo

          • LA Flake

With Love and Rondo on the team, I think Green would be a better fit because of his versatility.

          • frickenWaaaltah

I think Green would be a better fit because I don’t want to puke every time I see Melo in a Celtics uniform but…

Fortunately, I don’t think we’ll need to examine the possibilities much more than that because I’m guessing Melo will stay in New Yawk and play in the triangle for Phil Jackson.

He already loves it there; he’d be a fool to leave now that they just got Phil. Didn’t Melo say that even just bringing one championship to the Knicks would be worth it because it would mean so much to the franchise and the city? If he sticks with them, he’ll get his chance at some point; if he leaves now he’s a hopeless db forever.

29.5 court lengths x 94 feet is a little over half a mile. 1/4 mile in 1.5 minutes would normally not be all that fast except this is a shuttle run with all the starting and stopping. I would guess Johnathan Lee was in shape enough to run a sub 6-minute mile, maybe more like 5 and a half.

  • frickenWaaaltah

To get cap space for a major free agent signing the Houston Rockets would have to trade both Asik AND Lin without taking any salary back. They BOTH have insane back-loaded contracts where they make ~14.9 mil next season. So ditching the first guy gets them approximately to the cap, and ditching the second guy gets them ~14 under.

Ditching Lin AND Asik for nothing in return sounds far fetched to me. They’d have to find TWO teams with cap space enough to absorb the entire salary and willing to take these guys for a mix of draft picks, cash, and/or nothing. Nothing is the most realistic expectation for Houston because each guy is going to be way overpaid and on a one year contract. Even if they sign reasonable extensions as part of a deal, Houston should expect to have to just give these guys away if they want to get things done because of how crazy overpaid they are for 2014-2015.

Is the next great Celtics team a true ensemble team? By which I mean, there is no one obvious primary go-to player down the stretch in close games who you’d always be looking for first every single night, but somehow they can still get it done?

    • bill_nair

That’s my worry with this team. Love himself isn’t enough to carry the offense. Big men are essentially role players in this modern day NBA. We’d need a dynamic wing to win it all.

So if we do go far with this team we’d need to be a true “ensemble team”. Fortunately we would have Love to shoulder some of the offensive load.
