Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix has the Celtics selecting Kentucky’s Julius Randle with the 5th pick in the draft.

5. Boston Celtics — Julius Randle, PF, Kentucky

Boston has two young power forward prospects in Jared Sullinger and Kelly Olynyk, but Randle’s potential could be too much to pass up. Randle possesses a diverse offensive repertoire. He can score inside and out, drawing comparisons ranging from Zach Randolph to Michael Beasley. The Celtics figure to be active in trade talks this summer, so increasing the team’s frontcourt depth should not be an issue.

The mere mention of Michael Beasley sends me into shock. I get that Randle has potential, but if the Celtics have to move a big, I want Sullinger to stick around.

I posed the question to Mannix and he responded:

If the end game is Kevin Love, I’m willing to part with either Sullinger or the #5 pick.

Speaking of Randle, he’s expected to announce this afternoon that he’ll be entering the NBA draft.

Okay, so I know the draft is not in April. However…

I almost had a heart attack when this email came across. For a brief moment, I thought the Celtics really got Randle. Thanks, Chuck. If I have to go to the ER, I’m sending you the bill.

    • chuckmckenney

Did you not see the word ‘mock’ in the title???

      • Curt Hays

Haha, sure did, but my heart was telling my brain to ignore it.

  • Curt Hays

I love Kelly Olynyk. Other than Rondo, he’s my favorite Celtic. But Sullinger should be a mainstay. We should not part with Sully.

    • LA Flake

Agreed. Sully plays like a true Celtic. He should stay.

    • jrleftfoot

I like Sully too, but Randle seems every bit as talented , in better shape , and no back issues . I`d rather have Embid, Parker or Wiggins , though .Who knows until the ping pong balls settle ? The Aussie point guard might be the guy . I think he`s 6`9 and canplay off the ball.

      • Curt Hays

The one thing that Randle is NOT — proven. Sully is proven against them all. We know what we get from him. Risk is an important factor.

        • celticbleedgreenusa

          sully has proven nothing

          • celticbleedgreenusa

except poor shot selection, poor conditioning, 42% fgp (after the all star game it was far worse) and he beats his wife.

      • celticbleedgreenusa

        sully = isaac austin

    • adam

I like what I read about Randle. Do you think he could play Small Forward at all?

  • RedsLoveChild

If Randle is available at #5…you draft him!

There`s a lot to like about Sully…but, his inner desire to maximize his full potential is very questionable. Unless he slims down and focuses on conditioning, he`ll have a short, injury plagued career.

At only 22, he already lumbers up the court like he`s 35.

    • LA Flake

I like Randle, too. He’ll be a very nice consolation prize if we don’t get Jabari/Wiggins/Embiid. And there are other intriguing prospects like Dante Exum and Marcus Smart that we’ll have a shot at getting.

      • celticbleedgreenusa

explain to me how Embiid will guard Zach Randolph, Dwight Howard, Aldridge, Big Al, Greg Monroe, Andre Drummond, etc…??? He is crap and a health scare. Jabari is a duke tease – nothing special translated to nba. Wiggins is not even T-mac in potential… best thing for us if we cant swing a deal is to get the 5 pick and take randle. no way ainge takes aaron gordon. he traded a big man that cant shoot already for a versitile winger (perk for jeff green)

        • LA Flake

I don’t know much about Embiid or Wiggins other than what I’ve read/seen on the Net but I have seen Parker play and I believe he’s going to be a stud.

          • celticbleedgreenusa

You’ve seen Parker play in the Duke System, not an NBA Ready System like Kentucky

          • svc359

ya, because the Plumlees and Kyrie Irving are all terrible bball players. Yes, Duke has had some flops (Austin Rivers), but every school/draft has flops. The system at Duke shouldn’t affect Parker too much. It’s not like it was for Fab Melo, who played center in the zone at Cuse, and it screwed him over for the NBA. Parker is a stud, and I think it’ll translate to the NBA

          • celticbleedgreenusa

plumlee is a bench player. kyrie is inconsistent. fab melo wasn’t even a basketball player to be honest and is not a fair comparison. ‘duke had some flops’ more than some: jay williams, danny ferry, christian laettner, shane battier, austin rivers, mike dunleavy, NEED I CONTINUE (add parker to the list)

          • tvor03

how was shane battier a flop? no, he wasn’t a franchise player, but he was an above-average role player. Bruce Bowen 2.0. And you didn’t mention Boozer, Deng, Hill, Maggette, Reddick.

I hate Duke as much as anybody. But you’re being seriously bias if you’re saying the program hasn’t produced any good players.

          • celticbleedgreenusa

battier, boozer, deng and maggette were all supposed to be superstars and mult-time all star players. same with boozer. non have done so. neither will parker. if parker turns out to be maggette than that is still a flop based on the above estimations. i watched the draft when pau gasol got picked ahead of battier and all the talking heads thought that was insane and battier was a franchise player. bowen is a retarded comparison as bowen is a two guard and battier is a 4.

again, simply delete your account and watch basketball before you make such idiotic statements

          • tvor03

Battier a 4? He played SF and occasional SG. Maybe in some small ball lineups in Miami did he play PF, but he was definitely a wing, as was Bowen.

          • celticbleedgreenusa

no. bowen was always an off guard. remember, he was with the celtics too and was a bum. he was only a useful role player once paired with tim duncan, david robinson, etc… either way, battier is a bum as well. check his numbers and actually watch the game of basketball. as i said, u are likely too young to have watched battier play… point being this draft will not yield any stars but randle is the best nba player of them all. doesnt matter cause ainge will flip this pick anyways regardless if its #1 or 8

          • MikeABQ

Battier is a bum?? He has never been a star and is past his prime now, but dude is not a bum. Take a minute to do some actual research and look at guys picked #6 since 2001, when Battier was picked at that slot. Yes, you can get better players than Battier(Lillard, Gallinari) at that position in the draft, but you can do a whole lot worse. Most drafts have a few stars and after that it’s hit or miss. During his prime he was an above average role player, no shame in that. If 2x NBA 2nd defensive team is your qualification for a bum, you might need to adjust your standards a bit. Randle is probably the most NBA ready at this moment, but I would be surprised if he ended up being the best player to come out of this draft

        • MikeABQ

Embiid has shown potential to be an elite NBA defender. He is only 20 years old, so his frame will fill out. Everyone has trouble with guys like Randolph and Aldridge, and no rookie would be expected to completly keep them in check. But inn time, I think he should be able to hold his own on the block. He is an inch taller than Aldridge and the same weight. His length can counter act the heavier guys like Jefferson, Monroe and Randolph who are nowhere near as athletic. The back issues are a concern but I would take him in a heartbeat if he fell out of the top three down to us. I don’t really like Randle unless a trade for Sullinger was in the works, their games are a little too close for me.

          • celticbleedgreenusa

what potential? seriously, do you watch basketball or just read the talking heads?

    • celticbleedgreenusa

I love Randle. He is the best NBA Game talent in the draft. No one questions his competitiveness like Jeff Green or Wiggins. Jabari Parker is a horrible bet as Duke Players adapt poorly to the NBA Game. EMBIID is a disaster waiting to occur… Sully is a poor man’s antoine walker, and walker had more ability to hit big shots in the 4th quarter. Olynyk is a keeper as a 6th man ashe will get quicker like a detlef schremph. Asik is the man you want together with Randle. If there is a catch shoot 2 guard with good off the ball and perimeter defense that is healthy then u get him. Kevin Love would be great but u cant have him and olynik on the floor at the same time as it will hurt ball movement, but asik and love together or asik and olynik would be pretty good if you have a scoring winger with gas left (paul pierce)… lots of work to do!!!

      • LA Flake

Sully is a poor man’s Antoine Walker?????? Did they legalize LSD where you live?

        • celticbleedgreenusa

Antoine averaged close to 20 and 10 for the majority of his career. You clearly are too young to have watched antoine his whole career. Antoine was the starting center his rookie year. When Sully (with his 12 and 7) averages anywhere close to 20 and 10, let me know…

          • swissflix

Toine was really the man for some time! Inside, outside, he had the whole game for the first couple of years.

    • jrleftfoot

He does need to get in better condition. This off-season may tellthe tale.

  • Jesse Dampolo

No idea why you guys are all obsessed with Kevin Love. He’s a no defense, stat stuffing, loser. Guy has never been over .500. He’s the REAL pf version of Carmelo Anthony. How can a city spend 6 years defending KG’s numbers because he does so much defensively… only to drool over a guy whose too concerned with stuffing the stat-sheet to actually play help D?

    • LA Flake

And he’s one of the biggest whiners in the league. Screw that!

    • adam

I’m with you on this. I rather keep Sully. Sully has that grit and balls attitude Love doesn’t have.

    • Curt Hays

Not disagreeing with you, but his PER is over 27.

      • celticbleedgreenusa

lol reminds me of the callers to weei when i worked there in 2000 saying we couldn’t trade hatteberg for sammy sosa…

I played the mock draft game on espn and most of the time, Celtics gets 5th or 6th pick and it’s Aaron Gordon. It did give the C 2nd place where they get Joel Embiid

    • celticbleedgreenusa

Aaron gordon won’t go before the 8th pick…

    • celticbleedgreenusa

and orlando will take EXUM at #4. forget what the mock draft says as its just that…

  • jason benn

Great so he will figure out his attitude problem in ten years or he’s a lazy bum that will be in and out of the league in two years……..pass! Plus I would think we don’t want another oh he will be really good eventually player.

  • Jester00

If they don’t get in the Top 3 by by 5 pick and some players hello A A- vet

  • bill_nair

I like Randle. I think he’s gonna be a good pro. I just don’t want another PF on the roster. But if were at 5th and Randle is available id say we lucked out.

    • celticbleedgreenusa

he is not a ‘PF’ in NBA terms. He is more a stretch 4 that is fast and atheltic. watch his game against wicheta state when he splits 4 defenders playing him in zone and he gets the lay up switching hands after a spin move starting 20 feet out… that translates to NBA now and nothing parker does the same, nor wiggins as he isnt strong enouogh to pull that off…

      • bill_nair

Im just talking about the position, PF, not the style of play, which you agree with when you said hes a stretch 4(PF).

      • tvor03

        I wouldn’t call him a stretch 4 since he can’t really shoot.

        • celticbleedgreenusa

he can shoot from 15 ft in and drive against a zone defense and has power to go one on one against a true pf

  • swissflix

What’s so bad about this Julius Randle? I haven’t seen a lot of him but i’m thinking (from a few youtube vids) a big body, strong rebounder = Zach Randolph eventually? Not bad for a fifth pick. What is it about his game, that you guys don’t like?

    • celticbleedgreenusa

more athletic than randolph… shawn marion is a better comp.

  • celticbleedgreenusa

    Arron Afflalo

    • celticbleedgreenusa

      omar asik

      • celticbleedgreenusa

        paul pierce

        • celticbleedgreenusa

kevin love or pau gasol (sign trade for hump)

  • celticbleedgreenusa

Napier is replacing Bradley. You heard it here first… his college numbers are near identical to rondo, yet napier is a better scorer.

  • Rjd12345

Don’t see how Randle is talented enough to replace Sully. They’re both really good scorers and rebounders who have problems defensively. Seems like a lateral move. I’d be happier with the upside of Vonleh (at center) or Smart as a combo guard if Wiggins, Parker, Embiid and Exum are off the table.
