Mock draft: The Celtics are fans of Aaron Gordon

In ESPN Insider’s latest Tank Rank, we hear about the Celtics interest in Aaron Gordon:

The Celtics like Parker, Wiggins and Embiid a lot. But they are also fans of Arizona’s Aaron Gordon, who is one of the best athletes in the draft. He’s not as polished offensively, but he’s one of those players who does a little bit of everything and impacts the game on both ends of the floor.

I don’t know anything about the 6-8, 210 lb Gordon, so let’s go to his scouting report:

  • Freakishly athletic forward
  • Explosive leaper
  • Terrific motor
  • Excellent defender
  • Surprisingly good ball handler

  • A tweener
  • Ugly jump shot

Ugly jump shot?

No thanks.

I want a scorer. A natural, smooth scorer.

My buddy was at the Arizona-Utah Pac 12 tourney game, and Danny Ainge struck up a conversation. I had to work . . . dammit. Anyway, Ainge was high on Gordon, and he showed my buddy how he needs to fix his jumpshot. It seems Ainge believes his jumper can be fixed.

What is this guy late 1st, 2nd rounder? Just outside of lottery?

    • MatthewWilding

Top 10. He’s drawn comparisons to Blake Griffin.

      • KWAPT

Yep..guy’s a freak but so much more..

      • eddysamson

So he’s a ‘worst case scenario’ and that worst case doesn’t seem to be all that bad!

  • Curt Hays

Regarding Gordon via wikipedia: ” The last junior to be Mr. Basketball in California was Tyson Chandler in 2000 and the one before that was Jason Kidd in 1991.”

Also, he appears to be a monster physically. This could mean fewer injuries. He ran track also. Oh, and he’s a rebounding fiend.

Just sent you a DM on Twitter-enjoy the game tonight..

  • DJ Woods

He is a top 10 pick but watching him play and reading his report…. all can think especially with the ugly shot is…. Shaun Marion

    • Curt Hays

I’d take Shawn Marion all day…

      • bill_nair

Prime Marion was a very good

One of my least favorite in this draft. A tweener with an ugly jump shot. No thanks. I thought highly of Derick Williams, wont make the same mistake twice.

If he commited to playing the 4 he’d be a beast. He wont be able to play the 3 in the NBA.

    • Curt Hays

yeah, and he’s probably too short to play the 4. But there ARE 13 positions in basketball…maybe BStevens knows how to properly utilize his rotations!

      • bill_nair

I think his athleticism and skill set would make him very effective at the 4. He’s a good defender just would need strength to consistently defend bigs. Paul Millsap-esque.

I want a scorer I don’t think he will be one. I think he’ll be a good player.

    • eddysamson

      What does tweener mean?

      • bill_nair

No true position. Typically when guys are more SF/PF combo (How OKC perceived Green early on).

Gordon said he wants to be a sf but I believe his true position is a PF. An elite Royce White (hope it doesn’t make him sound bad). If a team drafts him to be a PF he’ll be a good player. I don’t believe we need anymore 4s.

  • Jacquard Causeway

What we need is talent. Gotta take the best guy available. If that’s Gordon, you take him even though he probably won’t be a great scorer.

I see him as a weird combo of Andre Iguodala and Blake Griffin.

    • DJ Woods

You say he probably wont be a great scorer yet you see him as a combo of iggy and blake.. weird because both are great scorers.
