Rondo didn’t care that Ainge, Stevens didn’t want him to stay in LA

During his weekly interview on Toucher and Rich, Danny Ainge elaborated yet again on Rajon Rondo’s decision to skip the team flight to Sacramento so he could party with his family in Los Angeles:

“What happened was he stayed in [Los Angeles],” said Ainge. “He let [head coach] Brad [Stevens] know and he let me know that he was going to stay in L.A. an extra day, and we didn’t think that he should. But it was his choice and (we told him) there may be consequences if you stay. It was that simple.”

“In the end, him and I had a long talk about it. He planned it before and he had reason to believe it would be OK,” explained Ainge. “I understand his reason because of what he’s grown up with and what he’s witnessed. You won’t see it happen again, and we’ve just moved on from it.”

“I think that now Rondo understands more clearly what we want out of him as a captain,” said Ainge. “That we want him on the road with the team, and his leadership on the bench is important whether he plays or doesn’t.”

A few observations:

Why the f- is Ainge still talking about this? Just dance around the question with the usual “We are looking forward, not back” nonsense and close the book already.

Couch it anyway you want, but Rondo defied the wishes of his coach and team president.

Ainge mentioned consequences but the team did not issue a fine or suspension (as far as we know). Is it possible that Ainge leaked this story because he knew the media would overreact thus making Rondo deal with the firestorm a consequence? Just a theory…

Whether you approve of Rondo’s actions or not, be aware that the team and management back him:

“Rondo is an emotional, stubborn kid. He’s very bright, and I don’t mind these kinds of emotions,” said Ainge. “What I care about is he a guy I want to play with, play for, if the guys on the team back him and want him on their side night-in and night-out. Those are the really important issues. Rondo is never going to become Tom Brady and say all the politically correct things and do everything we want him to do, but we still love him in spite of that because his teammates back him and want him on their side. They will go to war with Rondo, anytime.

File under: Rondo being a dink Rondo.

I blame KG’s influence on him. I loved KG the player, one of my favorite Celtics of all time. But I HATED the fact that he never travelled wiht the team, or sat on the bench when he was injured. That was some seriously selfish bush league bullshit.

    • Curt Hays

He traveled with them in 2009. Maybe not always, but not never. The last couple of seasons he’d watch the game with Danny. How do you know he was even allowed to travel with the team if it was an acute injury that needed to be treated with lots of rest?

      • Danno

And this is the reason why I post here so little any more. I have attended EVERY home game from 2006-2014. KG NEVER sat on the bench even when they were at home. He sat on the bench for the first half on one playoff game in 2009. There was nothing about his injury which would have prevented him from being there. He was a selfish ass about it, and being the emotional leader of the team, that cascaded down to everyone else. THAT is what Danny is referring to.

        • Curt Hays

Interesting. I guess I didn’t realize that’s the way it was with KG. I’m sorry that you dislike us so much.

I like John, KwaPT, and Chuck just fine. I just can’t stomach your incessant cheerleading, Curt.

Can’t we all just get along?

          • tvor03

incessant cheerleading? God forbid a fan should act like a fan.

          • Curt Hays

Noted. I hope your day gets better, man.

Since you’ve seen all the games, I was wondering if Paul Pierce watched every game from the bench on the nights when he didn’t play, or did he also miss some of them?

i remember anseeing or reading about an interview with doc rivers that he was actually asking KG to not be on the bench when he was injured because he was too stressful. hapoened in the playoffs i think.

  • Curt Hays

This is annoying. Danny definitely needs to drop this. It keeps getting worse. What is he talking about — “because of what he’s grown up with and what he’s witnessed”?

    • Step

Chuck didn’t put the entire article but Ainge proceeds to talk about the culture difference when Doc was there and how he would take different flights and Kg wouldn’t sit on the bench.

      • Curt Hays

Thank you. I’ll go read it. That’s pretty annoying…and significant. Also, based on @disqus_e4F3MdzHOC:disqus’s assessment from having attended the home games, it isn’t looking good for KG.

        • Step

Ainge know what the hell he’s doing..I thought this stuff was over but here he goes elaborating. ..again.

I suspect Ainge went into greater detail about this to reiterate his support for Stevens and Rondo. If the talking heads can’t handle more context to the story, well, that’s fine. Neither Ainge nor Rondo care much what is said about them in the press.
