I’m not 100% on board this Bill Simmons trade proposal for Kevin Love

Bill Simmons has dreamed up a trade scenario that he believes will land the Celtics Kevin Love:

Like Love in Minnesota, [Rajon] Rondo can leave Boston in July 2015. And like Love, you can’t trade him unless it’s a team that (a) has assets to give back, and (b) could entice him into staying. Harder than you think. Houston and Dallas don’t have the assets. New York DEFINITELY doesn’t have the assets. A “Rondo to Sacramento for Isaiah Thomas, Ben McLemore, Derrick Williams’s expiring and the right for Boston to swap picks once in 2014, 2015 or 2016” deal makes sense on paper — and was seriously discussed last week, too — until everyone remembered that you’d have a better chance of seeing Rondo host an ABC late-night talk show of him playing Connect Four with celebrities called Connect Rondo than you would of seeing him spend the rest of his prime, five years, in Sacramento with Boogie Cousins.

So, what do you do? Well, aren’t you better off keeping Rondo — one of the league’s 15 to 20 best players when healthy — and finding him an All-Star teammate? Enter Kevin Love. They did it in 2007 with Paul Pierce and they could easily do it again: by paying a premium price for a second All-Star, suddenly it becomes MUCH easier to get that third All-Star. The Celtics couldn’t have convinced KG to play with just Pierce … but Ray Allen and Paul Pierce? The rest was history.

OK, so what happens if Boston … trumps everybody? Let’s say the Celtics lose the 2014 lottery and end up with a pick between no. 3 and no. 5. They could send that pick to Minny along with Atlanta’s first-rounder (probably ending up in the 13-to-18 range) and their 2015 Clippers pick for Love. And they could throw in Brandon Bass and Keith Bogans’s immediately waivable deal to make the contracts work. Oh, and if Minnesota were more interested in one or more of those future Brooklyn picks that Boston owns (unprotected in 2016 and 2018, pick swap in 2017), the Celts could discuss that, too. Remember, they have a WAR CHEST of picks: 10 in five years, including Brooklyn’s draft right as they’re entering the “Deron and Joe are old and Brook Lopez wears a suit to every game” phase of the Prokhorov era. You team up Love and Rondo and suddenly it’s 10 times easier to land that third All-Star. (You reading, Carmelo?) And yes, that deal could potentially net the Timberwolves three top-15 picks in a monster draft. Odds of it happening: 3-to-1.

I’m down with keeping Rondo and finding him All-Star teammates. But if the Celtics land at #3 in the lottery (and Parker, Wiggins and Embiid all turn pro), I’m not moving it that pick. Not for Kevin Love or any of the other 2015 free agents.

I would move any other combination of 1st round picks (3 is enough) and supplemental players to get Love. One obvious contingent being Love signs a long-term extension in Boston.

Man, reading that stuff gets me excited. Celts have so much ammo for a big trade even without sacrificing their lottery pick this year. If Danny can connect the right dots, we could be a JUGGERNAUT in the future.

  • Frank Aziza

NY Is talking about trying to get rondo and Love in free agency to play along side Carmelo. It’s a good big three offensively but they won’t stop anyone from scoring.

    • wil

i dont think NYK has enough to get Rondo and Love. It also means, Carmelo needs to sign a long term deal with the trainwreck knicks first and gamble on that chance.

      Melo is gone from NYK

I’d do it if we landed 5th but the thought of rondo with Embiid and love is incredible. Best front court we’d have since the bird era if Embiid panned out.

    • adam

i get nervous when i think about drafting big men. so many don’t pan out.

      • pierce Hart

Yeah Your right it’s all about the knees with Embiid it’s like oden and durant again with wiggins and Exum setting a spanner in the works

  • RedsLoveChild

If there`s any chance to make this trade, you do it!

It would be nice to land Wiggins, Parker, or Embiid…but none of these guys are in the same universe as a Lew Alcindor leaving UCLA in 1969!

Something is seriously wrong if you can`t get a quality FA to come here with building blocks such as Love, Rondo, Sullinger.

Besides, you can`t ignore what the Lakers have planned. After clearing out the salaries of Gasol and Nash, their goal is to sign Love in `14, Rondo in `15. And don`t kid yourself…once RR sees he won`t get a max contract in Boston, he`ll flee to LA to win titles, raise his visibility, and play at least 1 year next to Kobe.

    • tvor03

they can’t sign Love this year. He doesn’t become a FA until next season. And they wouldn’t have the money to have Love, Kobe, and Rondo.

      • RedsLoveChild

LA can always trade their `14 lottery pick, among other assets, to Minny for Love…Gasol`s contract {$19.2M} expires this year, Nash {$9.7M} next year.

Do yourself a favor and actually read Simmon’s piece before you comment anymore.

          • RedsLoveChild

Do yourself a favor…stop ignoring reality.

The Lakers always get their “man”…and their “man” wants to return to the city of his birth, the city of his college, and play for the same team his father played for.

Rondo could care less about the money if he is getting allstar teammates. he is pretty content from the interviews ive seen about salary

    • Curt Hays

I REALLY hope you’re wrong, Danny. If Rondo does that, I’ll have to burn my shoes and my jersey. He did say that he’d never play in Miami. I like to think he’d do the same regarding LA. But a max contract…worth it to most.

      • RedsLoveChild

Give me a few days notice…I`ll send you the kerosene!

    • Curt Hays

So then if you go play for Indiana do you get tutored by the best SF ever on how to build a driveway for your mom?

      • RedsLoveChild

The Goal : Larry thought he could save $200 by paving the driveway himself.

The Price : Two rings for the Celtics, chronic back pain for life, unlimited angst, and a shortened career.

If we get the 5th pick it’s a done deal I hope. If we get the 3rd Pick it depends on who you can get. Best case is for the Bucks to get the 4th Pick because they will pick Joel Embid. I doubt they fall to 4th cause they have the best shot now. If you draft wiggins or Parker that would be like Drafting Durant instead of trading for an established player like we did in 07. Even if we get a guy like Embid or parker they still won’t reach their peak until guys like Rondo are gone and sully is going to want 8/10 a year by then.

Best thing to do is trade what Simmons said, That leaves you with Sully, Love Green, Bradley and Rondo. With Green opting out, you can go grab a guy like Parsons. Hell if Bradley wants to leave go get Haywood. With the Cap situation in Houston they either have to pick up his option and let him become a free agent or resign him the next year for 8/10 or decline his option and he become a restricted free Agent. Thanx to guys like Lin and Osik, along with Howard, and Harden that will be tough.

thats why our offseason is gonna be interesting. Because we can go multiple ways about it. First thing should be An all star trade target to lure in Melo, like in about, Kevin Love.

and im also interested in getting Hayward instead of resigning bradley so we will have a do it all two guard, which finally moves us on from being undersized guards.

Then target Tyson Chandler, if the knicks will move on from Melo era, they would have to let go of chandler too.

if all falls into place 3rd seed easy lol. though Melo is a lil farfetched since Bulls is a better place for him

  • adam

We all saw what Minnesota did with Boston’s picks from KG trade. They drafted 3 guards or something?

  • Mike

That deal would have to be done in a heartbeat! Why would you not take a proven All-Star PF over a rookie???

  • Jester00

Chuck please what ever crack you are smoking put the pipe down!!!!!!!! this is the worst thing I have read since John said on the Garnett trade “I do not like this trade”

    • Curt Hays

HAHAHAHA, John said that? Where is he? We need to have a talk.

      • Jester00

said it in 2007 fact, they use to have the archives on here but no more you should have seen the early photo shop stuff!!!!!! It made me cry laughing I wish it was still out there or they did top ten photo shop thing

i like this one but John has better

        • Curt Hays
