Rumor: Asking price for Rondo is two 1st round picks

Chuck - Red's Army February 17, 2014 Rajon Rondo, Rumors 23 Comments

Sam Smith of Bulls.com fires the first shot in the post All-Star game trade rumors. He has this vague “scoop” on what the Celtics allegedly want for Rajon Rondo:

This is the big week in the NBA when Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Love, Greg Monroe, Pau Gasol and Rajon Rondo are not likely to be traded.

The asking price if you can get Rondo is said to be two unprotected first rounders.

Update: Grantland’s Zach Lowe confirms the report:

This report is way too vague for me to believe it.

Draft pick compensation for Rondo in any deal would vary by team. I’m pretty sure Danny Ainge wouldn’t accept two 1st round picks from the Heat, Pacers or Thunder for Rondo.

Buckle up. The trade rumor rollercoaster has started.

I saw this in another article that referred to this as a HUGE asking price. Can anyone explain why 2 1st round picks with no guarantee on year or place of pick is a huge asking price? It seems like selling Rondo for pennies on the dollar to me.

The assumption is 2 solid draft picks. I don’t think anyone breathing would think Danny would trade Rondo for anything less than 2 lotto picks.

    • RedsLoveChild

Rondo is a “proven commodity”, and Ainge will insist on a proven commodity in return. Unlike Bass/Green, they cannot gamble on what they get in return for Rondo.

For the most part, draft picks are “merely speculative” in their quality.

trade compensation for Jeff green? Celtics will pay the other team a million to take this garbage off their hands.

    • jrleftfoot

Jeff Green isn`t a great player , but he certainly isn`t garbage. posts like that are just silly.

      • eddysamson

Posts like that wouldn’t happen if he wasn’t paid so much. He doesn’t need much less, but he also shouldn’t be getting that much.

        • DJ Woods

$5million to score 15pts a night? Ill deal.

          • eddysamson

Exactly. Green really is like the perfect compliment to a star or 2. He just shouldn’t be making over 8mil a year (or less than 4 or 5) and he should NEVER be a #1 option. If we can keep him and resign for less when his contract is up he will be a perfect piece to our next championship…that is if we don’t end up with a star SF in the draft or from FA.

        • jrleftfoot

He may be overpaid, but he didn`t negotiate the deal with himself.People calling players garbage on message boards make themselves look foolish . They remind me of the Texas Tech” superfan” that got shoved last week. He had it coming. Of course , Jeff Green can`t shove anybody through their keyboard.

      • DJ Woods

Making $10million+ to shoot 25% basically every night and average 15pts and not play defense? Yes he is garbage.

        • KGino

Jiri Welsch is garbage. Jeff can ball, but with his potential he is certainly a disappointment

        • jrleftfoot

You`re not paying him, he`s not shooting 25% and his defense is better than average . Other than that, you`re right on the money.

This is FUD from another team. If this were a legit offer from Ainge, another team would’ve taken it by now, because it’s an incredibly cheap price. Especially given the Stepien rule. There’s a reason why Woj hasn’t said a word about this.

    • LA Flake

Danny’s probably looking for two UNPROTECTED picks from crappy teams that’ll be in the lottery for awhile. If Danny gets to draft Jabari, who is too young to pair with Rondo, it makes sense to build around Jabari because Rondo’s not going to lead this team past Miami, Indiana and OKC. No disrespect to Rondo. There’s just no enough talent we can realistically put around Rondo to leapfrog those teams.

      • pierce Hart

You seem to have forgot 2010 and 2011 where he took unathletic aging veterans and gave miami a real scare things could’ve went differently on any given day. Rondo with Sullinger Bradley Parker and a centre like Sanders and Noah could take any team

        • LA Flake

Here’s the reality. Rondo is going to command the max, if not, close to it. Sully will command north of $10 million if he keeps improving. You have to figure someone will step in and drive up his price. AB is looking for 8 million. That’s already over $30 million and possibly close to $40 million tied up to 3 players. And you’re talking about adding a center like Sanders or Noah and tie up $40-50 million? In addition to someone like Jabari? Who’s going to come off the bench, John and Chuck from Redsarmy? Also, Rondo/AB/Sully/Jabari/Noah/Sanders looks great on paper but who’s going to be our go-to guy? Who’s going to close out games for us? Who’s going to go toe to toe against the Durants of the league? Jabari in his 3rd year? Not gonna happen.

Nothing against Rondo. But if Danny gets Jabari, he’ll be wise to build around him, Sully and other “youngins” on the team.

          • pierce Hart

Just to be clear I don’t mean have sanders and Noah just one one of them. Well if you have sanders say and draft Parker assuming players like bass green and Wallace are gone after 3 years then you would have sanders coming off the books as Parker is ready for an extension. You’d have about 36 mil commited to the other 3 plus extra salaries for rookie vets etc. you could easily offer him a max deal and draft uoung serviceable Centres who would help. In my opinion Rondo can be a go to guy I just feel when he’s switched on and the team need him he delivers. Sully and Parker could also develop into that role as well from what I’ve seen especially Sullinger. Bradley would bring good defence and a wing option contributing well each night. In the end if you want a centre you can trade him for one as it’s much easier to draft a good SG that can defend than a C that can do so.

        • Mike C

Agreed! Not sure where LA Flake is coming from on this one? A healthy Rondo is one of the top 3 point guards in the league. You could easily build a championship contending team around him. Add Kevin Love and a first round draft pick and I’d put our team up against anyone in the league.

  • Double P

Avery Bradley, Jeff Green, Kris Humphries and 1 or 2 first round picks for Carmelo. Do you pull the trigger? Carmelo/Rondo/Sully to build around is pretty damn good.

    • eddysamson

What’s the point? He will be a FA by the time we start getting competitive again anyways. If that wasn’t the case I wouldn’t totally hate this trade if we swapped Bogans for Humph.

    • LA Flake

Just say No to Melo. After getting used to KG and his amazing DEFENSE for 6 years, I want nothing to do with an overrated ball hog like Carmelo.

  • pierce Hart

Look at what Philly got for Jrue holiday. That is all.

  • Dustin Chapman

90% of everything you hear about any team leading up to the trade deadline is either put out by the team the story is about, or another one that wants a piece from their squad. Not only that, but 98% of it never, ever, EVER happens. Writers are fed so much BS this time of year it is hysterical.
