Mock draft: Danny Ainge is a fan of Dante Exum

ESPN Insider Chad Ford has another mock draft and I’m not a fan of the prediction.

4. Dante Exum | Boston Celtics | 10.4 percent to win lottery

Analysis: The Celtics’ biggest need is in the middle. Kelly Olynyk was their draft choice last year, but he’s more of a stretch 4. But there aren’t a lot of those players in the draft after Embiid, which is partly what makes him so valuable. The Celtics could go with Julius Randle here, but with Jared Sullinger playing so well, the need for a physical frontcourt player isn’t as pressing. The Celtics’ backcourt is pretty set with Rajon Rondo and Avery Bradley, but that wouldn’t stop the Celtics. General manager Danny Ainge is a fan of Exum, Rondo’s future in Boston is perpetually in doubt and while Bradley has been good, Exum might be an upgrade long-term.

Sigh. It’s imperative the Celtics land in the top 3 to ensure a chance at Joel Embiid, Andrew Wiggins or Jabari Parker. You can throw anyone of them alongside the current core of Rondo, Bradley and Sullinger.

For those who want to draft Exum and trade Rajon Rondo, check out the kid’s scouting report:

  • Long, athletic point guard
  • Excellent penetrator
  • Quick with the ball
  • Pushes the action
  • Acrobatic finisher
  • Good passer

  • Needs to add strength
  • An inconsistent shooter from the perimeter

Gee… sounds an awful lot like someone we love to hate.

The sky is blue, grass is green, Danny Ainge really likes a combo guard in the draft.

Why is there this big idea that half the fan base hates Rondo? He has been nothing but professional off the court during his rehab… He is as much of a competitor as Pierce/KG were… And he has done numbers for my eyesight since his return (watching anyone else run our offense is ugly).

I don’t see it. Celtics fans should love Rondo. They should demand his effort on the defensive end (like any player), but Rondo is a keeper. We build around him.

In addition to that, I can’t stand that 85% of people talk about Rondo like he isn’t even a part of the team anymore because “the Celtics are definitely gonna trade him.” I’m not sitting in Danny’s office either, so who really knows, but the notion that the Celtics are 100% intent on trading Rondo is getting pretty annoying.

I don’t love rondo, but I don’t see the point in drafting Exum whatsoever.

You nailed it ” It’s imperative the Celtics land in the top 3 to ensure a chance at Joel Embiid, Andrew Wiggins or Jabari Parker”

  • LA Flake

If we can’t land Embiid, Parker or Wiggins, I want Julius Randle. Smart looks like a good player, too, but Randle looks like a beast. I love Sully but we can never have enough good bigs and we can always trade one later to fill our needs.

Like all NBA teams, the Celts have two choices :

Either find talented guys with size, who can do serious damage in the paint…..or, remain irrelevant for eternity.

Exum would be my choice as we have added front court players in Sully, Olynyk, Faverani, Iverson, and still considering bringing back Hump and might not be able to deal away Wallace. All while trading away Lee to get Bayless’ contract. Exum could be a really good piece, especially if/when we land out of the top three. He brings great size at 6-6, and can play both guard spots. Plus he can learn from both RR and AB. Makes us deeper, and taller in the back court.

    • Brad

I’m with you on this. I love AB, but he doesn’t have the track record, health wise, to prove he can be our 2-guard to rebuild around. There’s also no guarantee that we will offer Bradley enough money to stick around (or Rondo in 2015 for that matter). Exum is an insurance policy for both. Give him time to learn & grow behind those guys & see what he becomes.

Exum next to Rondo would be perfect! Ima fan of the kid and hope he falls in our laps.

If we don’t land top three we should consider trading.
