Enemy Chatter: Jerryd Bayless is a streaky scorer

We often wonder what opposing teams, their beat reporters and bloggers are saying about the Celtics. Here’s a look at some enemy chatter from Memphis.

Bayless is a streaky scorer, and when he goes cold, he goes ice cold. He had struggled all season with his shot, and even though had progressed lately, was still shooting well below his career norms at 37.5% from the field and 28.8% from the 3-point line. Lee is a 6’5 shooting guard, shooting 49% from the field and 44% from beyond the arc. He is also currently under contract for the next two season for $5.4 million and $5.675 million respectively.

My initial reaction is that the Grizzlies improved their ability to score the ball from beyond the arc, but they also added a $11 million over the next two years, assuming they don’t absorb it with their trade exception. If they do, then the salary isn’t that hard to stomach, not so much as the extra minutes that will be given to Nick Calathes will be.

I wanted to share reaction about the Lee/Bayless trade from bloggers in Memphis. They agree that Courtney Lee fills a big need on their team. They also have much respect for Jerryd Bayless.

73% of fans on that site approve of the trade. What do you think?

Danny should be in the conversation for EOY just for finding a way to get rid of that contract.

Only if he can do something about either Wallace or Green next. SO MUCH MONEY is invested in those 2 as our only SFs and they are actually pretty terrible in comparison to the league. Green comes in at #20 in the league for PER for SFs. There’s really no one of any significance below him other than Josh Smith (having a terrible shooting season) who is #21.

Danny is going to need to pull of some real magic to get rid of Crash…I like his hustle, but his confidence on offense is all but gone and he has no shot anymore. And his contract is way more than what he is currently worth…seems like it would be impossible to even package him with another player with how much he is getting paid.

I dont get how Clee had a bad deal. Yes he didnt produce but he wasnt signed to an outrageous deal like Green or GW. He was basically making the MLE, very easily moveable. Thats part of the reason hes gone now instead of the other vets.

Its nice when a trade is liked by both sides (and the fans), but who doesn’t love getting a steal? Like Pau for Bynum if that goes down!

My brother is a Grizz fan and has nothing good to say about Bayless. Inconsistent & poor decision making were some of the things he told me to look out for. Hes got talent, curious to see how he does in a new setting.

The Green contract is not a bad deal. He is paid as the 16th best pf and 13th best sf. That is only middle of the road. If Danny believes that the team with Rondo at the helm and Green and the emerging Sullinger as running mates is the next core three players, that is good with me. Green plays multiple positions and defends well against three major sf scorers. No Green on LBJ/George/Melo would be big problems. That said, i like this deal for this year, but don’t think Bayless will be signed for more money next year, when Danny can give the money to Bradley-Brooks-Pressey.

You could replace the name “Jerryd Bayless” with “Courtney Lee” in the quoted paragraph, and it would read exactly the same.

The rest of the deal is Ryan Gomes to the Celtics and a 2016 2nd round pick to the Grizz.

We’re losing a crucial amount of length by losing Lee, but hopefully Bayless proves to be a worthy back-up to Rondo so we can move Crawford to the 2.
