The Celtics had 22 offensive rebounds in last night’s loss to the Pelicans.
That’s more than double their average.
We haven’t seen an ORB number like that since 2008. Offensive rebounding was never a priority for Doc Rivers. He cared more about getting back on defense than hitting the glass.
It’s hard to argue with that philosophy when the Celtics ranked at or near the top in Opp FG% during the new Big 3 era (1, 1, T8, T2, 1, 6).
Jared Sullinger corralled 9 of the 22 ORBs. Kendrick Perkins was the last Celtic to reach that number (2009). Danny Fortson and Vitaly Potapenko each had 9 during the 2000 season.
Sullinger was 3 away from tying Robert Parish’s team record of 12 (twice).
Note: The Basketball Reference ORB individual game stats date back to 1986 and that’s probably why you don’t see Bill Russell’s name in this blog.
(h/t Jay for the lesson in team ORB)
