Your Morning Dump… Where the Knicks continue to dream big about Rajon Rondo

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big storyline. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.

According to league sources, the Knicks’ first prong is to try to attract the Celtics’ Rajon Rondo. This idea has been tossed around in various forms for a while now, it’s not shocking. But the way the Knicks are hoping to get Rondo is a little unusual.

It’s not in free agency in 2015 but later this season or next summer when he comes back from a torn ACL. The Knicks are hoping Rondo will be interested in making a maneuver similar to what Anthony did back in 2011 and eventually try to force a trade to the Knicks, sources said.

The Celtics have consistently denied they want to trade Rondo. But once this trade deadline passes, and it isn’t clear if he will even play before February, Rondo will have only one guaranteed season left on his contract. Like with Anthony when he applied pressure to the Denver Nuggets by threatening to leave in free agency, the Knicks wonder if Rondo will be able to have a say in where he might be traded if the Celtics end up fearful he’ll leave in free agency.

This speculation involving the Knicks is bordering on absurd.

Can someone please explain to me what makes the Knicks a desirable location for Rajon Rondo?

Last I checked, they were an old, under-achieving mess of a team led by an average coach and a meddlesome owner with a history of horrible personnel decisions.

Meanwhile, the Celtics are a young, over-achieving bunch led by an up-and-coming coach, a basketball savvy GM and business savvy ownership group.

Let’s take a giant leap and assume Rondo doesn’t want to play in Boston or vice versa.

The Knicks only valuable trade assets are shooting guards (Iman Shumpert, Tim Hardaway Jr) and 2015 and 2017 1st round draft picks. If the Celtics are unable to sign Avery Bradley long term, then maybe they’re interested in Shumpert or Hardaway. Ainge will always covet 1st round draft picks, but with 9 over the next 5 years, there comes a time when he’ll have seek impact players. The only way a deal works with NY is with a third team.

Do you know what makes more sense than the Rondo to NY scenario? Melo coming to Boston.

It makes no sense. If Carmelo wants to play with Rondo the better fit would be Melo coming to Boston.

    • bill_nair

This is more likely than Rondo forcing his way there. Specially considering Melo may not be there next time Rondo plays.

      • LA Flake

Melo is an anti-Celtic. He doesn’t play hard. He bitches and moans. He doesn’t play with pride. He just wants all the glory. He can remain a Knick. He and the Knicks deserve eachother.

        • bill_nair

Melo is an egotistical chucker but to say he doesn’t play hard is completely false. No one on that team has played harder than melo this year. I know no one likes the guy but id welcome him on this team with open arms. Seems people forget what a big headed asshole pierce once was. Look at Zach Randolph. Players can turn it around and id take one with Melos talent anyday.

          • KGino

            Not melo

        • bill_nair

For what its worth, Crawford was a huge “anti-celtic” coming into this season and I wanted him nowhere near this team. Hes proved a good portion of us naysayers wrong.

          • KGino

I was clamoring for them to start Crawford after the preseason… But anyways, melo is a CANCER on another level than some bench player. The problem with it being on another level is he’d think he’s the alpha dog of the team and you’re alpha dog can’t chuck up 25 shots a game and play no defense

    • BillZ4rm585

Totally agree with you on this one! Its a much better opportunity for Melo to step his team play up and grow together with one of the soon to be major competitors in in the east. Brad stevens could definitely make a Rondo/Melo combination work! Melo would just have to not h use his Iso Game as much.

So there plan is to bait Rondo into forcing his way out? Isnt this considered tampering by league rules? Good ol’ Knickerbockers.

  • MrCuret

Rondo has to do whatever he feels is right for him & his fam, there is no loyalty in the Celtics anymore, especially two-way loyalty (example: Paul Pierce), so why it should flow just one way. When Danny trades players “he is a genius”, when players leave they are “disloyal”. This is not logical me. I still think Ray Allen did the right thing in FA. So if Rondo wants to stay in Boston that’s great, but if he wanted to leave that’d be ok too. Danny Ainge is LOYAL to NO ONE as a GM, so why should players be loyal to him? After all, the NBA is a business.

    • LA Flake

Paul Pierce was my favorite player for 15 years. And I hate that he wasn’t able to retire a Celtic. But Danny should be loyal to no one other than the Celtics.

      • BillZ4rm585

pierce will still retire a celtice Bro.

    • BillZ4rm585

I trully think we should go for melo, get him to come to boston and and work on gettin a Decent 5, Sully is a good 4 i would keep him long term.

      • MrCuret

Agree! Rondo, Bradley, Sullinger, Melo & if they could trade for Asik that would a pretty good starting lineup

    • forever_green

I agree MrCuret, I hate DA for changing what was a tradition in Boston. It would show some class if DA would at least sign Paul back to retire here.

  • Rich Jensen

Because, you know, Melo forcing a trade to the Knicks has worked *so well* for the Knicks.

  • Rjd12345

I think (and I could be wrong) that they can’t trade their 2015 or 2017 picks because of the Stepien Rule. They traded their 2014 pick to Denver and their 2016 pick goes to Toronto or Denver, so they don’t even have those as trade assets….making the idea of Rondo heading there even more delusional

  • zippittyay

I would lap up my dog’s vomit off the floor before I would root for Melo in a Celtic’s uniform.

“PLEASE RAJON COME TO NEW YORK WE ARE SO CLOSE TO GETTING A CHAMPIONSHIP ALL WE NEED IS YOU!!!”-saID NO ONE EVER!! i cant say dolan is a bigger fool than i thought because I as well as everyone in the world knows what an idiot this guy is, leave the good rebuilding project the celtics have around you and start fresh with a brand new rebuilding project. i think rondo prefers being that a hole that destroys the knicks when they play against them rather then being their star that brings them a ring.which there are no guarantees with the knicks at all except that they wil guarantee they are a laughing stock for centuries to come with bad decisions and signings, who wants to be on a team with a bunch of finger pointers and cry babies??? yes rondo would love to force his way out because he just is dying to get into that hell hole yeahhhhhhh right not gonna happen, honestly why even bother posting this stuff forget that is your job as a reporte blogger whatever if it is something this dumb just save everyone the trouble and dont post it post something that isnt complete garbage and a waste of time to hear about

  • RedsLoveChild

As for a trade, unless they give Boston their first round picks for infinity…NY has nothing of value to offer in exchange for Rondo.

As a free agent, Rondo would sign with NY in a minute if given a max contract. He won`t come close to getting a max contract from the Celts.

This obvious tampering by use of the media should shock me, but unfortunately it doesn’t.
This has been the year of wink winker calls, and spilled cokes, getting in the way of the pass, and White Russian handshakes, special “rehabs” in Germany, and riggin’ for Wiggins. The entirety of the NBA now seems to be a bunch of cheaters trying to out cheat each other.
My father laughs at me for loving the NBA like I do. He said that the other 3 sports are run by people that care about their respective games, the NBA is run by Lawyers and ad execs.
This is just another drop in the bucket of evidence to support that claim. This is a Lawyer move. It’s not wrong unless you can prove otherwise.

Players who don’t ever deserve to don a Celtics uniform: Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard, Lebron James, Deron Williams. I wouldn’t take a single name on that list if they payed US
