Throwback Thursday: “The Wheelchair Incident”

Lakers fans and Paul Pierce haters can joke all they want about the “wheelchair incident“. But for Celtics fans, it’s become a memorable moment in the career of one of Boston’s most prolific scorers.

With a little less than 7 minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter of Game 1 of the 2008 NBA Finals, Pierce was inadvertently sideswiped by teammate Kendrick Perkins. Paul’s leg buckled a bit, and he fell to the floor writhing in pain. He had to be carried off the parquet, and Celtics fans feared the worse. Dr. Brian McKeon got him off his feet, and into a wheelchair for precautionary reasons. A short time later, Pierce miraculously emerged from the Celtics’ tunnel, to thunderous applause. And the rest as they say is history. Behind 22 pts from Paul & another 24 from KG, the Celtics went on to win 98-88 and take a 1-0 lead in the series. Boston would win the Finals in six games-the clincher being a 131-92 thrashing of Kobe and the Lakers.

Our friend RD6 uploaded highlights of this memorable game the other day. Enjoy:

I just watched that series last week. We should have won in 09 and 2010 but KG and Perk knees. Damn it.

    • KWAPT

No doubt in mind they repeat in 09 with KG healthy and 2010 w/Perk under the boards/on the defensive block in G7. *sigh*

I was blessed enough to go to every home game in this series… I will never ever forget this play, the air that was sucked outta the building, and the thunder when he stormed back out of that tunnel

    • LA Flake

The air was sucked out of my house, too! But then I started screaming and pumping my fist when he came through that tunnel. Oh, man…

Nothing but a pure Academy Award performance by PP! If he had played professional soccer he could have been a Hall of Famer with that acting. How anyone could compare PP’s “wheelchair” move to Willis Reed in the 1970s playoffs is beyond me. The air sucked out, really? He made it look like his career was over, nothing special that night.

Whoa bro, 10 months late on the response. But yea, the air was sucked out of the building, thats what happens when your best player goes down in the Finals with a seemingly serious injury.

Your Willis Reed comment is just obscure as all hell.

Nothing special that night? Just the seeds of yet another banner being planted… Nothing special for anti celtics fans i suppose.

RedsArmy…where grown ass men come to weep like a bunch of little girls since July 2013.

Why the down votes?.If you read LA’s comments you would know he meant it in a good way.

The Celtics were {by far} the best team in the NBA throughout the entire 2007-08 season. How they ever lost a total of 10 playoff games remains a mystery!
