Sixers hire Brett Brown, Larranaga staying in Boston

Jay LarranagaCeltics assistant coach Jay Larranaga will remain a Celtics assistant after losing out on the Philadelphia 76’ers head coaching job.  That will go to San Antonio’s Brett Brown

Brett Brown, a longtime San Antonio Spurs assistant and head coach of Australia at the 2012 Olympics, has agreed to become the Philadelphia 76ers’ new coach, a league source told

The 52-year-old Brown will receive a four-year guaranteed contract, a crucial investment by the Sixers as they embark on an extended overhaul of their roster with a new management team.

It’s widely believed that Larranaga is head coaching material, so it probably won’t be long before he gets a shot somewhere.  For now, he’ll stay in Boston and be a very important voice on the Celtics bench.  He’s the guy that will help guide new head coach Brad Stevens through some of the mine fields that exist in Boston.

Add Larranaga to the list of people who are fully invested in making this Celtics team as good as it can possibly be.  If they overachieve and Stevens shines as a head coach, Stevens will almost certainly spread the credit around to his staff.  That shine on Larranaga will help add to his appeal as a future head coach.

Brad’s got quite the coaching team around him now. Too bad they are missing a big man in the middle. Would love to see Perk back in Green and some form of Lee and one of Boston’s many picks leaving in return. Boston doesn’t need a high lottery or playoff first round pick, they have a great group of scrappers and with a bully at the 5 like Perk, they’d be set to at least make the 2nd round next May.

The Sixers went from a really good team just two years ago to bottom feeders again, crazy.
