Report: Lord Stern forcing Celtics/Clips to renegotiate trade

UPDATE: His highness spoke briefly about the situation on ESPN Radio.

According to ESPN’s Marc Stein:

Source tells ESPN that Celts & Clips have today begun discussing new trade scenarios to try to satisfy league’s misgivings on these deals

Last tweet means that Celts/Clips deals — IF agreed — won’t necessarily take form of DeAndre Jordan & two firsts going to Boston

And from Sport City’s Mark Heisler:

NBA has problem w/twin transactions. Team official: ‘NBA guys say they don’t see how this can happen’

Either someone didn’t explain it to right or ignored reply. Team officials say NBA lawyers told #Celtics, #Clippers days ago it wouldn’t fly

Make it stop. Make it stop!!!

    ughhhhhhh when will it end!?!

    • Chulinho

      Probably after Game 7.

      • eddysamson

        hah yeah, you’re probably right

  • Chulinho

Actually, Chuck, Stern is beginning to resemble Emperor Palpatine.

This is beyond ridiculous. I’m done with Doc at this point, and I may be spiteful enough to hope that the deal can’t work, just so that he has to broadcast or something and doesn’t get another ring.

I don’t think there’s a way both trades happen…but I’m ready to say goodbye to Doc.

David Stern can`t help himself…he just loves to piss off Chris Paul!

      Good one.

Is it Stern or is it the lawyers barking? What does the CBA say about these deals?

  • art

Not understanding what the problem is. This is an highly unusual situation as far as both a coach and player changing teams. Don’t know how the league could prove that both deals are related or contingent. Definitely not in a court of law. Whatever is in the CBA is ridiculous. If this blocked, you can never let a team sign away your coach and make a separate deal with players at the same time, ever. Absurd.

Can’t they just make the trade now and then let Doc out of his contract at a later date?

    • frickenWaaaltah

The league does not like cutesy cute attempts to circumvent the rules and can invoke the power to block any move that does so.

Given how public these negotiations have been, that means the Clippers probably can’t get both Doc and KG for the 2013-2014 season.

      Somebody messed this up bad.

  • frickenWaaaltah

Thank you, David Stern. Seriously, bro.

I’m not a Stern fan, but you have to admit this doesn’t pass the sniff test. Personally, I think the NBA would be better off with a bit more Red Auerbach style wheeler dealer free market than the overly bureaucratic process it has, but this is currently what we’ve got. I was wondering how this deal could skate around the rules and the answer is, it probably can’t.

What Stern said on ESPN was “I would say in the language of diplomacy that the teams are aware that the collective bargaining agreement doesn’t authorize trades involving coaches contracts. The only consideration that can be done here in player transactions is other players, draft picks, and a very limited amount of cash. But coaches contracts don’t qualify as extra consideration, or acceptable consideration in player transactions. The teams know that. It has been confirmed to them. And…what the rules won’t allow can’t be gotten around by breaking it up into two transactions.”
