New twist in the theater of the absurd: Could Doc return?

John - Red's Army (@RedsArmy_John) June 20, 2013 Celtics News, Danny Ainge, Doc Rivers, Kevin Garnett 26 Comments

This has been, without a doubt, one of the most absurd sagas I’ve ever seen in NBA history.

From the BEGINNING, those of us (myself included) who doubted there was any legitimacy to this said 2 things:

1:  Donald Sterling is too f’ing cheap to do this.  That was proven the first time this deal died.  Slumlord Sterling didn’t want to take back salary… and he didn’t want to give up two #1 picks.  It took a threat from his franchise player, Chris Paul, to rekindle this wildfire.

2:  You can’t trade coaches anyway.  Yes, they can walk away from a contract for some compensation, but you can’t tie that to a player transaction.

It never made sense.

But these two teams, and both deserve equal blame, continued this ridiculous endeavor despite all the warning signs.  Now David Stern is smirking his smug smirk and wagging his finger at them like he’s Dikembe Mutombo.

“no no no… not today!”

One or both of these teams couldn’t resist blathering about the proposed deal for whatever reason.  Maybe it was a public nod to Chris Paul to say “see… we’re doing things!! PLEASE DON’T LEAVE US!!” Maybe it was Boston.  Who knows.  All I know is the blatant, obvious ties between Doc and KG going to the Clippers have possibly killed the deal.  Like for real this time.

And now we’re left with this.  After being beaten over the head with how much both teams wanted this so they could begin their respected processes of moving towards their opposite goals, neither team could get squat.  And now Doc may have no choice but to come back if he wants to coach.

And we’re supposed to…. what… forget all this happened?

Good luck with that.

Look, I don’t blame anyone here for wanting this.  The Clippers want to get over the hump and contend.  Danny wants to get this rebuild over with.  Doc wants to be happy with his job, and KG wants to play for Doc in his last year or two.

All of that is fine with me.

But this clusterf*ck has turned everyone into a fool.  This has been a bumbling mess at every turn, and we’re all sick of it.

Both teams have made a mockery of the process.  It’s time to end it, hire your crisis PR firms, and move on.

For PR purposes Ainge will probably pin it all on him and say “Doc NEVER wanted to leave, I saw an opportunity and had to pursue it. Doc just went along with it”

    • John Smith

Hopefully. Doc’s one of the best coaches in the league and he may be happy in Boston if Danny deflects some of the Heat he’ll face. We all know he wanted this to happen, but Danny saying that could keep Doc happy in Boston.

  • John Smith

If this was all about Doc, KG and Pierce ending their careers together, then why can’t they do it in Boston? I know Rondo isn’t Chris Paul, but the West isn’t the East either. Those 3 have a much better chance winning in Boston than in LA, in my opinion. Depending on what happens tonight, the Heat may not even be the juggernaut they are now next season, making a championship truly possible.

I’m sure Danny can work something to bring one more legit piece to Boston. Most of us would rather have cap space in 2014 and 2015 than Deandre Jordan.

    • WardenOfTheNorth

because Pierce is gone. He will not play for the C’s next season. they probably discussed this scenario months ago.

also, it’s not like deandre jordan is mark blount. he’s an young athletic big, who needs some guidance and some post moves. i remember years back when nobody wanted Tyson Chandler or Zach Randolph. Mostly because they just couldn’t figure it out. I agree that Jordan probably makes too much $$ but it wouldn’t surprise me if in 2-3 years, he’s one of the best defensive bigs in the league.

Lol the heat one the title on Tuesday night? I bet you the spurs will have something to say about that. An i would bet you $10 (I’m a studentand have no money) that that won’t be the case tonight either. The spurs are not the kind of team that won’t bring it tonight.

    • Frank Aziza

I agree!!! But Danny only has faith in KG and PP after they get one game away from the finals or losing the finals.

“But this clusterf*ck has turned everyone into a fool. This has been a bumbling mess at every turn, and we’re all sick of it.”

I am so god damn sick of this. And I even kind of wanted it to go down, too. Just straight up tired of it.

  • cezsays

Danny Ainge sucks, and is probably the main reason Doc wants out. I don’t blame him one bit.

    • Double D

      Why? What did Danny do?

  • RedsLoveChild

This really is absurd!…For a Celtic-Clipper trade, this one doesn`t even rate!

In 1978, they traded OWNERS {not merely a coach} with each other!

The Celts traded their owner {Irv Levin} for John Y. Brown.

  • forever_green

    Well..I don’t forgive or forget..so yeah..good luck.

  • Curt Hays

Like was said before, this has probably been a typical situation throughout the years…if we didn’t have Twitter, this would be just like any other discussion process.

  • eddysamson

I am pretty sure I just read that Stern actually did block it saying Doc can not be traded.

  • forever_green

When the C’s got KG, I never thought about losing him & how bad it would feel..I guess because I thought keeping him was a no brainer..with DA anything is possible.

  • Frank Aziza

Fire Danny and Doc for making the Celtics look like ML Carr or Rick Pittino is charge. Bring Pierce back to retire in green and welcome KG back if he wants to go one more shot with last seasons roster. Not only has no loyalty been shown to the greatest fan base in the NBA but we are now a joke. We are involved with the clippers in madness. Sad

  • Lee in Oregon

    Maybe Doc really ” is a Celtic”…..

Cue the CP3 for Rondo rumors………

  • Ryan Noseworthy

Oh man… The Men In Black picture just made my day!

  • I bleed green in L.A.

Send Doc off for the two 1st round picks. Keep KG, move Pierce and pieces/picks for Josh Smith, problem solved?

    • I bleed green in L.A.

      and grab Oden or Blatche?

    • KGino

Yes send Doc of for 2 picks. I would love to see him go and we keep everyone, then trade at the dead line.

      • KGino

        off*

  • Romeo

Nba drama at its finest, now LA is trying to get doc first and worrying about kg and pp later

  • kobe

Celtics should fire Danny and hire Larry Bird

    • Rhyso

Trade KG + Lee/Terry for Gasol in a 3 team deal to receive a few draft picks from a team receiving Gasol. Then separately trade Pierce to the Mavs for expirings and a pick where he then gets bought out and signs with the Lakers. D’antoni is then fired and Doc is hired. Screw over the Clips and salvage this mess.
