Mock draft: Gorgui Dieng has a defensive reputation

Chuck - Red's Army May 24, 2013 Celtics News, Draft 15 Comments

Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix has the Celtics selecting Lousiville’s Gorgui Dieng in his initial mock draft:

With or without the core of Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce — two players who may not be in Boston when training camp opens — the Celtics need size. Dieng, 23, has a defensive reputation (he was the Big East Defensive Player of the Year last season after swatting 2.5 shots and pulling down 9.4 rebounds per game), but his offensive game is better than most think. Dieng is a strong passer with a decent mid-range jump shot. Scouts also say he is one of the best screen men in the draft.

With all due respect to Shavlik Randolph, DJ White, Chris Wilcox and Fab Melo, I endorse the selection of Dieng. He’s long, athletic and possesses a motor on the boards.

It doesn’t matter that Dieng is one of the best screen men in the draft, once a big man puts on the Celtics uniform he becomes a target for cheap illegal screen calls.

Media mock drafts have the Celtics selecting Dennis Schroeder (PG), Kelly Olynyk (C) and Michael Carter-Williams (PG).

    yes, draft another big, please.

  • eddysamson

If KG stays, we get this kid, Sully is 100%, and we keep Shav, all of the sudden we are a decent (if not good) rebounding team that can keep it up when we have to go deep in the bench.

No we’ll still suck at rebounding and blocking no one with a big frame in the centre

      • eddysamson

…Sully? He’s not super tall but he’s a big frame with a big ass and boxing out skills

        • pierce Hart

I know what your saying but Sully would get abused by a 7 footer like Perkins and KG ain’t big enough to help out in a situation like that

      • MikeABQ

Sully is a beast on the boards, and this guy has a motor as well. a big frame does not automatically translate to results, thats why fab melo was d league all year. If you watched the video, you would see this guys skills are rebounding and blocking shots- what we need. and as for size, a front court of dieng and sullinger would pretty much be same proportions of boozer/noah for the bulls and they seem to manage pretty well.

He reminds me of JJ Johnson from the 2011 draft he just doesn’t know how to move that huge frame and fit into himself.

kid is tough and he has a soft mid range touch a steal if we get him that late in the draft

  • Robert Hodgman

Jjj was a finesse 4 in the mould of antione jameson. Dieng is nothing like that. He is much stronger, a much better rebounder and shot blocker, and has a higher IQ on both ends of the floor. JJJ couldn’t play d at all, which is why he couldn’t find a spot here. Dieng is a defensive specialist.

I think there are a number of OK 7 footers here with some D. I would be happy if we took any one of them. Adams is a name that has people intrigued.

  • CoachAJ

yeah i could really happy with this kid. Another from the line of Senegalese shotblockers.
