Mock draft: Dennis Schroeder is a young Rondo

Chuck - Red's Army May 22, 2013 Celtics News, Draft 12 Comments

ESPN’s Chad Ford has the Celtics taking German point guard Dennis Schroeder (6-2, 195) in his latest mock draft. Here’s the write up on the 19-year-old Schroeder:

Analysis: With Rajon Rondo‘s future up in the air, could the Celtics take the guy who many scouts compare to a young Rondo? Both are quick, long and have huge hands. Both play a frantic style of basketball and both have swagger. The rumors flying around Chicago were that Schroeder had a promise from a team. The Celtics seem like just the sort of team that would try to lock him down.

Pros

  • Super quick guard
  • Great speed in the open court
  • Huge wingspan for a PG
  • Excellent ball handler
  • Lethal penetrator
  • Aggressive attacking the basket
  • Solid passer off penetration

Negatives

  • Needs to add strength
  • Basketball IQ could use improvement
  • More of a scoring than passing PG

Again, with the “Rondo’s future is up in the air” commentary by ESPN. Just because Derrick Rose needed more than one year to recover from an ACL injury, that doesn’t mean Rondo won’t be healthy in the fall.

According to this scouting report, the major difference between Schroeder and Rondo appears to be that Schroeder has a “score first” mentality. I see that as a positive. The Celtics offense needs diversity.

Gonzaga’s Kelly Olynyk and Syracuse’s Michael Carter-Williams have also been linked to the Celtics in mock drafts.

Wait a sec if he’s more of a scoring PG than a passing PG…then beyond their physical traits, they are nothing at all alike.

And the fact that his Basketball IQ needs improvement.

Yeah. I’m not sure how you could compare a guys playing style to Rondo’s and then say he needs to improve his basketball I.Q. Rondo is one of the smartest guys in the league.

      Exactly.

The perfect Rondo would quit passing the ball when he should be taking the easy shot and have a better outside shot…

This draft is all over the place. Carter-Williams and Schroeder are listed anywhere from 6th overall to 20th overall. I wouldn’t put too much stock into this year’s mocks considering how even the talent level is this year outside of the top 3 or so picks.

Well, if he’s a good scorer then couldn’t be play the 1 or 2? Never hurts to have a 2 that has great handle and speed that can give Rondo a breather and mix-up our look. I think we saw with AB on the point the value of a true ball handler.

What I’m taking away from this and all the other varied mock draft positions is that there’s a steal to be had at 16

If we take a guard id like Larkin, but only with a late first round pick. Hopefully Danny can get another pick.

  • I bleed green in L.A.

Can we move up and get Alex Len? Hornets/Pelicans may want to move the pick and there were trade rumors yesterday between the two teams. Pierce, Bradley and #16 pick for Gordon, Rivers and #6 pick (Alex Len). Add Wilcox or Lee to make it fair/salaries work?

If not let try to to get Dieng at #16 or Giannis Adetokoubo, or make moves to get both.
