Recap: Throw in the damn towel

Chuck - Red's Army April 26, 2013 Gametime, Recaps 37 Comments

It’s over. The series. This season. And hopes that Paul Pierce and KG will contend for another championship.

The Knicks beat on the Celtics all night and won Game 3, 90-76. It wasn’t that close.

I know the Celtics have been an offensively challenged basketball team for years, and things took a turn for the worse when Rajon Rondo tore his ACL, but when did they lose all fundamental skills?

Like the previous two games in this series, this one was riddled with horrible entry passes, fumbled catches and blown lay-ups. One might say the Celtics are playing like a poorly coached team. I’m not saying they are poorly coached… it’s just an observation.

Paul Pierce (17 points, 6-15 FG) looked 45 years old. He and Jeff Green (a quiet 21 points, 9 rebounds) combined for 10 turnovers. Avery Bradley (2 points in 33 minutes) looked like a lost little puppy.

Doc Rivers shook up his starting line-up by starting Jason Terry (14 points) in place of Brandon Bass (3 points). A noble effort but it had zero impact.

Here’s video (courtesy CBS Sports) of the J.R. Smith throwing an elbow at Jason Terry’s head. Just a dirty play.

No team has ever come back from a 3-0 series deficit in the NBA playoffs.

Truly sad and lack of effort performance. Fumbled passes, blown layups, turnovers and horrible line-ups. It just seems like with all the energy KG and PP provided during the regular season seems gone at this point. And with Rondo, Sully, Barbosa and lack of depth is just killing the C’s.

i once had hope, now it’s all gone…. lets start thinking about next season! hopefully rondo will be ready by training camp. if so the starting five should be: Rondo, Avery, Kg, Pierce(if he stays) and Green bench: Terry, Lee, Jared (i think he should start, but who would he replace), Randolph.i’m not sure about williams and crawford. I don’t know if they fit… definitely get rid of wilcox, white, fab, and bass if you can. shop around in free agency and get some bench scorers! next season the celtics will be dangerous!!!

    • KChristainsen

So you change nothing….. Real smart

      • http://twitter.com/kgowns Tim

implying that rondo and sullinger don’t help this team. you idiot.

        • http://www.facebook.com/jake.gruber.7 Jake Gruber

Of course they would help this team because anyone would at this point. However, this team needs 1. More shooting to get floor spacing and 2. More size and 3. More general scoring. Better talent basically. Rondo would help, but to win a title this team clearly can’t rely on pierce and KG to score anymore. It’s so apparent. Very upsetting, but they’ve done a lot of amazing things in their careers and they just can no longer be called upon to do what they are being asked to do. KG needs to have a Tyson chandler-like role. I’m not sure about pierce. His game is so unique I’m not sure how he could really be a role player.

          • Bleedgreen.

Your missing the point. With rondo they don’t have to create their own shots. He will give if to them in a catch and shoot situation. Which both peirce and garnett excell at

      • afia

the difference is rondo. face it, without rondo the team is nothing. with him back everything will run smoothly

        • KChristainsen

Right, rondo will fix everything. Pretty sure rondo can’t score 25 a night.

          • afia

of course he can’t- i’m sure he’s capable. rondo facilitates the offense, so that fixes a lot and allows everybody to go back to their true role. the celtics haven’t been able to do that in a while, doc has changed the line ups so much. rondo delivers the ball right where the players need it. bradley can go back to focusing on defense and cutting and that helps. i think having him back will be super helpful

          • http://twitter.com/kgowns Tim

pretty sure he can score 18-20 in the playoffs and create ten baskets………….

          • Rhyso

He does in a way. He averages what 11 assists per game? That has a hand in at least 22-25 points. Plus he scores maybe 12ppg. Rondo makes Garnett still effective on the offensive end with pick and pops, likewise with Bass.

    • CoachAJ

And team has ever come back, we won’t buck history either, but we are in a much better starting place than the last time this happen to the franchise. AB is a full player now, Green has shown that he can score in bigtime bunches and defend opposing sf. And. RR. Our pg that is better most want to admit. Add in the rest to the younguns, and we still have a competitive squad that can grow together. I do hope Shavand TWill get good deals. If we can figure out the five spot we can be right back. Wishing the three vets much love in their retirement.

      • Bleedgreen.

Sign and trade bass and fab for gortot. He is a free agent this summer

        • CoachAJ

Don’t think PHX is going for that okie dokie trade. They’re going to want much more for their starting center regardless of whether he is happy there or not. Plus they are due for a new GM and Head Coach. So the atmosphere might change in his favor.

          • Bleedgreen.

Yea but he is a FA anyway and PHX is going no where and they problem what more than just letting him walk

  • http://twitter.com/kgowns Tim

You truly are delusional if you think the Celtics had a chance of contending without Rondo.

We were already struggling with Rondo.

    • Rhyso

Can’t blame people after witnessing last years playoff performance, they have time and time again proved the doubters wrong.

      • http://twitter.com/kgowns Tim

with a somewhat healthy big 3 and rondo. this team was far different.

  • KChristainsen

Gotta look ahead to next year now. Assuming pierce and garnett are playing for us next year, they need to come off the bench. Rondo, Bradley, green, sully, and some scrub to play the 5 is our starting 5. We need to rebuild.

  • Romeo

Hello offseason, kg please don’t go

  • Rhyso

This has been a frustrating series to watch, i still feel like the Knicks haven’t done anything it’s just more of what the Celtics didn’t do. To me it just seems like a huge mental block, as if the role players were too scared to mess up they legitimately try to score. Green has shown he can get to the rim at will, but chooses not to (except for some point in the 3rd).

Lack of aggression driving to the hoop, careless passing, bad floor spacing, Celtics could have made this a series if anyone besides Pierce and KG decided to take the team on it’s back (looking at Green and Terry). But realistically, the season ended when Rondo went down anyway…

  • Bleedgreen.

Ok since no me has mentioned it. Lets talk about the draft. I say if pp and kg stay then draft guibi dieng. He is the best role player in our range. His defensive intensity will greatly relive some if the weight on kg.s shoulders. And it gives us a legitimate shot blocker. He is not ball dome mint and can be used on offense much like bass or Wilcox in pick and rolls or spot up midrange. If kg and pp leave. Draft Giannis adelkoble(I can’t spell his name) he has a much higher ceiling and is more likely to become a star. I mean do you know any role player who is 6-10 with a 7-3 wingspan that plays SF in the nba. He will develop into a star. It won’t work If we have him with pp kg AND rondo and jg. Rondo and pp and Giannis all need the ball in their hands to suceed. Also with kg and jg and pp and rondo and Giannis. There’s not enough shots for all of them. But if kg and pp retire we have a new young core of rr(28) jg(26) Giannis(18) sullinger(21) and maybe jcraw(25) if he can find a defensive game. We might not be contendes the next year but maybe we could pull a move to get gortot in a sign and trade with bass and fab and maybe a pick. Hey we could even trade JET for anyone who doesn’t suck. Sound good?

    • Rhyso

For memory there were teams at the deadline who would have taken Terry, but i don’t think they were offering anything. Still could be worthwhile to free up the MLE and get under the luxury tax.

      • Bleedgreen.

Yea he would’ve had value that we could’ve gotten a good ole player for. We should’ve traded him at the deadline. Now we would have to include a pick or wilcox

  • Christopher Jones

    …Smoove next season?

  • Roy Sanchez

Fellas.. The ride has been amazing. This may be it but damn it was amazing. So happy to have seen KG as a celtic. So happy to have seen pierce grow as an all time great celtic. I love the celtics

  • LA Flake

I will go to my grave wondering why Doc would go far away from what worked during the season and suddenly decided to play guys who haven’t played together much in a critical playoff game.

Next season will really suck unless Danny can pull off a miracle.

  • JB

The question is what do Wyc Grousbeck and Steve Pagluica do next?! It’s not only the roster that needs a shake up. Too many yrs of the same pattern of problems. Time to also evaluate the personnel in the front office. To be blown out in a playoff series ….a lot of questions need to be asked.
What does the Celtics Organization have left to persuade PP and KG to stay after this mess. Feel sad they had to end it this way. It wasn’t suppose to happen like this.

  • JB

“Looking like a poorly coached team”…. Wonder if Doc / players became too dependent on Rondo calling the plays on the floor. Wonder how much Rondo carried this team.

    • http://twitter.com/SciencePope Eric Krasnauskas

Doc has never been an offensive wizard. There’s a reason this team emphasizes defense so much…it’s that they can’t score so they need to bring opponents down to their level.

  • kobe

retire Diva Pierce and KG their NBA careers are over

    • Caterpillar from Italy

seems like you’re not doing any better, aren’t you?
Better worry about Kobe, Nash and Clownface.

  • Caterpillar from Italy

    Yep, it’s over.

Bur let’s still be classy and give the deserved respect and farewell to Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, the next one might be the last game they’re gonna play in a Celtic uniform. Closing the story with a sweep? Yes, a cruel sport can do that.

To be honest, I hope the next one will be the last game in a green jersey for a lot of people. Avery Bradley showed he’s no more than a mediocre player, everything more than a 6-9 minutes usage isn’t worth it in a good contending team; Jeff Green is my biggest disappointment because he CAN play, but his mental strength is just not there. And then Lee, Bass, Wilcox, and all the others can say goodbye, close the door when they leave end c ya; please make sure Jason Terry doesn’t step in Boston anymore for any reason.
C’mon Celtics, the future began yesterday.

  • forever_green

    Sad day in Celtics nation.

Hurts to much to talk about it right now.

  • Double P

This team needs to be blown up in the offseason and I think Danny now knows it. He and the rest of Celtic nation have been holding out hope we could put it together for a playoff run but it’s obvious they don’t have the talent to compete and its staring Danny in the face. You gotta hope KG retires and then you either buyout Paul or try and trade him to a contender for some talent or cap relief.. I’d also look long and hard at trading anyone but Rondo. You need to find a way to get some high end talent to pair with Rondo moving forward. Avery and Sully for Demarcus Cousins sure looks like a good deal now. Avery is so overrated the guy is a scrub, Terry was a complete bust, Bass competes but hes too small we need size. Green is very inconsistent but I think he would make a good third option with Rondo and a star.. Should be a very interesting offseason

    • Bleedgreen.

Bradley has been very good on defense but were asking him to do things he’s never needed to do. Namely bring the ball up(he has to be one of the worst ball handlers for his position.) and run the pick and roll

    • kobe

Danny has been clueless for years, I don’t think he knows it.
