Recap: Celtics drop 3rd straight, lose to Mavs in Dallas

KWAPT March 22, 2013 Gametime, Recaps 22 Comments

Brandan Wright had his way in the paint all night, scoring a season-high 23 points to lead Dallas to a 104-94 win over the C’s. Celtics front court struggled (to put it nicely) all night on the pick and roll allowing Wright to slam his way to 11 of 16 shooting. Dirk Nowitzki put in 22 and Vince Carter added 19 off the bench. Boston crept back in this game late in the 4th, but a failed Pierce entry pass to KG with 1:04 left sealed the deal. Celtics had plenty of opportunities to make this a game, but missed lots of easy layups and did not get to the loose balls. Speaking of KG, he was one of the lone bright spots tonight, going for 16 and 12. Along with Bass (on offense anyway) who had a double-double himself of 16 and 11. Pierce had a quiet 16 points, 10 of them coming in the 2nd half. Truth also notched 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Jeff Green was the only bench player in double-figures with 10. Courtney Lee landed awkwardly on an opposing player’s foot late in the game tonight. Doc said postgame Lee told him “I’m good..” Celts officially saying Lee has sprained left ankle and is questionable for tomorrow.

The Green:

  • Kevin Garnett was a beast on the boards, and in the paint. KG had 16 points and 12 boards.
  • Brandon Bass had a solid night of 16 points, 11 rebounds (7 offensive) and went 8 of 8 from the line

The Gross:

  • Jordan Crawford had a quick burst in the 4th, but his 3 of 11 shooting including 1 of 5 from deep hurt us. I’m interested to hear your thoughts on Doc going with him once again at crucial points in the 4th.
  • Celtics pick and roll defense. Atrocious this evening.
  • Kills me to do this, but Bradley/Green combo. They were a combined 9 of 23 from the field with 6 turnovers. Both were virtually non-factors. Granted, each were in foul trouble most of the game
  • Jet’s “big return” was a let down. 3 of 9 from the floor, 0 of 2 from downtown for 8 points in 21 minutes.

The Greenlights:

The Grid: (quick stats)

  • Celtics never led in this game
  • Teams combined attempted 55 free-throws
  • Mavs scored 16 second chance points and 44 points in the paint
  • Celtics have lost last 4 on the road

Boston now heads to Memphis for second game of this road back to back. Tip-off against the Grizz tomorrow is at 8pm EST.

Well… glad I didn’t bother to pick up tickets at the last minute to this game. I can’t fathom why JG isn’t starting over BB. Good halftime show by John. Better than if I had made the drive into town for it.

  • Chulinho

I just don’t understand how this team is so bad on the road…

    • Brick James

      Home cookin’

      • Chulinho

What ever it is, they need to bring some on these road trips.

    • forever_green

Maybe they have been riding in that RV with Van Gundy and Mike Breen, that would kill anybody’s mojo.

      • Chulinho

        Lol.

Says the schmuck who’steam just lost to the Wizards.

Avery Bradley has slowly changed his game lately. He’s gambling a lot more, both on o and d. I hope he stays humble.

Noticed that AB does not quite seem like himself too..

      • Caterpillar from Italy

Don’t know. But I’m pretty much shure rs for the Celtics is emotionally over. They’ll be coasting til the end, 7 or 8 seed. Granted.

  • forever_green

Hard to make sense of this one, just disappointing, Jet was terrible and Green disappeared again. The lack of one other quality big man is killing this team.

    • LA Flake

green didn’t disappear. crawford just decided that he was our no. 1 option off the bench and doc just sat back and watched.

      • forever_green

Your right on Crawford, but Green needs to stay aggessive, it seemed at times that he got the ball and wasn’t sure what to do and passed it…maybe he’s worried about running the play called, IDK…or just wanted to get the ball to Crawford, lol.

      • ShawnCVD

Celtics missed EVERYTHING in 1st half and wasn’t much better in 2nd. Blown lay ups was the theme of the night . When nothings working why not scout Crawford? Doc wants him to freelance and create his own shot. his d was alright too. love it or hate it we need the guy for.his occasional breakout nights

  • Brick James

My thoughts on Jordan Crawford: he sucks.

I’d rather have Barbosa with one leg amputated.

As much as the fanbase liked to hate on him (for reasons still unbeknownst to be), we could definitely use Collins right now too.

    • LA Flake

yup. was thinking the same thing re collins.

      • ShawnCVD

People here acting like Boston could roll with a 3 guard rotation. What about foul trouble? Injuries? Rest so the “pitbulls” can hustle at a high level knowing they’ll get a breather? I loved Barbos, who sadly went down,a but let’s not pretend that Collins could end a scoring drought (which has been 1of Boston’s biggest problems)

        • Brick James

AB0, Lee, TWill, JET – 4 guards without Crawford.

We traded away our “biggest” big for a guy that looks like he belongs playing street ball. No one is saying Collins was ever a scoring threat. But our rebounding and inside game is definitely an issue. Collins had more of an effect than shows up on the stat sheet.

    • Caterpillar from Italy

“Gollum” can still be useful, but Doc is using him too much and in the wrong moments: against Miami in the fourth, for example, I was shocked he took away JG on fire and left Crawford doing nothing on the floor. JG came back in the game too late and in a complete different momentum switch.

  • Nate Bishop

Let’s be real – the last two games were extremely discouraging. There’s not much cause for optimism right now.
