Recap: Celtics hold on for 107-102 OT win at the Garden

KWAPT March 9, 2013 Celtics News, Gametime, Recaps 16 Comments

Sorry for such a late recap folks. Our staff are tied-up tonight, either travelling for Sunday’s big bash, or getting things prepared for it. I was actually at the Garden and just got to work myself, but wanted to log-on real quick & give you all a place to talk/comment on/be excited about tonight’s win. I have not seen any of the highlights yet, with the exception of a few YouTube clips, but here’s my quick take. It looked at times like the C’s were going to have a somewhat easy time of it tonight, but they had trouble taking care of the ball, and their 15 turnovers + Josh Smiths’ 31 points meant yet another OT game. But that’s where we saw the resolve of the 2012-13 Celtics rear it’s head. Behind huge shots from Pierce, Jet and Jeff Green, Boston pulled-off another gutsy win. Granted, if the C’s took better care of the ball and better care of the paint at times, maybe this game doesn’t go to OT, but it did. But hey, we won, and what a great win it was. Despite screaming at the refs’ lack of calls for Boston in the 4th, and getting frustrated with Boston’s defensive “mistakes” late, I thoroughly enjoyed this game/win. Once again, guys like Garnett and Pierce reminded us just why we love them. Boston extends it’s win streak to 5 games, is 7 games above .500 (34-27) and 6th in the Eastern Conference playoff seedings.

The Green:

  • Paul Pierce scored 27 points on 10 of 16 shooting and buried a huge trey with 1:37 left in OT
  • Jet had 19 points, but more importantly was 3 of 4 from downtown, 6 of 6 from the line and sealed the win with a clutch long ball with 35 seconds left in the game
  • Jeff Green struggled a bit offensively, with 12 points on 5 of 11 from the floor, but he nailed a huge three-pointer in OT (with a little help from Red), had a big steal on Smith late & his dunk in the 4th got the energy back in the building.
  • KG had yet another solid night, putting in 17 points to go with 8 boards

The Gross:

  • C’s turned the ball over 15 times
  • C.Lee struggled with 4  points and 3 turnovers in 28 minutes

What an awesome block by Jeff Green…Really happy for the kid. He’ll never be able to fill Pierce’s shoes, but he could be an all star in the next couple year. Working with KG is the best thing to happen to Greens career. Go C’s!

    • I bleed green in L.A.

He can’t fill Pierce’s shoes, but I think he has filled Perk’s shoes. He’s impressing me more and more.

Refs were awful! KG gets MUGGED by Smith in regulation. 2 free throws taken away from C’s in a game that goes to overtime.

That’s okay though, Boston wins regardless.

RE J Green. No sh!t he’s better than Perk. I’m so happy he’s playing well and look forward to continued growth as his recovery from surgery continues.

I love Jeff, I love he’s building confidence and enthusiasm among fans.
He’s gonna be huge for this team in one year.

Bad night for Bradley, though: Teague made him softer way too much.

Every time I see Bass on the court it makes me wanna puke.

    • Larry Legend

Cannot believe how much bass has regressed…he’s terrible. Great win for the boys, more difficult than it had to be, but celts rolling…Terry good down stretch, but he’s frustrating…misses a layup at end of half, couple other point blank jumpers…hope he finds his game come playoff time. Oh and Paul pierce has some big time nuts..but that isn’t news, been doing it a long time.

This team has IT. What do I mean by “it”? I don’t have a clue, but they have it.

  • zippittyay

Add Jeff Teague to Avery’s pick list. Can we get a complete list of his victims so we know has yet to humiliate?

  • NateB

How about that play toward the end of regulation where Josh Smith threw Green out of the way with one hand, and then was wide open for a layup? Refs were complicit in the game ending up in OT; great win though. Good to see Terry play well.

    • piecz

Teague got 26/9 shooting 50% and 3 TO so I don’t think he was abused by AB in this game but probably we’ll be on Bradley’s list.

      • zippittyay

Just the list of point guards who have had their dribble stolen from them before they even got the chance to get the offence going and then got to watch Avery score an open layup on the other end. There must be about a dozen by now.

        • piecz

          my mistake

    • ShawnCVD

forgot to list that one above. Refs were awful .
