Recap: Pierce, Green help Celtics smother Warriors

Chuck - Red's Army March 1, 2013 Gametime, Jeff Green, Paul Pierce, Recaps 20 Comments

Thanks to some aggressive defense by Avery Bradley and some creative defensive zones, the Celtics put the clamps on Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors tonight.  Boston held Curry to 6-22 FGs and the Warriors to just 34% shooting for the game. The 94-86 win is Boston’s 8th straight at the Garden.

The Green: As I predicted in the game preview, Paul Pierce (26 points, 9-15 FG, 8 rebounds, 4 assists) came out with a vengeance. He was very aggressive and attacked the basket (see just 3 three-point field goals). He had some troubles making passes (7 TOs), but overall Pierce was fantastic.

Jeff Green (18 points, 8-13 FG, 5 rebounds, 3 blocks) carried the offensive burden in the 4th quarter (10 points). He took a hard fall on his hip and elbow but returned and played magnificently.

Chris Wilcox (8 points, 4-4 FG, 7 rebounds and +20) played his ass off tonight.

The Gross: Kevin Garnett shot 2-10 and was a team low -11. He did haul in 13 rebounds and passed Hakeem Olajuwon for 11th on the all-time rebounding list.

Jason Terry (2-11) was even worse than KG.

The officiating on Avery Bradley continues to be a farce. Bradley was forced to sit most of the 2nd half after collecting his 4th and 5th fouls early in the 3rd quarter. At some point, league officials will get the memo that this kid plays aggressive, foul-free defense.

Greenlights:

The Truth goes coast-to-coast and finishes with the dunk

Paul Pierce and-1

The Grid:

  • Jordan Crawford (5) had more rebounds than Brandon Bass (4)
  • Bass had more assists (3) than the entire Warriors bench (2)
  • DJ White and Shavlik Randolph collected DNP-CDs
  • David Lee had 19 rebounds
  • The C’s 8 game home winning streak ties their longest reg season home streak over the past 4 seasons

Pierce missing the all-star game was a blessing. So rejuvenated. Now he gets another 3 days to rest before yet another road back-to-back. The team defense was the key tonight though. During those awful scoring droughts, our defense was the only thing that kept GSW from opening-up any kind of significant lead. Other than 9-0 run to start the 3rd, we contained them pretty well. Wilcox crashed the boards a lot tonight, but was unfortunately doing it alone most of the time. Hats off to Green. Kid came-up big in the 4th and enabled us to pull-away just enough. He was 4 of 7 and shot 57% in 4th Q.

Jeff Green almost got injured but he came back and played great to help us win the game. I’m a Green fan. This guy can play and brings a different dimension to our offense: he attacks the basket relentlessly and gets fouled a lot.

Big win for us tonight…Hawks and Nets lose…which makes us just 2 games back from the 4th, 5th, and 6th seed. On to the next one.

Jordan Crawford will now officially replace Rondo as the team easiest love/hate player! Love when he makes the ridiculously difficult shots he takes and hate him when he doesn’t! It’s interesting to have a gunslinger on a team that plays such a structured offense.

Boston now has It’s own JR Smith.

The guy us super herky jerky.

I liked his recklessness. The 2nd unit could use a loose canon like that. Better than having no offense capacity…

Yeh he’s Eddie House/Nate Rob 2.0. I love having a guy like that on the team that can hit ridiculous shots and get us out of sticky situations. It’s going to be infuriating at times, but I think he’ll help more than hurt us.

Without seeing DJ or Randolph play I still want to say it seems like despite the injuries, we are back to being a deep team. I feel like Twills, while not being used much, can play up to par when needed and you can see Doc is already trusting Jcraw keeping him out there for the 4th. I am really interested to see the 2 new guys play, though. Its funny, we are basically back to being that super-deep 5-guard team we started with.

That’s why we would have beaten the heat in the playoffs last year if Bradley was healthy. His defense is stainless. Now he can play wade and we can double team labron.

  • Reggie35RIP

AB did a great job of shutting down Curry. He didn’t play much in the second half because of foul trouble. But his defense on Curry in the first half was a really important factor in not letting him get into a rhythm.

Also I think that’s 3-4 games in a row he’s picked up the opposing teams PG full court and gotten a steal at half court for a dunk/layup.

Lee and Green also played well. Green got off to a slow start, but got things going in the second half.

    Good win.

I don’t hear any more complaints about Danny trading Perkins. Hmmm! Maybe he did make the right decision when he traded a guy with heart but limited skills who refused the best offer the Celtics could make at the time for a guy with tremendous skills and a great heart.:-) At least after the surgery.;-)

    • Larry Legend

Jeff green was the best player in the deal…the celts got the best player period. Perk is the overrated Celtic ever…not exaggerating. I appreciated his toughness and the role he played, but goddamn do celtics fans over-emphasize his importance. No hands, couldn’t jump, no offense…tough defender, physical presence that’s it. Jeff Green has earned his money the last two months…been really good. It’s not just his offense either, this guy can be a shut down defender. So athletic, and long. He’s more confident now…it’s oozing out of him. Happy for the guy, hope he has turned the corner. He makes celts so much better and so much more dynamic offensively. Bradley too. Bradley on wade, Green on Lebron, let PP and KG do their thing…roll the ball out and let’s go!!!!

How can i argue with larry legend? I can’t really. Jeff looks like he’s starting to live up to his potential and is starting to make DA look good. That said, we overvalued perk because we loved him! That doesn’t mean jeff isn’t a better player. We just missed what perk brought to the table. A great team player with toughness. With dwight in the west, it was for the best. Now lets go catch the nets and knicks!

        Jeff Green {before & after} Rondo went down…

        Before : 9.6 PPG .427% FG
        After : 15.0 PPG .522% FG

        Draw whatever conclusions you wish

        • ShawnCVD

Here’s one – Jeff Green was coming off frigging heart surgery. Last night Gorman mentioned how Green’s DR said his recovery would be a full year. The guy is tremendous right now and Rondo’s involvement cannot be determined definitively.

      • Dk

Anytime you have the best record in the league and making your third title run with te same starting five you have to make a trade to break that up.

Snarkiness aside, I think the issue everyone has with the trade is that Ainge sacrificed immediate title run for future. Yes Green is more talented than Perk but its taken us 2+ years later for the investment to pay off. I’d have much rather rolled the dice with that 2011 team and then worked out a trade in offseason if perk dIdnt want to sign.

I still say these guys are not playing better because Rondo is gone, they have just gotten use to the system, the plays, the coaching, this is where they were last year with Rondo, I just hope J.T. Is more consistent in the playoffs!

    • ShawnCVD

plus 1 . The team was overhauled from last year. Chemistry takes time

  • coachaj

As a huge JG fan I am really pleased with how he is progressing and moving forward with his career. Coach Thompson said great things about him when got him back, and I am loving it come to fruition. Go Green.

  • OlSkool1972

Keep it going Jeff. Zach Lowe and the rest of the people still complaining about he’s overpaid can stick it.
