Derrick Rose can’t dunk, might not play this year

Nine months after surgery to repair a torn ACL, Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose still can’t dunk a basketball and is unsure of his return date:

“I really don’t know,” he said. “I’m feeling good, but like I said, if it’s where it’s taking me a long time and I’m still not feeling right, I don’t mind missing this year.”

Rose’s told USA Today Sports on Monday afternoon that he was still “far away” from returning and wouldn’t come back until he was “110 percent.” Rose did acknowledge late Wednesday night the decision to play is his and he would listen to his inner circle of trusted associates and Bulls’ personnel.

Rose, who injured his knee in the first game of the Eastern Conference playoffs on April 28 and had surgery on May 12, admitted he is still struggling with gaining his explosion back. The next step?

“Being able to dunk,” he said. “I can’t dunk, man. I know if I can dunk off stride, I know I’ll be out there playing, but I can’t.”

Celtics fans who think Rajon Rondo is going to bounce back onto the court in 6 months need to read this story.

Yes, I understand every injury is different and everyone’s body heals differently, but these injuries are no joke.

Just sayin’…

Knowing Rondo he’ll probably lie and say he’s healthy just to rush back for training camp. But I hope both players have speedy recovery and healthy futures.

Bodies heal differently so a time table shouldn’t be set on another person (whether it’s AP or Rose).

I wonder if he had a setback because on the Chicago blog a few wks ago Jimmy Butler was talking about how Rose dunked and looked like he wasn’t injured..hmm

different injuries and style of play. rondo didn’t have MCL damage and rose’s was torn.

    • eddysamson

Wikipedia doesn’t mention his MCL injury, it just says ACL. I originally thought he tore both but when I checked yesterday it just said ACL.

        that’s because you’re reading wikipedia

        • eddysamson

Actually as far as I can tell, Wikipedia is correct. ALL initial reports thought he tore both, but looking in to it more no one mentions a torn MCL after the first few days of his injury, just ACL.

Perhaps he strained the MCL and tore the ACL like Barbosa.

Lol Wikipedia and Correct, should never be in the same sentence.

so prove to me its wrong.

except if you know what actually happened…. Rose completely tore his ACL and needed to be carried off the court. Rondo had a partial tear to his ACL that he actually finished playing a game on and was walking around on for 2 days without being diagnosed. COMPLETELY different injuries.

Absolutely correct – Rondo’s injury wasn’t nearly as bad. He’ll be at full strength when training camp opens – book it!

  • Derrick Rose injury was ALOT worse than Rondo’s injury, out of all the guys that went down with knee injuries, Rondo is the only I have seen, play the rest of the game, and pass shoot around on a partically torn ACL. Thats why they were saying Rondo could be ready for training camp. But no matter what these players say, they still have to pass inpections, so Derrick im sure has not been released, and the bulls are just being smart they have alot of money invested into Derrick, Derrick is the bulls future so they dont want to do anything to mess that up, 1 season is not worth his entire future. And yeah I agree Derrick must have had a set back because they had already said he would be back after all star break and now if he is not coming back until next season it must be something. Derrick actually had to have rehab before surgery as well which tells you just how bad his knee was.

Sad to hear either way. Normally this would be consisdered “good news” for C’s but since we’ve been killed by injuries thus far, and don’t realistically have a chance to compete for the Finals, its sad because I can’t bear watching the Lebron’s win another one.

  • Swissflix

I feel really bad for Rose. Sad to hear this. The explosiveness is also a big mental issue.

Rondo’s injury wasn’t as bad, but you’re right it is probably wise to keep our expectations in check and hopefully be pleasantly surprised.

2 years ago playing soccer I did a full tear of both my LCL and PCL, a partial meniscal tear and fractured part of the tibial plateau basically whole thing was as bad as a sports injury can be. But I walked around on it for 4 days before I really knew how bad it was. So these things can be person to person even when they are really bad. It took well over a year to run again after working in the weight room and pool constantly and I still don’t have a PCL so its weird but working out pretty well. But all that said it is very person to person and I think Rondo’s injury isn’t bad enough to keep him out of that 6-8 month window. Full tears and especially multiple ligaments or broken bones with it, you are talking a full year or more easy and will probably never be the same but these guys do have state of the art PT at there disposal daily so I feel like they both should come back at a high level but I do think Rose won’t have that same kind of intense cut and bounce he did before. Mentally coming back and not thinking about it is the hardest part which really comes down to personality of the person dealing with it. I think AP coming back had just as much to do with him mental make up as his physical honestly.
