Recap: Celtics throttle defenseless Lakers

Chuck - Red's Army February 7, 2013 Celtics News, Gametime, Recaps 57 Comments

Prior to tonight, I had only read about the Lakers woes. Now I can provide visual confirmation – they are awful.

The Celtics scored at will. You could count on an open 15-17 footer just about every possession. But the C’s didn’t settle. They continued the excellent ball movement (25 assists) and manhandled the Lakers, 116-95.

The Green:

How about that 3rd quarter? 37 points on 16-21 FG.

Paul Pierce was the best player on the court; 24 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, and 1 steal in 30 minutes. Just a fabulous all-around effort.

Jeff Green had 19 points and the highlight of the night. After a driving dunk, he raced the length of the court for a spectacular block at the rim on Antawn Jamison. If you can find the video, please forward along.

Avery Bradley deserves big props for his full-court harassment of Steve Nash.

The Gross:

There wasn’t much to complain about. Leandro Barbosa was the only Celtic held scoreless (0-6 FG), yet he did contribute 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal.

Greenlights:

KG surpasses 25,000 career points with turnaround jumper

Mike D’Antoni frowns…

Dantoni_medium

The Grid:

  • Jason Terry (15 points) was a game high +25
  • The Celtics lead reached a high of 32 points (103-71) in the 4th quarter
  • Fab Melo scored the first 2 points of his NBA career

CSNNE’s Sherrod Blakely has an update on Rajon Rondo’s condition. According to Rondo’s agent, the ACL tear was a partial one and Rondo could return sooner than expected. Does “sooner” mean this season? We’ll have to wait and see.

UPDATE: Danny Ainge says Rajon Rondo will not play this season, according to Kyle Draper.

Best team game I’ve seen the Celtics play in a long time. That was fun.

    • kobe

what no trade brooha ha comment today?

      • I bleed green in L.A.

I’m still for trading KG if we can get a great BIG in return, and younger and cap space and draft picks and… And if Pierce had to go to make it happen…well maybe not.

        How about this:

        http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=ap95g82

Send KG back to the Wolves to retire? Maybe we should shop Rondo?

        • Alex

I feel as if certain Celtics fans have absolutely NO CLUE how the trading system works. This isn’t a video game, bud. The other team has to see a nice return out of the trade, not just the Celtics… Trading KG for Kevin Love is like trading a good ol’ Ferrari for a updated fresher Ferrari. You think we are going to just get that in return? You think Timberwolves are just going to give up KEVIN LOVE for KG who is most likely going to play only one year after being traded?

          Yeah…

          • I bleed green in L.A.

It was kind of a joke Alex, but, Love is not happy in Minny and they will be trading him instead of getting nothing for him. We could throw in other pieces too. But “Yeah”, it’s not going to happen, so chill, I’m just posting stuff on a blog, no big deal.

      • Mike C

Kobe who? How does it feel to know that the game was officially over after only three quarters? Tell me again how the Lakers are better than the Celtics this season.

  • LebronWearsARedThong

KG only player in NBA history to have at least 25000 points, 5000 rebounds, 5000 assists, 1500 blocks and 1500 steals.

  • BRADinLA

If Rondo’s ACL injury does indeed turn out to be a partial tear it’ll be like that episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm with Shaq.

  • david

That sequence at the end of the third quarter was maybe the best moment of the season. Garden was going NUTS.

  • Highbrow

This is prob the first time I heard kg compliment Craig sager on his clothes lol

  • BRADinLA

Can’t believe I missed this freakin game! I’m in LA still at work. At leasts I get to gloat to the laker fans all around me :)

    • I bleed green in L.A.

      Yes, tomorrow will be fun

  • E,J

Ugh I knew this would somehow be spun into a “Lakers are terrible, that’s why they got blown out” thing. The Celtics are playing out of their minds right now & I for one am very proud of my team. I love this squad win, lose, or draw.

    • Chuck – Red’s Army

No spin. The Celtics played very well. I just enjoy piling on the Lakers.

      • JG

Yeah I mean the credit definitely should be given to the Celtics here. Lets not forget the lakers had come in winning 6 of 7. I’m not saying you were taking credit away from the celtics, I’m just saying its almost not worth mentioning the lakers being bad part. The Celtics, in my opinion, would have beaten just about anyone tonight.

  • DJ Kahn

Did anyone notice KG mustering as much politeness as he could when Sager asked him “what surprises him most” about the win-streak? I thought KG was going to lose it, but he pauses, collects himself and says “Repeat that?” giving himself time to figure out a non-confrontational fit-for-TV answer

    I ❤ KG

    • Stephanie

He said repeat that because it was very loud in there.

      • DJ Kahn

No way. He heard him. He was offended that anyone would be surprised that a team with this talent is winning games. The look on his face said it all.

      • kg215

Looked like a little of both lol.

        • Stephanie

No, I was there it was very loud. KG just didn’t hear the question.

          • http://www.djkahn.com DJ Kahn

No offense, but that means you didn’t see it on TV. Trust me, he heard it loud and clear.

  • RedsLoveChild

The “eruption” that started in the final 2 minutes of the 3rd quarter…felt a lot like Game 6 of the 2008 Finals.

    • Chulinho

      It’s nice to reminisce…

      • RedsLoveChild

It was pure “Deja Vu”….all that was missing was James Posey & Eddie House coming off the bench to hit back-to-back treys, immediately followed by Phil Jackson calling a “panic” time-out!

        • Chulinho

However…this game featured Sacre v. Melo. The world may never experience that again…

Seriously, I agree with you. I don’t know if they can keep this up, so I’m enjoying this while I can.

  • Chulinho

    -KG reached 25,000 career points
-A scoring battle between the Truth and the Mamba broke out in the third quarter
-Fab Melo scored his first two NBA points
-Fab Melo and Robert Sacre were on the court at the same time
    -Gino was played
-Craig Sager received a compliment about his suit from Kevin Garnett

This was just a fantastic game.

  • http://www.redsarmy.com KWAPT

F**K yeah. That 3rd quarter sequence had me on top of my seat screaming! Best bball I’ve seen from them all year. It was fantastic to watch Lakers fans scurry out of TD Garden like roaches do when the kitchen light comes on. They came into our building and beat us the last few years and I had to listen to and watch Lakers fans celebrate in our house. Well not tonight baby. Great team win. Green, KG, Pierce, Terry, Bass, AB were all great. And it won’t show-up on the stat sheet, but CLee’s defense forced Kobe into making some unbelievably tough shots. Chalk-up another W for the guys in green. Oh..and KG’s boys got him GinoTime on the night he scored his 25,000 pt. Hell yeah.

  • kdb

It eill take me a few days to come off my Celtics beat the lakers high

  • Noori

Omg that third quarter was such a pleasure to watch, the peak had to be when Pierce dropped that nasty three and started pointing to the parquet. I was going nuts!

  • stephanie

Green is really turning out to be the difference maker. It’s was his play that catapulted that CRAZY sequence in the 3rd qtr. Love it!

  • Dutchgreen

Love the Mike D’Antoni pic – the guy is such a tool. It was definitely fun being at the Garden tonight, especially getting to jump up and down at the end of the third while being surrounded by laker fans (what’s up with that though?). I was really impressed by Avery’s defense – he just wouldn’t let Nash breathe. Jeff Green was impressive too – on offense, but he had a couple of good defense possesions against Kobe as well. And congrats to KG for getting to 25000.
By the way, the C’s are 7-0 with me at the Garden, so I’m open to receiving playoff tickets ;)

  • Roy

What a sight! That was beautiful Celtics bam

  • Noori

There were a hell of a lot of Laker fans in the garden…wtf? I thought they’d all have switched into LBJ Heat jerseys by now

  • Nate

That 8 points in 49 seconds is going to be forever ingrained in my memory!

  • Justsomeffinguy

Great night to be in the Gahden!! KG made history, crowd rocked and we BEAT L.A. AGAIN!!!! Loved watching all the Faker fans throw in the towel and leave early. God I love being one of the 18,624!

    • KWAPT

Was the freaking biz-alls wasn’t it?

      • Justsomeffinguy

@KWAP: Hellz yes!! I travelled 3000 miles for this game and it was perfect!

  • Mike C

Hell Yeah! I swear, there’s nothing I enjoy more than when the Celtics destroy the Lakers. What a dominant performance tonight. Do I dare hope that this is the start of a major run leading up to the playoffs? It would be nice to be in the top 5 rather then our current eight spot. Bench has been playing great too. Totally made my day, thanks Celtics.

    • Jon with no H

      7th spot now, woohoo!

  • Caterpillar from Italy

    yesterday was “easy”.
    The day before was “ugly”.
    And so on.

We just destroyed the LAKERS (remember the Lakers?) with a perfect, great game and THAT was your recap?
Only because we’re playing without Rondo?
Yes, we’re playing without Rondo (yesterday it was on TNT, he’d probably scored a triple-double), and, for your notice, we’re doing great.

  • KGino

lets not mention any trades for the rest of the year. Appreciate or F off

    • Rawley

Trade Rondo for Cousins emmediatley and let’s win a championship this year.

      • Lakers4Life

        Immediately* :/

  • Blow it up

If Danny had any balls he would trade Peirce and KG now while stock is high before we lose 6 in a row and everyone here will be demanding a blow up.

    • Danno

      Trade them for who, exactly?

      • Larry Legend

Don’t even respond to that asshole. Celts ain’t blowing it up.

  • OlSkool1972

Doc made a good point about how it was great they still had the lead after the first quarter. The refs tried to help LA out early with all the foul calls. I was getting upset watching the Lakers keep marching to the free throw line and listening to Marv Albert and Steve Kerr pretty much spend the whole game talking about the Lakers like they were their local announcing team. Kerr also annoys me because he can’t go through one game without talking about Miami and Lebron even if they aren’t playing.

  • Reggie35RIP

Best moment was when AB stole the ball off a lazy Kobe pass, then laid it up in his face. There aren’t many things I like more than seeing Kobe getting genuinely pissed off.

Also the Green dunk, run down block, PP three sequence was just epic. Just when you thought the crowd couldn’t get any louder after the Green swat, PP hit that three. Crazy shit. Awesome moment.

  • Reggie35RIP

Also it’s pretty clear Doc and Danny know what they’re talking about with regard to Melo’s readiness to play in the league. He looked lost out there. He needs a lot more time in the D-league before he’s anywhere near ready.

  • Danno

Melo is the Brazilian Scal. The human victory cigar.

  • zippittyay

I kept waiting to see Kobe sagging 6 feet off of Rondo daring him to shoot while clogging all the passing lanes.

  • Noori

Sucks our next game is against a VERY hot Denver team right now. I guess its a good measuring stick

  • http://www.twitter.com/jdotd @JdotD

I might be reading in to this too much, but Danny never said he’s out UNTIL preseason/camp, he said he’ll be back before that , right?
So if the schedule hasn’t changed, technically on that wording he could return tomorrow.

My bet is that if we start to go deep into the playoffs, as unlikely as that might be, he starts weighing up coming back early.

    • Alex

Danny Ainge DID say Rondo will be available for the preseason camp next season.

  • Lakers4Life

Damn what a beat down that was lol.. fml
