KG on trade rumors: “I bleed green, I die green”

After practice today, the media asked Kevin Garnett about the recent trade rumor involving the Los Angeles Clippers (scroll to 2 minute mark):

“Danny made it very obvious since day one since he brought Ray and myself here to be aligned with Paul that he was going to do whatever is best for this organization and he’s always made that apparent and I’ve understood that. I bleed green, I die green, that’s what it is. It is a business, and when that crosses the path, I”ll deal with it. But trades are a part of this league. Every year you’re gonna hear certain things, if I were y’all I wouldn’t read too much into it.”

Q. Can you imagine this team without Paul Pierce?

“No. No, I won’t.”

I’m not ready to part with KG. Not. Even. Close.

Doc Rivers discussed the new look Raptors, the “silly” trade rumors (1:40 mark) and Rajon Rondo’s impending surgery:

“When I wake up in the morning and hear a trade rumor that I haven’t heard in my office, that’s silly.

I heard one report, I honestly did, that me, Chauncey, Kevin and Paul had dinner. I was like, I wish I had known about it because I would have made them pay and I could have had a free dinner. But it’s just silly what goes on.”

Doc is referring to this blurb in the Herald’s Inside Track that claimed the group had dinner at Strega.

  • KG & Pierce retiring as Celtics > 1 more championship

Lol there will no more championships in Beantown as long as we have the aging inconsistancy of Paul Pierce and the softness that has taking over KG’s game. I have seen it happen once in the early 90’s and it will happen again if we continue to think with our hearts and not our heads.

      • I bleed green in L.A.

        Bingo! Lewis35 gets the win.

        • I bleed green in L.A.

I love the name on the front of the jersey, not the back. Pierce should retire a Celtic and he WILL have his number in the rafters no matter what. KG is a transplant, who raised a banner, so thank you and we won’t forget the KG era. We were close last year, so it was worth it to try again, but were not the same team this year; losing two starters in Ray and Rajon, losing our new rookie, not having a center since Perk left, Bass not as good as Baby and new guys Lee/Terry/Barbosa not geling. Done done done.

Ray left and it hurt, KG may leave and it will hurt, Pierce leaves it will really hurt, but let’s look toward the future and stop moving in older veterans. KG and Pierce are our best assests to move to a contender which is good for them and gets us younger, free’s up money for good free agents, and gives me hope again-I don’t want the teens to be like the 90’s.

          • eddysamson

Yeah, no shit. Why now and not the summer though?

          • KGino

also, ray allen was not a starter.. so we did not lose 2 starters..

      • KGino

I just don’t get it.. you guys admit we will be worse off than we are now if we trade KG & Pierce.. yet you think taking steps backwards will instantaneously make us title contenders.. interesting logic.

If we get rid of them now or later, it’ll still be YEARS before we make it back to the finals. So since it will take years anyways, why not let them retire in green with class? You guys really can’t handle watching one more year of bar-fights and grit and balls and competitive fire, even if you know it won’t result in a ship? You’d rather watch us struggle to get a low playoff seed next year?

Wouldn’t you rather enjoy these two CELTIC GREATS swan songs, and see what All Star free agent we can sign with their $ when they retire?

I don’t see rebuilding or “blowing it up” as a quicker path to a championship, and I honestly don’t get why anyone does.

        • TNCeltic

KGino, you read my mind. What he said. 🙂

      • kobe

90’s what are a hundred come on grand pa! it’s 2013 time for your meds

    • KGino

I’m with DJ Kahn.. and I’m not thinking with just my heart.

Just because we trade away P & KG doesn’t guarantee a Championship.. in fact it sets us backwards, not forwards.

You guys can think trading them now is a good idea, but look at it like this.. say we can trade KG for butler/bledsoe and Pierce for Gasol.. two trades we’ve heard much about. Did we really just get better?? NO. Well, that’s the value for those 2 right now… and theres no way in hell were more likely to win a championship with that roster.

So idk how you can say letting them go is gonna make us championship contenders all of a sudden.. the way I see it, with Lebron & Durant in their primes, we’re gonna need a hell of a lot more than what we can get for P & KG at this moment.

So, rather than jumping the gun and upsetting half the fan base while getting SHIT in return.. wouldn’t it be smarter to wait til the off season?

Or better yet, let them retire and offer a max contract to an available free agent that year? And become INSTANT contenders again?

You people need to think with YOUR heads.

      • Will

We will obviously be a worse team now but that is why it is called rebuilding. We’re not winning a title and they both likely retire after this disappointing season so if there is a good deal for them you take it. I don’t think Butler and Bledsoe is that deal or Gasol.

        • KGino

yea.. so my point is why bother taking steps backwards if we don’t have to? We don’t need to RE-build.. we have a solid core in RR AB & JS.. JG and CLee are nice young pieces as well… we can BUILD ON TOP OF this solid foundation.

If they retire at the end of the year, we will be able to take steps forward with the millions of dollars left over from their contracts by adding GREAT free agents on top of what we already have… whereas trading them mid year only gets us their current value in return (which isn’t good if current value means butler/bledsoe/gasol).

    • Matt W

Totally agreed. I’d rather go down with my heroes than try to win with someone else. Remember how good an idea it seemed to revamp the Red Sox? That worked awesome.

  • LA Flake

But..but…but we can get CARON BUTLER, y’all!

    • KGino

these people man… they just don’t get it.

  • WinstonSalems

Gotta love Doc. He could bullshit his way out of anything. Clearly, there was a discussion about KG to the Clippers.

    • Actually, there clearly wasn’t.

“no trade talks have taken place between the teams.”

      • Will

There probably wasn’t a formal offer of any kind but you would be joking yourself if you thought they haven’t talked at all.

        • kg215

Going by that logic there have been talks about Lebron/Durant too, cause you know “you would be joking yourself if you thought they haven’t talked at all” also applies to those guys. Danny isn’t the only GM that will talk about every single player and every single scenario. Doesn’t mean anything is going to happen, it means something when we see David Aldridge or Adrian Woj. saying the trade is pending or done.

  • Caterpillar from Italy

Standing ovation for my man KG.

  • That Clippers deal is such a joke. I don’t expect Blake Griffin in return, but for Butler and Bledsoe… PASS.

  • ALEX

  • JimmyG

I’d make the trade if we were getting back a fair amount, but this is a joke. I’d expect all other potential trades to be equally stupid as well.

  • Aristotle33

Would you trade Russell, Hondo, Bird, Hell no!

You don’t trade KF and Pierce!!!

  • terlo

THANK F**K!! (sighs) that rumour eating me up

  • NP

trade KG for Bledsoe and Bulter that means the C’s cave for the Lottery, don’t know if any of you pay attention to college ball but this isn’t going to be that good of a lottery, much worse then last year and it didn’t live up to the hype. In any trade for KG you have to get a good big in return, Paul as well should be traded for a forward, a big time scorer, or big even though I think Bledsoe could be great and worth acquiring it just doesn’t seem like the best fit unless they want to unload Rondo as well (who I would have rather seen go). KG to me is more important to this team right now then Pierce but the fact is very few teams if any will give equal value for these guys. Perennial all stars aren’t just sitting there in the lottery ready to go. The Celtics have to transition not “blow it up” that mentality doesn’t make any sense. Blow it up for the next Boston big three sure that would be great but I don’t see them standing around anyplace. It will never happen but Pierce for Pau would be really interesting. I just appreciate watching Paul KG play they both still play with so much heart and pride, this team doesn’t have to be a championship team for me to watch them only competitive and they are still competitive and will be as long as a transition is done in the right way out of this era.

Ainge will trade both KG & PP.

Ainge painted himself into a corner a few years ago…when he revealed that he told Red it was a mistake in not trading Bird, McHale, etc.

His way of now “saving face” would be to trade KG & PP. Ainge is an ultra-competitve guy, and will never allow himself to look like a hypocrite by hanging onto those two.

Ray Allen`s departure does not count…he left Boston to accept an offer only worth 1/2 as much as the Celtics offered.

    • kg215

It’s already too late on that one. If Ainge was true to what he said back then he would have traded KG+Pierce+Ray 2 year ago.

  • Swissflix

On another note, i love Molly in the vid, at 2:50. just saying.

  • Will

The last few years Danny and Doc have danced around saying anything about trades and they happen abruptly with no previous points. I think there could be a deal done with the Clippers but it is not the one being reported.

  • Quest

The Celtics revolving door is non ending. Would be nice to go through 1-2 seasons with some more stability. Added nine players lost 2 and now chatter about trading 2.

  • kobe

Chauncey Billups is gong to Boston i call it first!!!

    • kobe

You heard it from me first!

Lets just get Delonte West and Kenyon Martin instead of trading KG and PP

  • Lewis35

Seen it once, heard it all before from fans and then during the glory days of Kevin Gamble and Dino Radja (wink wink) celtics fans were no where to be found. Keep the old guys enjoy a couple years of mediocracy instead of trying to rebuild now. Bledsoe is a great up and comer ESPN ranked top 25 players under 25yrs of age and not a head case like our PG.

  • mike

I don’t care if Garnett gets traded he will always be a Celtic to me. One of the greats.
