Rajon Rondo’s insane pre-game routine

John - Red's Army (@RedsArmy_John) January 15, 2013 Celtics News, Rajon Rondo 9 Comments

Jason Terry… who I think is auditioning for an ESPN or NBA TV job with every interview he does (and I love it) dished on some teammates for ESPN.  His story about Rondo’s pregame routine is insane.

His routine is long-winded and it lasts all the way through tip-off. It starts in the back hallway. He runs down a corridor and he throws the ball to our team chaplain, who throws it back. Then [Rondo] runs out into a circle, high-fives the whole team and then he does the layup lines for five minutes.

“Then he will stand under the goal and Paul Pierce will shoot every ball on the rack from half court. Rondo will catch four balls at one time and then after that, it’s just amazing — one pass off the backboard to KG, one bounce pass to Paul Pierce and then he throws it all the way up to the scoreboard and Jeff Green finishes with an alley-oop.

“It’s every game, even road games. I have no idea how he started it; I’m new to the team. I was still going through layup lines and I almost got hit with one of those balls in the head. I wasn’t aware that’s what they were doing. It threw me off.

Rajon is a weird dude.  I know a lot of us want to pretend to either (a) know him or (b) know how he should be acting.  We know neither.  I’m not sure anyone can understand the mind that comes up with this routine before games.

That’s not even his full routine. If you watch what he does after the national anthem and the announcement of the starters, it flows into his whole routine.

Not only is he now in the middle of the circle with Paul Pierce when the team huddles around everyone after they announce the starters (Which is a big step, it has been Pierce and only Pierce that everyone has huddled around for the past 9 to 10 years – not even KG broke into that circle).

Then Rondo will give everyone on the bench, including all the assistant coached a pound. He’ll then meet KG over at the announcers table and get…something (maybe his finger guards with the #9 on it) while KG puts the powder on his hands. Rondo will then go onto the court, 5 five the other team, go back to the bench and an assistant coach will hand him his mouth guard, then he’ll come back on the court ready to go

We’ve seen this video a million times already– give it a rest, or go start your own site to vilify Iverson

the other game Rondo juggled the ball with his knees after the opening tip off. I know he always does something (there was a video posted here that put together clips of things like that….i.e. bouncing ball off his head) but I was surprised he got away with that. Not sure if it is technically allowed (travel/kick ball? or neither), but I wouldn’t be surprised if he let the ref know ahead of time, or he just figured the refs wouldn’t call it anyways if it really was against the rules….kind of like the times where players step over or on the line before in-bouding the ball after a made shot, but because it doesn’t impact the game, its not worth blowing the whistle. It’s the only one of those “tip off moves” that made me wonder, so if anyone knows for sure one way or the other, leave a comment.

It isn’t a violation for a player to head the ball.

I’m waiting for a Barbosa header for an assist.

I want to see this pre-game ritual on video. Someone try to record this please!

I’ve seen it every game (I have season tickets). I can try to record it and post it here.
