Recap: Rondo-less C’s struggle to keep up with Warriors

John - Red's Army (@RedsArmy_John) December 30, 2012 Celtics News, Recaps 56 Comments

I’ll say this for the Boston Celtics, they didn’t give up.  They were down 20 in the third quarter, but they made a big run to cut it to single-digits by the 4th.  But the Celtics just couldn’t keep pace with Golden State.  As Doc says, it’s a make/miss league, and the Celtics missed.. a lot… in a big loss to Golden State.

The Green

Jared Sullinger played his ass off tonight.  Just played his ass off.  Give the kid a gold star, a cookie, a trophy, and the starting PF job at this point.  Just do it.  Courtney Lee also stepped up in Rondo’s absence with 17 points on 6-13 shooting.  Before the game he said he changed his mentality with Rondo out.  I don’t want him to change it back.

The Gross

Paul Pierce was awful.  Just awful. 4-20 for 13 points awful.  Kevin Garnett got just 6 shots but also just 3 rebounds.   Jason Terry was 6-19.  Jeff Green was 2-11.  They all, minus Lee and Sully, shot like total shit.

The Greenlights

The Grid

  • Sullinger had 12 points on 6-8 shooting and 8 rebounds (5 offensive).
  • Boston won points in the paint (30-24), second chance points (17-8), and only lost fast break points 12-10.
  • Boston shot 36%.  Non-Courtney Lee starters shot 13-45.
  • The Celtics shot 5-22 (22.7%)  from 3.  Golden State hit 12-19 (63.2%).

This sucked, plain and simple.  The C’s teased us with a big 3rd quarter run, but they never could get the big stops when they needed them.

I’m going to end it here because I’m tired and I don’t want to talk about it anymore.

I’m gonna be honest, I barely watched any of the game, but looking at sullinger’s stat line, along with his previous couple games and his work ethic and mindset, the starting job should be his. I would kill to see the starting lineup in a couple years be rondo, Bradley, green, sully, and some (yet to be named) big man. I feel as though Bradley and sully may be serious parts of the celtics future and I hate listening to these d cousins trade rumors involving Bradley and sully.

    • Brick James

I did watch the game, and Sullinger had a ton of hustle and great performance overall. However, he continues to be overwhelmed by pure explosiveness that he cannot match (vertically and laterally).

  • Chris

Just went to your twitter page John, and saw your avatar. I DID see you at the Brooklyn game on Xmas. I remember when I saw you, I thought “this guy must be a serious Celtics fan in Brooklyn.” I didn’t know it was you of course, I just thought it was a die-hard Celtics fan that lived in NY.

  • Kristovar

I’ll continue to watch this team. I have loved them since literally before my memory (there are pictures of me with Red on the bench on this very website). But just…. damn. This team is ready to be blown up. Finite. It’s just over. I hate it, but…. end of the line. I wasn’t for Cousins. But why not?

    • Andrew

Completely agree blow it up and hope for a OKC result

    • Deezy

Why not? Because the celtics were a sub-500 team last year at the all star break and took the champs to 7 games and should’ve won. There are 9 new men on the roster this year and patience should be used when watching this team. We haven’t had our starting 2 guard all season. Why is everyone giving up on this team while they have exceptional talent and the best coach in the league? We’re 30 games in. Everybody take a chill pill, cousins isn’t even on the trade block yet.

      • Alex

        This.

I feel as if Kristovar is pretending to be some fan who watches the team every year when he clearly forgot that last year the C’s were in the same situation. They were a sub-.500 team at All Star break with a shit defense. Then post-AllStar, they turned it up.

If the Celtics continue to play like shit after All Star break (especially with Bradley back), THEN you can start to worry about the team.

For now, just let them figure it out. They have too many new players in the team while the teams they’ve faced have made minor changes here and there.

The defense definitely needs some major work and we hope that they will put that extra effort after the All Star break.

        • Coobs

So now we’re the NY Giants of the NBA, just waiting til after the all star break to flip a switch?

In all seriousness though, you’re contradicting yourself when you say that last year’s team was able to flip that switch, and yet your next point is that the team is filled with a whole bunch of new players. It’s a completely different squad.

I haven’t seen us improve one bit since the season started. Maybe AB will change that, but even with him back we still lack a center.

Here’s to hoping we turn it around.

        • Kristovar

I watch the team every year and remember they flipped the switch last year. But sitting around hoping we’ll decide to start being good is frustrating and not sustainable. I’ll stick with the team for my life. If we go on a losing streak after the ASG, then the team ought to be blown up. Danny needs to be putting things in motion now, though, in preparation.

Plus last year we were out of shape coming into the season with the lockout. That excuse isn’t here this season.

  • kobe

blow it up or fire Ainge, Celtics are horrible at least the Lakers is now working its way up.

    • Brick James

Blow it up? Maybe, they’re playing like shit with no end in sight.
Fire Ainge? No, not going to happen, nor should it.

  • Andrew

@kobe glad to see a laker fan have time to troll a great celtic website that has loyal fans unlike the 3 millionnew fans the gay ass lakers brought in just for bringing in an over sized bitch named Dwight Howard

    • kobe

Lakers are now gelling and will be a monster later in the season unlike the Lotter bound Cs

      • Celtic Geezer

The Lakers haven’t proved anything yet. They’ve only had wins at home in this “gelling” faze. Come back on here on February 11. So far they’ve played 14 away games and lost 9 of those. They have 14 road games and 9 home games in the next month and a half. Let’s see what their record is like then. I guaranty you it will look like old Jello that’s been sitting out of the refrigerator. My team is sucking right now but they had their streaks too this year. The Fakers probably won’t make the playoffs.

  • Andrew

Yea ill remember this at the end of the season when my “lottery* bound” celtics do make the playoffs and when the clippers spurs or okc demolish the lakers 4-0 ill remember the heat just got a new fan

And also it doesn’t matter if your the wizards or the team that just lost in the finals it’s an unseccesful season that you wish could’ve gone better so even if the celtics do get a lotto pick I’ll be more than happy to watch LA get knocked out in the playoffs and be in the same situation as the celtics and that is to IMPROVE and watch my team fight with all their heart to get that next elusive banner
    #18allday

    • kobe

Good luck with Jeff Green and Brandon Bass fight with all their heart. that’s really funny

  • kobe

Cs fans should have voted “Colossal disappointment, season doomed”

  • kobe

You know what? I think Antoine Walker is available Ainge should give him a call.

  • Andrew

Kobe stop being an arrogant stereotypical laker fan everyone knows you over confident people have become money can’t win championships but will and brotherly like bonds do and you laker fans will find that out the hard way

    • kobe

I’ll keep an open mind I will agree with you that Rondo, KG, and Pierce play with hearth most of the time but beyond those three (Bradley not included) your Roster just play for money.

      • Drew

Can you speak English? What are you saying? Are you a retarded child?

  • kobe

Paying Jeff Green that much is not worth it.

  • Quest

The window has closed on this celtic big 3 era It’s time to rebuild with younger players Even if they can make 7 seed they won,t go far into t he playoffs.
Time to bring PP off the bench if he doesn’t retire. What disappointment Jet and Greennhave been!

  • Andrew

Wilcox & green= life threatening cardiac problems an give every ounce of work they can
Sully= hardest worker I’ve seen since kg he isn’t ok with being average
Bass= trains hours to get that elbow jumper perfected
Lee & terry = wear hearts on there sleeve and are non stop hustle and energy and the list goes on and on people talk about how bad we’re playing and deservingly but whenever I see the celtics lose twice this bad I know 90% of the players fought tooth and nail to change those outcomes

  • CelticsKid34

PANIC BUTTON ENGAGED!!! at this rate were looking at a first round exit… maybe a 5 game series, MAYBE… remember when we got our championship and the 2 yrs after we were calling .500 or under teams “Horrible, Garbage, Pretenders”?….. well we are one of those teams. i say show our team the buisness side of the NBA and blow up our roster and salvage the season or tank and get a lottery pick… just saying it is an option. everyone has just been getting better and we are getting WASTED by any team with a half-way decent roster.

    • CelticsKid34

BASS, WILCOX, LEE(OR TERRY,… OR BOTH), AND COLLINS MUST GO. i can live with green. sully is a boss. melo is a project and i see him being a good center in 2 yrs. barbosa has nothing but positives in my mind… instant offense. lower paul and KG’s minutes until playoffs. bring up joseph and let him develope in the nba. GET A BACKUP PG!!!! AND A REAL CENTER!!! if danny doesnt pull the trigger on a trade to bring a center in here… QUOTE ME “WE ARE DOOMED TO A FIRST ROUND SWEEP EXIT IN THE PLAYOFFS”!!!

  • Quest

Yes they are playing hard that’s the scary thing and two consecutive blow outs not just losses!? Tom a back to back and given history it could be 3 huge losses. Something needs to change. Not sure what direction Doc goes now or perhaps it’s about Ainge ‘ s next move.

  • http://driveittothemoon.com/ Lee in Oregon

Where’s the elephant taking a monster dump?

    • Jester00

ha you made me laugh with that thank you

  • Roy

I was there and it was awful. Nothing fell at all. They would get stops but just couldn’t hit anything. Green was just awful. So was bass. Very disappointing

  • Celtic Pride in Oz

Don’t know yet if it’s time for a full panic on this year, but no matter what, we still need to also think of the coming future. Although we certainly need a quality big right now, talk of Sully and AB involved for one should not be… they are two definite keys to our future! Terry hasn’t stepped up yet, Lee had a good game last night but still needs to show more consistency as do Bass and Green. Maybe something involving those three to get us a good big is the go, although many may not take a chance on even Green, as he’s not had enough time to show if he’s able to come back or even to step up, as expected. Disappointed Down Under, but still hopeful of a chance. But to me, the D has to step up more at this stage, not the offense.

  • Kay in Atlanta

Arrgg… I almost smashed myself to the wall while watching the game. I seriously don’t know what can we do at this point. Everybody keep saying about the trade. However for no reasons, I still haven’t really panic. I just have faith that they will pull it off. Even though I am curious when are they gonna to wake up to make those open shots!!

Perhaps I am still a dummy about basketball to say all these. Perhaps I will the one shouting the loudest for trade or whatsoever after someone explain those stats and standing and whatever to me. But seriously guys, do you really think trade some players can solve the problems? They are needed to be trained to buy into the system too! Just like the 9 new rosters and Wilcox and Bradley and Green.

Everybody takes a deep breath before losingyour mind and writing really negative message here. We are frustrated so do the players. (I hope they do) Perhaps we should pray harder there will be lightning somewhere hit the players and finally they can have the chemistry to put up a consistent performance. We just got to believe them. Believe them with whole heart!!! Believe!!! Getting frustrated is not gonna help!!

What can we help as fans?

  • kobe

at least Celtics has a pretty good prospect in Melo, 7 footers are really rare in the NBA nowadays.

    • Drew

It’s HAVE. Not HAS. Are you fucking retarded?

  • http://red'sarmy.com bean town bully™

Why do ya even dialogue with Kobe dude. Really he’s probably Celtic fan looking for some attention because he don’t have real basketball insight. Ignore him he’ll go away.

  • Jaybahs

At least we have the patriots at this point …

    • andy

      +1

  • Drew

I’m not worried. We’ll be fine. All you retards really want to blow it up? Chill the hell out.

    • Alex

You might want to read a dictionary. All I hear from you is ‘retard’ and ‘retarded’. Get an education.

      • Drew

Your mom gave me an education.

        • Jaybahs

          Hahahahaha +1

    • KGino

Agreed. Celts fans willing to blow it up already are retarded.

Drew, we gotta understand that not everyone watches the celtics every second they play like we probably do. From the standpoint of the occasional fans, this looks terrible and we should blow it up. But to experienced fans who have actually watched the celtics closely for the past few seasons, we know not to panic yet.

      • Drew

You know, I honestly didn’t consider that. I guess I just assume that readers of this site watch every game and take notes. These same people probably thought that The Patriots’ season was over when they started 1-2.

        • Celticsfanatic

Oh Christ don’t make me throw up. Plenty of people around here fervently watch the Cs. They just plain suck. Stop wacking off to yourself and eat a Twix or something, damn.

          • Drew

            I love Twix.

  • Jester00

just throwing this out there but Sully is a beast and Jeff Green sucks when he plays any good or OK teams. I called this at the draft and when they resigned Green. Hell i’d almost take Gerald Green over him right now almost.

  • Nathan

This could and probably does sound stupid but this is how I feel. I feel we should keep this roster until we do fail, then blow it up in the offseason. Just see how far these guys can take it, it were gunna rebuild why do we have to do it in the middle of the season if we’re just gunna fail that year regardless. Like it or not these guys play best with their backs up against the wall. Lets just see what can happen, anything is possible.

  • JimmyG

Didn’t see the game fortunately. I hate following this team sometimes just because of games like this, but having said that they are still figuring out their identity and that takes time. My fear is that we won’t figure out our identity like the 2010-2011 team and will get knocked out early in the playoffs. My hope is they turn into last year’s team. The problem is that even our own division is much better this year. I’m not totally sold on either NY team but if they are both ahead of us at the end of the year, we could be looking at a first round series against the Heat. No thanks.

  • Robert

Does anyone see any similarities between Jef Green and Reggie Lewis as a young player? Reggie never blossomed as a player while playing with Larry. Bird was too big of a personality. Paul Pierce does the same thing to Green. Jeff is too passive and defers too much because Pierce is around.

  • KGino

I’m salivating at knocking the heat out as an 8 seed. What sweet justice that would be. (We have to get back to how we were playing defense last year to even have a shot. Insert AB)

    • ZabJudah

This would be my championship i would not care what happened in the later round haha

      • Drew

I’ve said before that beating The Heat in the play offs would be like Reggie Miller beating The Knicks in the 1995 Eastern Semis. That was his championship. I’d bet that he’ll tell you that was the greatest moment in his career. If the C’s can knock The Heat out in the play offs I would be able to die happy. It would be the greatest feeling ever.

        • Celticsfanatic

Like last year’s game 5 in the ECFs. That was like winning a ring to me.

          • Drew

After that eat a Twix comment, I can’t tell if you are being serious or sarcastic. Anyways, I threw a chair against my wall when Pierce hit that shot over LeBron. I must have been screaming for 10 minutes straight at the top of my lungs. That was a moment I’ll never forget.

    • Drew

Even though I firmly believe we will finish as a 3-5 seed, yes, thinking about knocking The Heat out as an 8 seed gives me a MASSIVE erection.
