Recap: Merry Christmas!

KWAPT December 25, 2012 Celtics News, Gametime, Recaps, The Team 29 Comments

The Celtics score an impressive 93-76 win over the Nets in Brooklyn on Christmas Day. Boston was in quite the battle for most of the 1st half, but pulled away in the end behind some great defense and a total team effort. Rajon Rondo led all-scorers with 19 points to go along with 5 assists & 6 boards. More importantly, he only had 1 turnover and 3 steals. Although the key scorers in KG & Truth were quiet, with 8 points each, it was their defense and passing that was key. But the story here was the combo of Sully & Green- (more on them in a minute) they combined for 31 points off the bench.

The Green: Jared Sullinger had easily his best game as a pro. He battled with the bigger and longer Lopez all day, and held his own. His 7 rebounds and 16 points were crucial in today’s win. This kid just seems to get better every game. Jeff Green was also great today. Jeff hit a big 3 to put the C’s up 15 with 4 minutes left and quell any last hopes the Nets had. He put in 15 points and went 4 for 4 from the FT line in an aggressive offensive performance. Despite only scoring 8 points, Paul Pierce dished out a season high 10 assists. KG also had a quiet scoring day, but his vocal leadership & energy on defense was huge. He led the way on D with 2 steals, 2 blocks & grabbed 10 boards. Rondo had a nice balance of scoring & passing to notch 19 pts & 6 assists. Jet looked much better, going  4 of 7 from the field and nailing 3 of 4 from downtown for 11 points.

The Gross: It’s Christmas and we won, so my only “gross” of this game will be the 3rd quarter. The Celtics let the Nets go on a 15-2 run and had C’s fans thinking they were in for yet another letdown.

The Greenlights:

The Grid: (quick stats)

  • 17 point defeat was the Nets’ biggest loss at home all year
  • Celtics beat the Nets down low- the points in the paint: C’s 46 Brooklyn 34
  • Pierce’s 10 assists were the 24th double-digit assist game of his career
  • Celtics out rebounded Nets 41-36
  • Celtics had 25 assists on 38 field goals

This was a big win for the Celtics. They now head out west for a trip that starts with 2 tough games: first the Clippers and then GSW.  Tip-off on Thursday night at Staples is set for 10:30pm EST. Enjoy the rest of your Christmas everyone!

  • terlo

i love the fact that Sully topped everyone with +21. outstanding D and 15-2 run in second quarter. thanks guys.

  • MJ

I would say this was a great win but the Nets have crashed and burned lately.

Needless to say though, the Celtics needed this win.

Sully is making Bass look like the rookie! And I’ve been a big Bass fan but something is up with that big guy, his shot has been awful lately and thats saying a lot because thats like all he does…

    • eddysamson

Oh I forgot to say I know it was garbage time but KJ’s nice spin move to finish off the game was really nice :)

    • Chulinho

I agree with you on Bass, although he had several nice hustle plays today.

I never would have thought Sullinger would be the Celtics most consistent bench player. His contributions have mostly been beneficial.

It’s too soon to anticipate what Kris Joseph could give the team, but his aggressiveness is noted.

What I like most about this group of rookies is their effort. Even in limited or no playing time, their energy seems boundless. It’s refreshing.

    • wil reyes

sully is already a better player than bass in my opinion.

    Just saw recap @ nba.com
    Sully won me completely over!
Look at the kid (2:05) and how he delivers “love” as a follow up to the GW punk move couple of secs earlier
That’s fantastic, that’s so Rondish (but way smarter, hahaha)! That’s so me, allow me to say, that’s how you protect your teammates and how you build a warrior swager!

    • eddysamson

How was his a flagrant 1 and not Bogan’s headlock on Barbosa? I will NEVER understand NBA officiating. NEVER.

      • GreenCro

Call me a fool, but sometimes I would rather have WWE refs, hahaha
this is one of the worst things in the league – officiating

      • kg215

What about KG getting a technical even though he was just trying to get Mrs. Gerald Wallace’s hand off his jersey. KG didn’t push him or anything, Mrs. Wallace just wouldn’t let go and they give KG and Wallace double T’s. Then the flagrant 1 on Sullinger that was less questionable, though not exactly a clear call either. BS.

    • Reggie35RIP

Yeh that was a nice old school move from a young guy like Sully. Just wait until the time’s right for payback and BOOM.

Thats why I said NO on Sully/Bradley for Cousins! Nice win!

  • Danno

Great game. Best part was being able to listen to the entire game on my drive home from Snowboarding in New Hampshire, many miles out of WEEIs range, from the live streaming audio in the new Celtics iPhone app.

  • DK

What app is that and is it a regional thing? NY fan here and my understanding was all the audio stuff was taken over by NBA soy have to pay to listen. Would love to listen to grande and max instead.

    • eddysamson

      i am curious as well

    • KWAPT

It’s the Celtics new mobile app. You can find it here: http://www.nba.com/celtics/app/

    • KWAPT

and as long as it’s not a Thursday night TNT game, you can listen to Grande & Max free every game. Just go to NBA.com and sign-up for a free “Insider” account. Then you can stream NBA LeaguePass Audio free for every non-TNT game.

  • Drew

PAUL PIERCE IS A F’ING BEAST. You guys calling to trade him made me sick. He’ll only heat up more as the season goes. Him and KG are absolutely VITAL to this teams success.
