Amir Johnson lost his goddamn mind last night

The Raptors are, unsurprisingly, pretty terrible.  They have the second-worst record in the league and not a whole lot of hope for the future unless they try to rebuild (again) and try to see if they can get anything worthwhile for Andrea Bargnani.

So the last things fans need is something ridiculous like what Amir Johnson pulled last night.  You can see it in the video, but basically, Johnson wants to touch the ball after a free throw… the ref doesn’t let him… they get into a tug of war like 6 year-olds fighting over a toy… and Johnson gets tossed for it.

THEN… Johnson loses his goddamn mind and throws his mouthpiece at the ref.

“I guess the ref didn’t let me have the ball so we kind of got into a tug of war,” he said. “No words were really said and he rejected me out of the game and I kind of lost my cool from there.”

Raptors coach Dwane Casey said Johnson’s actions were completely out of character.

“I don’t know what happened with Amir. He kind of lost his mind there for a little bit,” the coach said. “I told him we can’t have that on a night where we’re short-handed and we’re in a situation where we’re scrambling. We just gotta have more discipline than that.”

Johnson agreed that it was unusual for him to act out.

“My teammates know me, my parents know me. … I never lose my cool. I never said anything to a ref or got mad,” he said. “The only techs I’ve gotten were for hanging on the rim or slapping the backboard.”

Johnson, who is in his eighth NBA season, is likely looking at a fine from the league for the incident. Following the game, however, he was contrite.

“I think it was just really childish. It was something that didn’t need to happen,” Johnson said. “I lost my cool and I apologize on my part.”

That’s not going to help him avoid the fine or suspension.  I’m not sure what the hell possessed him to do any of this.  I don’t even know why players feel the need to touch the ball after a free throw.

It’s still round.  It’s still leather.  It’s still orange.  You’ll touch it eventually, buddy.  Relax.

pretty sure all the Raps are in freak out mode right now. Just look at how the Kings are crumbling. Teams need a star to pull them together during hard times, a leader. Right now the Raps have 2 leaders in Barg and Jose and Jose went public saying he wants out of there basically. Barg isn’t vocal at all, just pretty much isn’t a leader. Big Cuz for the Kings isn’t the right choice of a leader either. These floundering teams need either a stronger coach or a guy to step up and keep things under control. This is ridiculous.

Also, I’m pretty positive the players are tanking thinking the weak draft up ahead is going to send them a savior. The owners may be dumb enough to think that, but a big trade better happen soon or there might as well not even be a team in Toronto.

    *aren’t tanking, my bad

I’m a bit surprise with the Raptors rough start I thought they would be better from last season. They have some nice pieces and great defensive coach in Casey, so I’m kind of surprise with struggles. Small market teams like the Raptors, Wolves, Pistons and Cavs are prime examples of franchise players like Garnett, James, Carter, Billups or even R.Wallace leaving and having negative after effects.

    • Grandad434

Excellent point! They appeared to have nice pieces added with Lowry seeming he was ready to prove his worth after the Dragic debacle in Houston. Plus overbidding for Fields in hopes of getting Lin totally backfired. Oh well, they seem cursed.

Trade for him. Seriously. He rebounds.

    • LA Flake

I’d rather trade for Jose Calderon to be our backup PG.

    • Brandon Bass has higher rebound rate than Johnson: 15.6% to 15.1%. He’s not rebounding like you think he does

      • Ken

Where are you getting your rebound rate? ESPN has Bass at 12.1 and Johnson at 15.1. Rebounds/40 are 10.5 to 8.0 Johnson.

Come on he shouldn’t get tossed for it he must’ve said something to the ref but if really hasn’t said anything and he has been ejected then it was stupid what ref’s done. Either way Johnson shouldn’t react the way he did.

  • paul

I think the ref could and should have handled the situation differently.

  • sev

“he rejected me out of the game……” hahaha

  • chris

can we officially cancel the NBA Canada project and give the franchise to Seattle now?

    • Grandad434

Smartest comment I’ve read in years. It’s just not working out up there.

  • wade

Boston deserves Johnson, that would be pretty exciting he and Rondo and harass the refs every night
